How do you sleep at night knowing that Texas football players generally have more success at Oklahoma than they do Texas?
I sleep just fine knowing that Texas playes generally have better pro careers than their spooner counter parts. Who was the last spooner QB to make it in the NFL? How many elite NFL RBs has the spooners sent sent to the NFL under stoops?
Oklahoma started throwing the ball about a decade ago moron, ofcourse we didn't send quarterbacks to play QB in the pros. Nice stipulation on RBs you threw in there. Oklahoma in the runningback department is pretty damn comparable to texass.
If texass players are so much more successful than Sooners then explain to everyone here just why it is that Oklahoma has six more players than texass active on NFL rosters. Explain that why as of 2006 Texass has had 278 players selected in the NFL draft and as of 2003 Oklahoma had 292 (couldn't find more recent numbers for OU as I had to use the Oklahoma media guides I could find and the most recent was 2003). If texass is so much better than Oklahoma at producing NFL players please explain why texass has had 29 players represent their NFL squads 69 times in the pro bowl as oppossed to Oklahoma's 37 players and 80?
I'll hang up and listen to your answer off the air.
All these stats are verifiable through either the official Texas athletis website (under history) and Oklahoma media guides (mine was from before the 2003 season).

funny considering that only Cedric Benson from Texas is note worthy in the NFL at RB, the best RB out of Texas in the league went to Texas Christian and not UT

Earl Campbell was not ALL THAT. How many good years did he have in the NFL? While Earl is one of my favorite players of all time (Oiler fan here), I don't put him up there as a "great back" of all time.
He played 9 years in the NFL, getting 1000 yards only 5 times.

Priest is from San Antonio, he went to Marshall High school, when he was recruited he went by the name of Anthony, but decided to go by his middle name of Priest because when he arrived at Texas there was already another Anthony Holmes on the team.
I watched Priest play in High school back in 92, he was good but never came across as being special. But Marshall's HC wasn't the best at utlizing talent.

For the first 4 years of his career Earl dominated like no back, he was the only real talent on the Oilers offense. The big thing about Earl's career is the way he was over used by Bum Philips. Bum was the classical run on first, run on second, throw on third coach. By Earl's 5th year in the league his body was shot.
Last time I was down in Austin I went to a open practice and saw Earl, I will tell you it brought tears to my eyes to see him today. He can't walk without help and he looks 20 years older than he is. My son was with me and he has heard all the Earl Campbell stories from when I was a kid watching him, and he couldn't believe it was the same guy.
I told my son later that maybe he should stick with golf, they don't end their lives crippled.

Speaking of Earl...
Earl has 4 or 5 of my chimes. I was doing the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and some guy came up to my booth and said he wanted to get a couple of chimes and that they were for Earl Campbell. I just kinda shook my head and said, OK.
The next day, the guy came back and said, Earl wanted to get a few more for his ranch or home in the country. Smiling, I said really? He said yeah, and asked if I wanted to meet him? I'm thinking, hell yeah. So he takes me over to one of the food booths at the show, and there was Earl selling his sausages behind the counter.
I didn't even know he sold his own brand of sausages.
Anyways, we started talking and we ended up making a trade for the windchimes. I gave him 2 or 3 more and he let me eat all the food from his booth for the remainder of the show(2 weeks).
He was a lot smaller than I thought he would be, and he had a country boy accent and was hard to understand.
Good guy, and a great back.

You are both correct. Priest moved to San Antonio in High School he still considers Fort Smith his home. He also spent a good bit of time growing up in Spiro, Oklahoma.

Good thing that Priest was already used to that before he got to college, then.
By the way, if we're going to talk only about running backs that were recruited by current coaches, OU's only had two starting tailbacks that Stoops recruited use up eligibility yet. One was a starter for the Broncos until he got injured. The other one just finished this year. I'm relatively sure that Adrian Peterson is going to get drafted pretty high, though. And it's not like Cedric Benson is tearing up the league. Who else has
Mack recruited that's so awesome as an NFL running back?
We had a pretty good running back after Ricky. His name was Hodges Mitchell. He was the starter for 1999-2000. He ran for over 1100+ both years. He also took a cheap shot to the knee in his last game against Oregon in the 2000 Holiday Bowl. It took him 2 years to rehab the injury and he was never the same. He would have been a 2-4 round pick according to all the experts. Benson came in 2001-2004. Jamaal Charles looks to be pretty good.

Just to interject.....just watched ESPN's draft special and they made a great point about VY's SIDEARM throws against the TALLER d-lines in teh NFL. Many MORE balls will be batted down at the line of scrimmage than in college. Also, made a point of the single option offense, shotgun, and poor foot work.
But hey....he should do real well.

