We'll see if Jsc posts in this thread. That being said, I've met some upstanding, quality members of government here in Louisiana, but I could probably count them on one hand.

there is so much money and chances
for graft (honest and dishonest---
ever read George Washington Plunkett ?)
that even someone with good intentions can
get caught up in it all--- regardless of party
affiliation.
The most important reason that if we really wanted
to clean up politics (if it is even possible) would
be to have term limits !!
If it works at the state level--why not in our
nation's capital ??

They have term limits here in Monroe County and things are just as fucked up as ever. The only difference is that now each legislator spends the last 4 years of his or her 12 year legislative career angling for another public sector job so that they can qualify for a pension. Term limits are a fucking joke.

You would want to party like it's 1799. But try to remember that the 18th century equivalent to an FSU degree was a career as a blacksmith.

Term Limits here in Cali do keep all the Special Intrerest people busy. They have to stay in touch with who gets bought and for how long and at the same time groom and shape another set of lapdogs for future uses.

A history major should know better than to post this. Slavery already had been abolished, IIRC, in most of the northern states by the time the Constitution was ratified.

Not to mention that there was serious discussion about abolishing slavery at the time, but that was sacrificed in the interest of obtaining unanimous ratification of the Constitution. Further, the founding fathers included a specific amendment process, and I'd be willing to bet that a few of them were prescient enough to realize that there was at least a possibility that slavery would one day be abolished through that process.
