Having the 2013 PGA and the 2008 Senior PGA in your backyard doesn't exactly suck.
PGA confirms majors at Oak Hill in 2008, 2013
Staff report
(May 23, 2006) — Oak Hill Country Club will host the 2008 Senior PGA Championship and the 2013 PGA Championship, PGA of America announced today.
In 2008, Oak Hill's legendary East Course will join PGA National Golf Club of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Laurel Valley Golf Club of Ligonier, Pa., and Valhalla Golf Club of Louisville, Ky., as the only U.S. courses to host a Senior PGA Championship, PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup.
"For the past 60 years, Oak Hill Country Club and its membership have proudly maintained the tradition of being a home to major championships," said PGA of America President Roger Warren. "Many of the most memorable moments and golf's finest champions have been showcased at Oak Hill.
"We are excited about Oak Hill being host to the greatest names in senior golf in May 2008, as the Senior PGA Championship makes its first appearance in the state of New York.
"And we anticipate that we also will find tremendous support from the community and membership when the 95th PGA Championship returns to Oak Hill in August of 2013."

I'm already looking forward to walking the grounds in 2 years and seeing some of the old legends hack it up.

What kinda sucks, is that (according to super-secret Dinsdale sources, anyhow) the PGA just about had the pen to the paper signing the deal to host not 1 but 2 US Opens at Pumpkin Ridge (not too far from me, at all...and where Tiger won 2 of his Am Championships, if'n I remember right), when Jeld-Wen went and rescued the Tradition, and brought it to the area for years to come.
Apparently, the PGA guys said something to the effect of "We have the Women's Open here about every other year, we now have a Champions Major here every year, so we're now not in a hurry to have yet another Major in Portland."
WTF?
I'm pretty freaking sure I'd trade the women and geriatrics for the freaking US Open in a heartbeat.
Can't find a link to it, but I remember hearing some PGA rep on the radio or some crap saying Portland is the #1 market for golf, on a per-capita basis, and consistantly has the highest market share of TV viewing. Don't know if that's true or not, but I wouldn't be suprised. Then again, the TV ratings could be a function of being up north and way out west in the Pacific Time Zone, meaning that a person can watch PGA until the show is over on saturday and sunday afternoons, and still go out and get 18 in afterwards...there is that.
But I'd be willing to bet that if the Open ever came here (once an almost-certainty, now looking unlikely), those tix would go so fast, it would make your head spin.
So, I guess my point is (not that I ever really have one) -- I'm kinda torqued that the Open isn't going to be played here soon. One of my golfing buddies is a member at Pumpkin(probably not for much longer), and he said that it was all but a done deal. Then, things changed....DAMMIT!
I'm jealous, B.

Sounds like the MO for the USGA. The USGA likes to operate with minimal area competition. That is why I don't expect to see another US Open in Rochester in my lifetime. Oak Hill is now branded as a "PGA Course" for all eternity. They would have to likely bend over backwards to even come close to getting the attention of the USGA now.
But, I don't really care as long as they can pull the PGA events. PGA tickets are slightly easier to get than US Open tickets anyway. You can still buy weekly passes for the PGA this year at Medinah, whereas the US Open sells out no matter where they play it and they sell out within a day. Of course one of the reasons why the PGA likes hosting their championship in Rochester is the absolutely voracious appetite of this area for tournament golf. Back in 2003 Rochester had 20,000+ a day on the weekend for the LPGA event and 2 months later had 30,000 or so a day for the PGA Championship. Nowadays we also have a Nationwide event in August as well.
BTW: It is looking like the Open and the PGA are soon to be booked out past 2014. The only remaining unbooked year between now and 2016 for the PGA is 2014. And the US Open is almost as booked with official bookings for the Open out to 2012 and an absolute certainty of a booking for 2013 at Brookline (100th anniversary of Francis Ouimet's win). Oh, and with the USGA's stated goal of including Pinehurst in the rota, and with Pinehurst not represented in the next 8 years, look for the 2014 or 2015 booking to be at Pinehurst. That means if you want a major in your hometown in the next 10 years, you have only 4 realistic dates to make it happen.

one thing that might be in your favor....all of these "traditional venues" might be having membership issues. if a club has issues; they might not be willing to pony UP the $$$$ it takes to make "MAJOR championship" renovations. OLD Money is leaving the traditional clubs...via death, economy, etc. in droves.
if Inverness in Toledo is having some issues...then i'm sure that others are too.
Inverness would've been a choice for those 4 open spots that Bri' mentioned above.

People who know their golf history should be very sad that Inverness is out of the running. And anyone who cashes a tournament paycheck who doesn't feel a bit sad that Inverness is falling on hard times is a cad with no soul. My how things have changed since 1920 when it was Inverness who reached out to the golf pros.

Dins,
Knowing how much you "love" Seattle, this should crack you up. Looks like Oak Hill's gain was Sahalee's loss.
The announcement of the 2013 PGA Championship being awarded to Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y., this week came as little surprise to Steve Boggs, general manager at Sahalee Country Club.
Boggs hasn't spoken with the PGA since the organization announced the 2010 PGA was moving from the tree-lined course just outside Seattle.
"I don't know if we're on their horizon right now," Boggs said Wednesday. "The tournament is now so huge. ... I'm not too sure if we'll get a PGA Championship again."
Citing concerns of sponsorship conflicts with the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia, the PGA decided in January 2005 to move the 2010 PGA from Sahalee to Whistling Straits in Wisconsin. At the time, the PGA said it would consider bringing the event back to Sahalee sometime between 2012 and 2015.
That is looking unlikely. With the announcement of Oak Hill hosting in 2013, the PGA now has its marquee event booked in 2012 (Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina), 2013 and 2015 (Whistling Straits). The only opening is 2014, and Boggs doesn't sound optimistic.

Amazing how the PGA has gone from the redheaded stepchild of the majors to an equal in just a matter of 10 years.
