N.J.’s ‘Pimp of the Year’ was cruel and greedy, prostituite testifies

Kemyra Jemerson was a 16-year-old high school drop-out from Paterson, N.J., when she met Matthew Thompkins in New York City.

Soon, as she became one of his stable of prostitutes, Jemerson began calling him "Daddy."

For the next six years, until her arrest in December, Jemerson worked for Thompkins in New York, Atlantic City, Philadelphia, Las Vegas, Boston and other cities - sometimes for 18 hours a day.

Jemerson calculated from the journal Thompkins forced her to keep that, in 2004, she made more than $220,000. All of the money went to Thompkins, while he gave her $20 a day in "front money."
Once, when Jemerson used some of that front money to buy marijuana, Thompkins beat her and another prostitute with a metal chain.

"It appears that Thompkins had this girl in modern-day slavery," Jemerson's attorney, Troy A. Archie said this afternoon. "She's a defendant in this case, but she's also a victim."

Jemerson, now 23, pleaded guilty today in federal court in Camden to money laundering and transporting minors for the purpose of prostitution.

As part of Thompkins stable, she was required to "bring home" other girls. Jemerson admitted to recruiting 40 other women, including several minors.

She faces a mandatory minimum of five years in prison when she is sentenced. Thompkins and another accused pimp, Demetrius Lemus, are scheduled to face trial in October.

Authorities siezed two "Pimp of the Year" trophies from Thompkins'
home when they arrested him last year.
