It truly sucks how badly ESPN run the draft.

I guess I don't see how it's ESPN's fault. We're talking about a 10 hour TV event where something interesting happens just once every 10-15 minutes. What are they supposed to do? Just sit there in silence until the next pick?

I don't really think the draft is meant to be watched nonstop, start to finish (although I have no doubt that there are people who do it). After the first 15 picks or so, I turned down the TV, threw on some CDs, and started picking up around the house. I checked back in every now & then to see what was going on.

You guys don't really expect it to be 10 hours of non-stop excitement and insightful commentary, do you?

NFL Network's coverage is pretty good...it's less about the presentation and more about the content. Corey Chavous knows his stuff...I can imagine he'll be a member of some team's front office someday. Also, Rich Eisen is much less annoying than Chris Berman.

I feel ya. Does ESPN really need 12 people discussing the draft? Chris Berman's act is so tired. They only need 3 people: Berman, Chris Mortensen and Mel Kiper. Irvin and Jackson brought nothing to the table. Just another example of ESPN thinking it is bigger than the event itself.

Saw in the TV Guide that it started at like 9:30am. I turned the TV on at around 2:00pm and they were half way through the 1st round of picks...I was wondering what the hell they did for the previous 4 hrs......Shook my head and muttered that anyone that can sit through that is an uncurable NFL junkie

If the draft is unwatchable for you, you just aren't as diehard as the rest of us.

That's the thing. I doubt all these teams are taking 10-15 minutes to make a pick. ESPN needs to show their highlights of the player, then have that player broken down by 10 "experts". In my mind we don't need to see all of that.

The actual draft coverage is almost anticlimactic,
after a month of "Preview Special" shows. :P

49ers got a whole lot of young talent that will learn what it is like to lose, lose, lose.

I watched the first 30 picks or so of the 1st round (does anyone really need to watch more than that?).

Later that evening, I checked back in just to see who the Lions took and to see where some of the bigger names ended up in later rounds.

The only problem I had with ESPN's coverage was that in the later rounds when a guy got drafted, the crew would ignore said selection and continue to talk about Reggie Bush, Vince Young, Leinart, etc., and of course, just hammered away at the same old points about why they will or will not make it in the NFL. It wasn't until about 15 minutes later that Mel Kiper would mention the mysterious selection's 40 yard time, or something. I wanted to actually learn something about these guys I've never heard of.

I really didn't need to see Ron Jaworski break down the flaws of Vince Young's mechanics 47 times. Yes, we get it: a quarterback is not supposed to throw like Dennis Eckersley.

That pretty much sums up why the draft, as produced by ESPN, is utterly unviewable to even a die hard football fan after the first round. I spent Saturday hanging out with an old college bud pounding beer and watching the draft/Yankees-Jays game. After about the middle of round 2, you could see that they were showing the same fucking clips over and over again of Hoge and Jaworski breaking down the guys ESPN had identified as the "star" players. WTF ever happened to "Go Deep"?

After the first 3 rounds, they should just air normal coverage, maybe a baseball game or something, and keep the draft ticker on the screen - Best of both worlds.

It was covered just fine. They showed highlights of the players even in the later rounds. If you don't like it/aren't interested, the choice is simple. I personally only stayed glued to the TV up through the Denver pick of Cutler, but I repeatedly checked back to see the updates from time to time.

The former QBs (Jaworski and Steve Young) were pimping Cutler hard. It'll be interesting to see how he turns out.

Not really. A lot of people (asians and hispanics too) thought VY would be the best QB in the draft after the way he dismantled USC.

If he proves he has the ability to learn how to read NFL defenses, I'd have to agree.

I watched parts of the later rounds. Perhaps your team picked a bunch of scrubs not worth covering, hence the lack of highlights.

I got a pretty good intro to the players to follow during the upcoming training camps. I mean, prior to saturday I'd never heard of anyone named D'Brickashaw or Mario williams or Hawk etc. So now when I read the training camp roundup reports there's at least a frame of reference. And all I had to do was devote some hours during one weekend in April in front of the tube. The coverage was good enough for that purpose.