How many QB's for that matter. The best one of the lot is the one he benched in favor of the kid that wasn't better. And spare me the "Vince is gonna dominate the league" crap. He's gonna suck. He's gonna be a few snaps better than I am.

i'll just interject as a Sooner: Earl was a MAN. he's equal to Billy Sims in terms of RB's i saw in person....who were clearly the best player on the field--though Billy in the open field was utnthinkable dangerous. Rashaan Salaam was untackleable in 94 or 95? he was bad ASS in college running out of that deep I. I'd put him third. it's really sad the beating Earl took. and Vito is right, the guy can hardly walk.
i don't claim to know everything, but I saw Billy Sims in person for two seasons and he was the best i've ever seen at making people miss and get to full speed. he was incredible.
Billy Sims should have won the Heisman twice. apologies to our posters of Troy, but Charles White was never better than Billy on any day of the week.

I personally thought the best spooner RB I've ever seen was Marcus Dupree.
Here is a list of Mack's tailbacks since he's been at Texas
98 - Ricky Williams
99 - Hodges Mitchell
00 - Hodges Mitchell
01 - Ced Benson
02 - Ced Benson
03 - Ced Benson
04 - Ced Benson
05 - Jamal Charles
Every year Mack has had a 1000+ yard rusher.
And BTH - Jamal was nursing a bum anckle for the entire 2nd half of the season. Early on he was on pace to break 1500.
BTW according to Colin Cowherd, Vince is now the top rated QB in this draft. He had an interview with Mel Kiper and he also said as much.

DD Lewis was his first recruit at RB. He was switched to LB. He was a key contributor to the Seahawks defense.
Ivan Williams. He played well but got hurt his senior year and didn't make the pros.
Kenny Hayter. He played well his Freshman year. He ended up transferring to another school.
Sneezy Beltran. A top high school player who never panned out. He ended up transferring to Abilene Christian.
Cedric Benson.
Albert Hardy. He was a RB in HS and will be a started this year at FB
Selvin Young. Played better toward the end of the year and is now recovered from his broken leg last year. He will be on a pro roster.
Erik Harderman. He was switched to LB
Jamaal Charles. Will be the started this year.

Doesn't look like Mack has fared any better than Bob then does it? Honestly Harv? Adrian is likely to go pro at the end of this year. That might change the debate considerably. Just sayin'.
Harv off topic but do you know whatever happened to JoMo Rose? Went to HS at Georgetown. I think he shocked everyone when he signed at Baylor but I never heard anything about him after that. It was the late 90s when he went to Gtown.

There were a couple of guys that shocked the world and went to Baylor. the first was Ben Gay from Spring. He didn't do shit. He didn't have the grades and ended up in Browns camp for a cup of joe.
Then there was Jerrod Douglas. He was a stud out of Converse Judson. He planned on going to Texas but then backed out and went to Baylor. Never became more than a average back.
Don't know about the guy from Georgetown....I will check around

Evidently your not a very good reader because Mack has
recruited two runningbacks that are in the NFL. DD Lewis was recruited as a runningback. Since you guys are so nit picky about who Mack recruited then you have to include Lewis on this list.
I hardly think it is a slight against Mack that he didn't recruit the runningbacks he had starting for the first 3 years he was coach. As near as i can tell that only leaves 5 seasons for other runningbacks he did recruit to make an impact, and lets see what we got out of those other 5 years. A runningback that is one of the top 5 all time rushers and a runningback that is probably better.
Oh and Harv, Hardy and Hardamen are both gone from the team. Hardy suffered a back injury that ended his career and Hardamen flunked out.
You also forgot Romonce Taylor who will be in the NFL as well.

"To IndyFrisco - Earl Campbell" it reads. One of my favorite sports memoribilia pieces. Only thing I have that I hold more dear is official U of H jerseys of both Drexler and Olajawon signed by each Clyde "The Glide" Drexler and Akeem "The Dream" Olajawon. Since Hakeem used Akeem in college, that's how he signed it.

Wow I didn't realize we had so much in common, growing up I was a huge Phi Slamma Jamma fan. It broke my heart when they lost to NCSU and then to Georgetown.
I must say for the first 30 years of my life I thought I was cursed as a sports fan. Here is a small list of my sports heart breaks.
1. 78 and 79 Houston Oilers losing to the Steelers.
2. U of H losing to NCSU and Georgetown
3. 83 Cotton Bowl UT losing to Georgia
From 84 to 90 all my teams sucked
4. 89-90 Spurs blowing a 7 pt lead against Portland
5. 91 Cotton bowl watching Miami destroy Texas
6. 92 Oilers
7. 93 Oilers
8. 94 Oilers
9. 95 Spurs destroyed by the Rockets
10. 97 spurs and 97 Longhorns both sucked
Finally in 99 something good happened to me as a sports fan, Ricky Williams won the Heisman and the Spurs won the championship.
Since then outside of a nasty little losing streak to the spooners its been pretty damn nice being a Sports fan.
