Tory MP eats crow after ruffling judical feathers

Post by Canadian »

A Saskatchewan MP took a swipe at the Supreme Court this weekend.

But Maurice Vellacott ruffled the judicial feathers and had to eat crow not long after.

Vellacott stepped on judicial toes in an interview Saturday with Christina Lawand of CBC News in Ottawa.
"I don't think it is the role of the judge, whether left or right or conservative or whatever stripe [he] happens to be, to actually figure to play the position of God," the Tory MP for Saskatoon-Wanuskewin told Lawand.

Vellacott, a former pastor who claims a doctoral degree from Trinity International University in Chicago, then singled out Beverley McLaughlin, the chief justice of Canada.

He claimed McLaughlin "herself said actually when they step into this role that suddenly there's some kind of mystical power that comes over them, which everything that they've ever decreed is not to be questioned.

"They actually have the discernment and almost prophetic ability to plumb and know the mind of the public."

Supreme court judges usually ignore the barbs that periodically come their way. But Vellacott's comments were apparently too much for McLaughlin. A spokesman for the chief justice "categorically denied" that she had ever said what Vellacott claimed.

"She has always said it is a judge's role to interpret and apply the law … but those choices are always made in accordance with legal precedents and with the laws laid down by parliament and the legislatures," the judicial spokesman said.

After that rebuff, it didn't take Vellacott long to issue a statement of his own.

"As I'm not a member of the cabinet, I obviously do not speak for the government of Canada on these matters," he said in a statement Sunday.
Ahh the fanatical fringe of Harpers party speaks out.

That really was a stupid dumbass thing to say.

Funny Harpocrit has not said anything yet. Does he hold the high court in such contempt as well?

The opposition introduced a motion to remove Vellacott as chairman of the all-party, opposition-controlled Commons aboriginal affairs committee. It is to be voted on Wednesday.

Harper's choice of Vellacott for that job stirred earlier protest because the MP had vocally defended two Saskatoon policemen convicted of dumping a native man on the outskirts of town in freezing weather, forcing him to walk home
I thought I recognised that name..
One of Dicator Harper's radical right wing religious zealots..
He obtained a Bachelor's degree from Briercrest College, a Christian educational institution located in Caronport, Saskatchewan. He then earned a Master of Divinity at the Canadian Thelogical Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry from Trinity International University which is an evangelical Christian university in Deerfield, Illinois, in the greater Chicago area. Before entering political life, he was a pastor and health care worker.[2] He joined the Reform Party of Canada in 1990.[3]

Vellacott wrote an editorial piece in early 1998 describing Watkinson as a "social engineer" promoting an "extremist agenda", and accusing Canada's "unelected judges" of "judicial imperialism" in their interpretations of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.[11] A supporter of Watkinson responded that Vellacott's piece was a "mixture of invective and innuendo", and argued that his defence of corporal punishment was based on flawed logic.[12]

Vellacott supported other socially conservative initiatives. In late 1998, he brought forward a "conscience rights" bill to prevent nurses and doctors from being forced to perform abortions.[13] He wrote an editorial against same-sex marriage the following year, arguing that marriage should be restricted to heterosexual couples because of its traditional role in the procreation and nurturing of children. He wrote that "homosexuals already have the right to marry, providing that -- like everybody else -- they marry someone of the opposite sex".[14] He opposed granting spousal benefits for same-sex couples, describing supporters of the initiative as "activist liberal judges and a small but aggressive homosexual lobby".[15]

In 1999, he criticized the Saskatchewan government's decision to force thirteen year-old Tyrell Dueck into cancer treatment. Dueck's parents objected to hospital care for religious reasons; Vellacott argued for parental discretion in such matters.[16] (Dueck subsequently died, and some believe his cancer could have been properly treated if medical care had been provided earlier.[17])

What a piece of work..

So it seems to me that you and Otis One share more then just the same 'jump to conclusions' thang.

Screeching loser is what screeching loser does.

Has-beens, and Prolly-will-be's shrill the same annoying yammerings, which is their identifying loser factor, and it doesn't take a venture into the iffy world of the thinned skinned to recognize that.

If loser_tard cared about Canada, they would just stfu with the self-serving nit picking meaningless poli_crap, and join with the ever growing majority of real Canadians who share in the admiration and partake in the appreciation of finally having an honest leader working for all of us in Ottawa...Lord knows it's been a long time since we had a good guy looking after our interests.

Anywho; seeing that you selfish losers will never stop hating on the New Order of Canada, the least you could do is try and mix it up some so you don't all come across reading so pathetically alike.

All I am saying, is give not being so f-n boring a chance. :)

WRONG!!!
I can clearly see that there is nothing sad about what beats the hell outta your dick up the ass heathen anti_christ lib_crap.

Nice Try Pig_Martin.

Same goes for Spiffy_Iffy_Tard

Embattled Tory MP quits post
Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government suffered its first setback Wednesday when his hand-picked choice was driven out of the chairmanship of a Commons committee.

It's the first major wrench to hit the works of an otherwise smooth-running, tightly controlled Tory government. Maurice Vellacott stepped down from the aboriginal affairs committee after suggesting Supreme Court judges play God with the law. Harper quickly indicated he would not shy away from controversial appointments to head committees.

Rookie Tory MP Colin Mayes, who recently advocated jailing reporters who write stories the government doesn't like, was named as the Conservatives' pick to succeed Vellacott as the committee chairman.

Mayes recently suggested reporters be "hauled off in handcuffs" if they "fabricate stories, or twist information and even falsely accuse citizens."

Conservative whip Jay Hill downplayed Mayes' comments as a "rookie mistake."

"Look, Mr. Mayes obviously has apologized for that," Hill said.

Vellacott, who will continue to represent Saskatoon-Wanuskewin as an MP, denied that he was pressured by his own party to resign.
I bet. I am sure he was told too, but in a round about way. These conservatives are real shysters and do not have a problem with getting the knives out. They are a dangerous scary bunch those dinosaurs.
