I was just reading that Billy Joel was the feature speaker at
the commencement for Syracuse University. Nice gig for the
"piano man".
When I got my BS in Agriculture at the U of Maine in 1962
the speaker was then Supreme Court Justice Tom Clark.
Don't ask me what he talked about, but I imagine the usual
stuff about--doing your best, etc.
Anyone else care to chime in. I think there are at least
a couple more T1B'ers with college degrees.

Richard A. Grasso, former CEO of the NY stock exchange. He was the most boring fuck you'll ever want to hear talk.

Some President of some country. Didn't go, could not have cared less.

some Missourah Congressman and law school alum at the one I was at yesterday. He had little to offer kids leaving law school 50 years after he graduated. He was probably just there speaking in hopes someone would take pity upon him and help him sign up for medicare.

I don't think we get speakers at Associate degree ceremonies. I wouldn't know how that went anyways since I didn't attend it. Just my degree in the mail and called it good.
At my sister's graduation last spring at Michigan, one of the co-founders of Google...I believe the guy's name is Larry Page...was the speaker at the graduation for the school of engineering at Crisler Arena. He's a Michigan alum. I don't know who spoke at the main ceremony at the Big House.

The Head of the Philosophy Department spoke at ours. Good speech, but I at least would have thought they would have opened up the wallet to bring someone in. The following semester Dick Cheney spoke. Too bad I missed that.

President Bush spoke at my Daughter's graduation ceremony from Calvin College last May.
Loved the opportunity to sit in on that.
My own graduation ceremony speaker .... ?
Think it was Mr Goodwrench.
I was toast, dunno ...

Believe it or not, the Bishop of Youngstown, Ohio. I forgot his name, no reason to remember it.
If someone that obscure speaks at Notre Dame's commencement, he'd damn well better have an excellent commencement speech. Unfortunately, however, he did not. I think I fell asleep during the speech.

I'm sure she's boring as hell unless she's pretending to be that character from Nell that speaks funny and runs around nude.

Not a clue in the world who spoke at mine. Much unlike ND's ceremonies, the speaker at PSU could have been a no-name and slinked by.

Some alum who made it far enough to get invited, but not far enough to where I would remember his name. I'd have to see if my commencement program is still with my degree. That could take a while. ;)

That was just my opinion.
Just curious: don't you think enough of PSU to hope that your commencement speaker either: (a) was someone very prominent; or (b) delivered an excellent speech?

I think high enough of
anyone's 4 year degree, regardless of school, that they should be rewarded with someone very prominent to speak at their commencement.
Just my opinion though.

They hadn't invented the P.A. system yet, so all we got was some guy who came in and waved.

I don't remember.
But the drunken, shirtless slob in front of me in the Camp Randall bleachers popped a bottle of champagne, and it soaked the poor guy in front of him.
One of those "feel bad, but can't help but laugh" moments.
I was hoping for a brawl, but it was not meant to be.
The engineers all chanted "We have jobs, we have jobs."
The business grads yelled "You work for us, you work for us."
Those of us in liberal arts were left with, "We can read, we can read," which was little consolation and kinda sad.

I didn't say a word at my graduation. I was worried that if I opened my mouth all the drunken vomit would come out.

And you wonder why you cant get anyone elected? Not everyone hates the President and Ali G although funny, should be banned from making any commencement speeches for the rest of his life. What a slap in the face to intelligent kids who have busted their ass at arguably the most difficult University in the country, to have some asshat come in and shit all on them. Ohh but thats okay.

We were all to busy passing around pint bottles of Jack to even notice if anyone was speaking.
