Fla. college students found dead inside promotional balloon

LUTZ, Fla. (AP) — Autopsy results were pending Sunday for two college students whose bodies were found inside a deflated promotional balloon.
The deaths of Jason Ackerman and Sara Rydman, both 21, appear to be accidental, Hillsborough County Sheriff's Maj. Bob Schrader said.
Their bodies were found partially inside a deflated helium balloon at the entrance of a condominium complex a few miles north of Tampa about 9:45 a.m. Saturday. The 8-foot diameter balloon was used to advertise the complex.
The students apparently pulled the balloon from the sky and squeezed through a small opening in the bottom, deputies said.
Rydman's mother told the St. Petersburg Times that authorities suggested to her that inhaling helium contributed to the deaths.
"It was more a fun thing they thought they were doing," Linda Rydman said. "You know how you blow up the balloon and suck the helium ..."
Inhaling helium can quickly lead to brain damage and death from lack of oxygen, according to the Compressed Gas Association, which develops safety standards in the gas industry.
Family members said Ackerman and Rydman attended high school together. Ackerman, son of a prominent Tampa jeweler, was a junior at the University of South Florida. Rydman was studying at Hillsborough Community College.
"I think she was mischievous to be honest with you," Linda Rydman said of her daughter. "She just liked fun, and I think it cost her."

This is not the ugly head of Darwin here... this is Darwin at work at its best.
There is no indication either of these mensa's had procreated, so in one small way the dilution of the gene pool is spared a bit by their failure to spew out an additional ignoramsus such as themselves.
I am guessing that they did not yet take organic chemistry in college yet.

I was speaking from the point of view of a parent, but I see where you're coming from.
I think that both of my kids (8th and 11th grade) have a fairly decent grasp of the concept of
asphyxiation (at least I hope they do), so I'm assuming that either one would probably be able to avoid the situation described above.
But then, my daughter passed the California High School Exit Exam on her first try without "studying" for it, in 9th grade - something that 10% of California HS seniors haven't yet been able to do. I guess that a passing grade of 55% on 8th grade level math and 60% on 9th grade level English is too much to ask of a lot of kids these days.
I think a few more of those balloons might be in order around these parts.

Don't bother preparing for the test. You're better off spending your time finding a lawyer and suing the state DoE. If we could just convince the little angels that climbing into a balloon for a few minutes would help them be smart enough to pass...

No... hopefully big payout will allow siblings to buy fast cars and motorcycles, and lots of drugs and shit and off themselves that way before THEY procreate.

The kid played baseball w/ my little brother in HS. He was a Sophomore when my brother was a Senior. My brother said its ironic that Helium did him in compared to the other things the kid used to do.
