Rack Me.

I fixed (gooied) my second bike all by my fricking self.

Independence, here I come!

I'll do the third later.

Now all I gotta do is figure out why my knees hurt
so badly when trying to ride it (really really hurt, like
arthritic hurt), and why it's so much harder to go uphill
than it is on my primary bike.

Oh yeah, and scuba classes cost a month's rent (there's
a diving place next to the bike shop). Fuck that. That
would have been cool, too. But not for that much money,
and you have to buy your own equipment? :( At least I
got the bike classes all set up for next month, so if shit turns
to shit while I'm on the road I'll know what to do when it
comes to replacing and patching and airing and being on
my way. Yeah.

But rack me. And I found the valve core remover on the
original bottle of slime I bought the other week.. doh, if
I had known.. I still wouldn't have attempted to fix my
primary.

What kind of fucking retard needs to take a class on riding a bike and changing a tire?

Posted: Mon Apr 03, 2006 3:46 am
by Risa
The kind of retard that can't fit the wheel back over the rims completely over the inner tube using just 'a couple of screwdrivers and some muscle', to paraphrase tough love.

I've been there, man. I've been riding bikes forever. And I have YET to be able to change a fricking tire ((I also have yet to be able to use a hand held bike pump to blow a tire back up. thank god for travel air compressors, sealant and those little one-up canisters of air you can buy at the shop. i haven't used the little canisters yet, but as soon as i get my travel pack completely in order, that goes in. i don't like the price, but... stations no longer have free air, or if you're really unlucky (like one of the places i live near) air at all. but that's besides the point)), i have yet to be able to change it and get it all back on.

so fuck it. let somebody else do it on the primary in the meanwhile, and then i'll learn how to do it next month for all of them. and there's more to the class than that. but that's a big one, for me.

i guess i could always look into one of those solid rubber inner tubes, but i don't trust those :? anybody ever use one of those?

The seat is too low.
what ^^^^ said. It absolutely amazes me how most people think that the proper riding position is with ones knees in your chest.

While pedaling, you should have full leg extension at the bottom on your stroke. This ofcourse does mean that your fat arse might have to come out of the saddle when stopped. Also, do you use pedal straps/clips. Once you do and get used to them, you will never ride a bike without them again. It makes you much quicker and also will tone your abs since you are now pulling your legs up as well as pushing them down.

If you're going from sedentary to physical activity, then you need to actually stretch your knees out. Just launching into pedaling will definitely hurt them.

It's the only way I can ride it without feeling like my head is scraping the sky and I'll fall over.

I'm 5'1", Smackaholic. I guess I should have bought a kiddie bike after all. I cannot fit on adult women's bikes. It's all well and good to have that full leg extension when riding....

but what happens when you have to come to a stop, and your feet don't touch the ground, let alone graze it, like how i'm able to now with the seat as low as possible?

In the past, I've always had to hop off the seat to come to a complete stop with my feet on the ground, or lean the bike way over, with my other foot up in the air on the pedal. Maybe that's how it's supposed to be. For me, just coming back to riding a bike, it doesn't work when riding with Albuquerque traffic. I have a serious vertigo thing. I don't like to feel I'm falling over, and I don't like to feel like I'm up in the air with no way out except to fall over if I need to come to a sudden stop or hit ice (shiver!) or a slick patch on the road or something.

How tall are you, man?

Getting funnier by the minute in here. She sounds like Scritti's midget sister. I'd look into a bus pass.

No, Mgo, I need to feel like I'm in control of what I'm riding. If I'm not in control, I have no business being on Albuquerque roads.

People don't care about bicyclists, pedestrians, scooters, skateboarders, smaller cars around here.

I don't want to end up like that japanese dude who hit a chuckhole in the rain while holding an umbrella. most of y'all laughed at him. i cringed and choked inside. at least when you feel in control you have some control over your fall. if you're just up in the air, fuck that.

I guess it's easy for you to talk shit, too, though. Like I asked, how tall are you?

My third bike is even worse.... it's old, even with the seat completely down, my ass is still all up in the air, but now i have to bend over the handlebars lance armstrong style as well.

and a one and a two and a hop off.

but transportation is transportation.

maybe later I'll feel adventurous enough to raise the seat on the 2nd and 3rd bikes, if the seats are the reasons why my knees ache after getting on and pedaling.

Tall enough so that I can just stand up and you won't have to hurt your knees.

Well, you'd really enjoy this one:

Image

that's with the seat as low as it can go, and i need to work on the tires when i come back in from work and the gym tonight (why not do them now? cuz i'm not a morning person :? why not do it yesterday? cuz i wanted to make sure the other repair on the blue worked.. and it did :) )

Image

now imagine the seat up at its proper height. this is what i'm talking about, ass in the air and having to bend over the handlebars.

it's a great bike, especially if you're just biking around the neighborhood. and with a new seat (which I also haven't put on yet, but the lady said i'd need a narrower one anyway with how the bike is built and you're supposed to ride... but fuck it. i can't deal with narrow. give me a nice plush.. aw hell. i guess i'm screwed with this one, right? :?)

but i don't need a bike around the neighborhood bike (which is what i ended up using this one for, instead of taking it to work, 2 landlords ago). i need a get to work and come back bike.

Image

this is a kinda-sorta closeup of the gear system. the guys at the shop had a really good time playing with this one when i brought it in for a diagnostic on how much it was gonna be to clean it, re-cable it, the whole 9 yards.

i don't pay attention to things like this. apparently, it's very old....

the walmart 21-speed. aka: The Spare and Fun Bike. unfortunately, this is the bike that's also hard on my knees, (because of where the seat is?)

this was the second adjustment i made to it. at the proper height, I feel like i'm holding onto a hot air balloon.

no, there's no where to put a water bottle, and the basket on the front is cute; but needs to be replaced with a real rack in the back, and some saddlebags.

Image

It's great for carrying back chinese takeout, and a couple bags from marshall's, but that's about it.

They had some really great systems at the shop, but the one I was looking at cost $90, without the rack. I can get a rack with cargo netting included at k-mart for 20 bucks or less tho, I guess.

would have been a great bag to have. maybe later. it's a really great system.

and this is my baby.

3 speed. no pain and aches in my joints and knees. no feeling out of control. even hills are a breeze. i'm panting on blue, where i'm merely breathing in and out on pink.

no need to jump off the bike to make a quick stop.

no feeling like i'm gonna fall into the arroyo on the bike path near the library.

when other bikers are present, i feel no anxiety whatsoever about yielding or going.

and i can brake with my feet or with my left hand.

every stride is long, in spite of the seat. like what you were referring to, knees to chest... none of that.

it's the automatic transmission of bikes. every bike should be built like this.

notice the difference in seat setup? it's awesome. that's why i hated it when the tire went flat after popping that piece of glass.

my beauty, my roadie, my baby. my townie.

hell no. some of the sidewalks around here are built for it (you have to see them to believe them. totally embarassing... fucking hills of concrete, fucking slabs broken into 2 then pushed upwards.. or some dumbfuck has pushed the metal covering in the sidewalk out of its socket).

maybe if/when i ever feel comfortable on the blue bike.
