Least annoying Rush album

Well, I've been thinking about breaking down and trying to get into some Rush. I already dig a lot of bands they've influenced (Fate's Warning, TMV, Co & Ca, and even Tool, to a degree).

Anybody have any recommendations? It seems like Moving Pictures is the consensus favorite, but I already know I hate at least two songs on there. It seems to be their equivalent to Led Zep IV - the one with all the overplayed radio hits. I guess I'm looking for their Physical Graffiti or Houses of the Holy.

Maybe check out Presto? A little more mainstream Rush.

Permanent Waves would be a good choice. I also enjoy Vapor Trails a good deal.

Presto is all right. I do agree about the mainstream aspect of it. It's one of their CD's which I do not listen to as much. That was the beginning of the 4 album cycle after a live CD (which they don't follow these days) and it some experimental aspects within it. Tough to follow up from Hold Your Fire.

Really I'd have to say either Moving Pictures or Farewell to Kings. Lee's voice gets more grating with age and the lyrics get more cheeseball. Grace Under Pressure is a good one too if the synths don't chase you off.

Anything before Power Windows would be a good start.

Ummm... I'm just kidding. Why not get the greatest hits package? I think it's called Rush Chronicles.

Good choice. Different Stages is also a great live recording.

Are you more interested in straight ahead rock, or pop rock?

I'd say go with Different Stages - it's a good collection of live songs from a show in Chicago, if I remember correctly.

If you're not into live stuff, and you're looking for straight ahead rock, I'd go with Permanent Waves or Vapor Trails. I think their best stuff is early to mid 80s, which would be Signals, Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows.

I am not necessarily looking for their most "accessible" or mainstream album, and certainly not a greatest hits package. It's their "greatest hits" (at least the stuff on classic rock radio) that have already shaped my negative opinion of them.

I can handle something more experimental or progressive. In fact, I'd probably prefer it. I'm just trying to determine if there's something there beyond "Tom Sawyer" and "Limelight" that I'm just not getting.

Like I said, a lot of bands I like claim Rush as an influence, but Rush themselves have always struck me as just cheesy. Give me the complicated stuff. I want the stuff that might take a few listens to really sink in.

My natural instinct would be to go to their early stuff, but that doesn't seem to be what I'm seeing here.

With that being said you can't go wrong with 2112, A Farewell To Kings, Hemispheres, or Permanent Waves.

Rush is one of those bands that I have to marvel at the fan's dedication. I seriously have heard this conversation several times between Rush fans over the years:

Guy 1: "Hey, the new Rush album is coming out this week! Are you going to get it?"

Guy 2: "I don't know, the last one wasn't that good."

Guy 1: "Yeah, I know, but I heard this one is supposed to be great."

Seriously, several times over the years the same conversation about hoping the next Rush album is going to be better.

Their last studio album, Vapor Trails, was pretty damn good. Their last studio album I haven't really listen to much at all, is Presto, which is about 5 studio albums ago. Each successive studio release since then has been progressively better.

And in a mere 20 years they'll be back to making albums as good as the shit they put out in the 70s. ;)

Going to be hard to top that era, especially since they have not had a song near the 10 minute range since The Camera Eye.

I would put Vapor Trails ahead of some of their 70's material, such as Rush and Caress Of Steel.

my solo stuff DOES kick ass.

seriously, outside Discipline i prefer the pre-Adrian Belew stuff. or, as in the Mahavishnu vein.....Weather Report.

I have a few King Crimson CDs but I don't find myself reaching for them that often. I have to be in a certain mood, I guess. They're talented musicians, but it can get challenging at times. As much as I like "complicated" stuff, it has to ultimately have some degree of "catchiness" to it. Tool and Mars Volta seem to have that balance down pretty well. Coheed & Cambria tend to stray a little too far towards the "catchy" side sometimes, but I still dig them.

So what's the lowdown on this Mahavishnu Orchestra? Is it an actual orchestra, with strings and whatnot?

From netflix:
Drawing on rare archival footage and an in-depth interview with Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson, a team of leading critics and musicians revisits each of the legendary band's albums produced between 1974 and 1981, offering a fascinating track-by-track analysis. Among the featured songs are "Closer to the Heart," "In the Mood," "Finding My Way," "2112," "A Farewell to Kings," "Limelight," "Tom Sawyer" and more.
Apparently it was released in 74, and recently released on DVD. Can't believe after all my old dabblings into Rush info, this never popped up. It's in the queue.

I have always liked Fly By Night, Signals, Moving Pictures, Presto, and Counterparts...not a big fan of Vapor Trails...

Mike - there is a lot of cool shit out there not named Tom Sawyer and Red Barchetta and what not...

a few of my favorite songs

Red Sector A
Witch Hunt
The Trees
By Tor and the Snow Dog
Lakeside Park
New World Man
2112
A Passage to Bangkok
Animate
YYZ (Live due to the drum solo)
and one of my all time favorites is Natural Science...

now this is just a slice of my favorites but hey there are so many...plus being a drummer since the age of 8 or 9 listening to Neil evolve over the years has been incredible...if you want to be some fucking drumming get the Video of a Show of Hands (first time he used samples in his solo) and of course R30...

RACK Natural Science. That is my favorite Rush song. I was listening to Different Stages yesterday and that song just flat out rocked. It was nice that they finally put that into a live setlist.

I'm looking forward to the release of Replay X3 to see A Show Of Hands and Grace Under Pressure.

I agree the sound is amazing, but I just don't care for the 70s Rush era stuff as much. That's why Different Stages is great...still has a raw sound, but the material is much better.

Caught the first disc last night. The reviews from Netflix are terrible, but I thought it was pretty interesting. The bits and pieces of concert footage are real grainy, look and sound real dated, so if concert footage is what you're looking for, this isn't for you. Basically, a small group of people give a track-by-track analysis of each album up to Moving Pictures, I believe. Not often do you get to hear much discussion on the Necromancer, or Fountains of Lamneth, so I thought that was cool.

Well, I ended up getting 2112. It's pretty decent. It could grow on me. It's definitely not the fingernails-on-a-chalkboard reaction I get from "Tom Sawyer." Their pictures in the liner notes are fucking hilarious though. Peart has a fantastic 70s porn 'stache, and they're all dressed like Jedi.

It's at least good enough to warrant a gamble on Hemispheres.
