What Style Do you play?

Post by buckeye_in_sc »

Most would say a tight aggressive (TAG) style works best...i tend to gravitate toward the TAG style but mix in some loose aggressive pieces to my game...

with most of the people we play with regulary (home games, development tourneys) TAG is usually the way to go as we have about 5 calling stations that just completely donk on many hands and while they do get lucky and catch that 2 or 3 outer for their gutshot to bust your trips or Top Two with Top kicker over the long run I let them hang themselves by playing tight agressive.

what say you guys...i know in a cash game situation you can afford to be more tight aggressive as the blinds don't eat you up as fast, but in tourneys you potentially need to play both styles depending on how the cards are running...

discuss, thoughts?

depends on what kinda game i'm in..if it's a 20+ person tourney..it's definatly TAG until i can make it to the final table or 2 tables...if i can make it tothe final 9..i like to get caught once or twice bluffing ..alot of times you can cash in on a big pot later on in the game if youc an get caught at least once bluffing.

in the home tournies...it's about 70/30 TAG....mostly cause i feel i'm the best player that shows up at the games..and i know i can win any chips i lose at the beginning, later on in the game.

i havent been able to play in any cash games as of yet..besides the 1/2 dollar NL hold'em tables i've sat down in....i'm sure it's more intense and TAG pays off big time in those.

Absolutely. Often referred to as "buying yourself action later." If you ONLY play premium hands, you never get any callers. You have to play "the idiot" every once in a while, when you can keep it cheap. Lose to a really shitty hand when someone is betting like they have middle pair or something, but are running with it, since they think no one is betting anything better. Make SURE everyone knows you went in with crap like an idiot.

Although I guess overall I'd be classified a TAG guy, I try to make sure I never commit myself to any given style of play. I'm the biggest douche in the universe one minute, and the biggest tightass the next.

Always keep your opponents guessing.

The downfall of a strict TAG player is that they're usually easy to get flustered. If someone has committed themself over the course of the longrun to strictly TAG play, they'll eventually pop a gasket when you hand them the pot every single time they bet something. Human nature...but beware -- that other guy generally isn't stupid, and if you don't keep your wits about you while fucking with them, they can lay a heck of a trap for you. But it is possible to force that style of player out of their comfort zone...just hand them every pot that they bet....unless you're pretty sure you're ahead...then take their money -- it's the name of the game.

So this morning before work I log on to Full Tilt to play some $.05/$.10 pot limit omaha...buy in for $5...early going down but then got back up to about $7...then I get dealt AJ109 I know one of my other cards was a 10...the flop comes

AJK hmmm....two pair with a possible straight draw...i bet 1/2 the pot...get two callers prolly like $2 something in the pot now...turn 2...i bet 1/2 the pot again...get the one caller other dude folds...river J...now I am like Jacks full of Aces...money...I bet the max...guy re-raises me (which would put me all in)...so I am thinking there is only one hand at this point that beats me (if I am thinking about it right) and that is Aces Full of Jacks...no way he has quad jacks or aces as I am holding one of them...i figured maybe a straight? set of Kings...so I call...sure enough dude turns over pocket Aces for Aces full of jacks...boat over boat...tough to get away from...but on the re-raise I should have laid it down but well with only one hand beating me...well you win some you lose some...

Harder to get a feel online as he did not raise preflop...but well he played it well and it just so happened I hung myself on what I thought was my money card...I guess the only way to play it differently would have been to check the river...he bets the pot and I call and save some of my stack???

dude, unlike hold'em, you will see quads more in omaha.

ive seen quads lose to other quads. omaha is a very tough game. it's a perfect game to lose a ton of cash waiting for your nut draw. or having about 30 outs after the turn, they suck you in.

the 4 cards suck people in way too much.
