if you get a chance or feeling a bit artsy mos def check out japanese films by teshigahara. some are kind of Kurosawa-esque political intrigue "samurai" flicks (though Kurosawa made some excellent film noir stuff--Drunken Angel, High and Low, and Stray Dog i recommend highly).....every scene is beautiful.

i've seen Rikyu and Basara: Princess Goh which are in the political intrigue/samurai thing genre. to a degree. they are both incredible films.

woman in the dunes is another that defies description but is a great film.


netflixers, take a chance. and check out Kurosawa's High and Low and Drunken Angel. they are fantastic.

Cool, I'll check these. I read the Abe story "Woman in the Dunes"...I'll check this flick out first.

i saw Woman in the Dunes on a big screen a few years ago. it was pretty cool. the last summer the CU international film series had a summer program (just can't generate the revenue anymore)--they did Kurosawa on Thursday's the whole summer on the big screen.

it was awesome. like i say above, those hard-boiled film-noirs--Stray Dog, High and Low, Drunken Angel....just rule. especially the last two. toshiro mifune about 2 stories tall is cool. Red Beard is also really good. there's a scene in High and Low i always show in my Contemporary Mass Media class about journalistic ethics....that and the first 10 minutes of Citizen Kane.

i'd be interested to see how Woman in the Dunes the film compares with the novel...i haven't read it.
