Paul McCartney and Wife Heather Split
"The Insider" has learned that after almost four years of marriage, PAUL McCartney and wife HEATHER MILLS have separated.
But Paul insists that, contrary to the rumors that have circulated over the last few days, Heather did not marry him because of his fortune.
In a message posted on his website, Paul states: "I'm really disappointed that during a very difficult and emotional time for both Heather and myself there are certain people in the media who are writing things about Heather that are just plain untrue. It's been suggested that she married me for the money and there is not an ounce of truth in this.
She is a very generous person who spends most of her time trying to help others in greater need than herself ... I'm very sad to see that some insensitive people would choose a moment like this to spread these vicious rumours."
Paul goes on to say, "I urge people not to read this stuff and support Heather and myself at this difficult time."
Despite Heather's admission last week that she and Paul were very much together, the former couple released the following statement Wednesday, "Having tried exceptionally hard to make our relationship work given the daily pressures surrounding us, it is with sadness that we have decided to go our separate ways. Our parting is amicable and both of us still care about each other very much but have found it increasingly difficult to maintain a normal relationship with constant intrusion into our private lives, and we have actively tried to protect the privacy of our child.
Separation for any couple is difficult enough, but to have to go through this so publicly, especially with a small daughter is immensely stressful. We hope, for the sake of our baby daughter that we will be given some space and time to get through this difficult period."
According to reports, Heather and Paul have been living apart for the past few weeks and Paul even vacationed alone in France last week. So where are they today?
"For three weeks Heather has been staying at the couple's beachfront home recovering from a leg operation, while Paul remains on the family farm 55 miles away," says KEVIN O'SULLIVAN of the Daily Mirror.
Paul, 63, and Heather, 38, were married in a lavish ceremony in Northern Ireland in June, 2002 and Heather gave birth to their daughter BEATRICE in October, 2003.
The pair reportedly never signed a prenup and now many speculate how much of his estimated $1.5 billion fortune is up for grabs.
So why was there no prenuptial agreement? In 2002, Heather told Vanity Fair, "I wanted to prove that I loved him for him," but Paul wouldn't let her sign a prenup. She also revealed, "I'll never be dependant on Paul financially ... I believe every woman should have a reserve because you never know what will happen in life."
So what is at stake? First up, Paul's earnings. He's said to be pulling in nearly $32 million at the moment and there are family homes scattered throughout Britain and the U.S., including a townhouse in London, a penthouse in Piccadilly and a reported $1.9 million beach house in Sussex.
