Apostrophe Usage Made Simple
by Michael LaRocca
APOSTROPHE USAGE MADE SIMPLE
Copyright 2005, Michael LaRocca
According to one of my previous articles, whenever a Southerner
says "Y'all watch this," get out of the way because those are
probably the last words he will ever say.
Well, I'm a Southerner. I used to live in the southeastern
United States, but I moved to the southeast of China. And, I'm
about to say the magic words:
Y'all watch this.
The word is "week." If I want to talk about more than one week,
like what I wrote a few weeks ago, I'll use weeks. No apostrophe.
If I want to talk about something belonging to a week, such as
"last week's newsletter," I'll use an apostrophe.
That's the rule. If it's a noun, s makes it plural and
apostrophe-s makes it possessive. It's just that simple.
If I were still in the US, and I wanted one of those fancy
carved signs that are so common on southern lawns, it would not
read "The LaRocca's." The LaRocca's what? His lawn? His sign?
That apostrophe makes it singular possessive, so The LaRocca
(one person) is surely claiming ownership of something. If that
wasn't his intent, and he whacked in an apostrophe anyway, he's
an idiot.
What about plural possessive? Is it "the LaRoccas' house" or
"the LaRoccas's house?" Well, it's neither, since my wife isn't
a LaRocca and we don't own a house. But for the sake of this
article, pretend she is and we do.
In ON WRITING, Stephen King swears it's LaRoccas's. When I was a
student, my teachers swore it was LaRoccas'. As an editor, I've
heard the first was US standard and the second was UK standard.
And the answer is, I don't care. Just be consistent.
I once met an editor who said that the spelling determines
pronunciation. She's an idiot. Spelling isn't all pronunciation.
It's also history. I'll say LaRoccas-zz whether it's LaRoccas' or
LaRoccas's. So will you.
Jump up five paragraphs and read the seventh word. Noun. Note
that I didn't write pronoun. Just for fun, the rule for pronouns
and apostrophes is completely different.
It's is a contraction for "it is" and its is possessive. Who's
is a contraction for "who is" and whose is possessive. There's
is a contraction for "there is" and theirs is possessive. Etc.
Possessive pronouns never use apostrophes. Its, whose, your,
yours, their, theirs...
And there you have it. Apostrophe usage made simple.

You referring to any sentient being as an idiot is always good for a chuckle.

You should probably knock out a plan a little more and then you can probably either buy what you want or build your own.
Do you need some device that would record 24/7 everything or something that would be set off from an accident and would keep 30 seconds before and after the event recorded? If you wanted a real cheap solution, you could just get your hands on an older PC, or build a small one for a few hundred smackers, buy a camera or two and then connect the cameras to your dash (and maybe one to your rear windows) and just run a software that would either record an image every 10 seconds or would look for activity and then record video or if you have enough space, then it would just record always and it would be up to you to catch and save recordings you wanted to store as evidence.
You might look at some Police car websites and check out some basic systems. For anything that is geared torward Police, expect to pay over $1000. Whats interesting that they just use specialized handheld cameras (w/ nightvision) and some wireless mic systems. They also wire the system into the car so that it can be triggered by airbag activation and/or seatbelt locking or any other thing.
You may also want to search around some CarPC sites and see if someone has done anything with GPS, CarPC and video. I know that some people have busted service techs driving their cars 100mph+ using the GPS software in the system. You can build a CarPC for close to $1k if you do the work yourself and then all you would need is a small camera, cables and the software to record it all. With a large enough HD built into the PC, you could record video in low resolution for hours.
Of course your cheapest solution may just be a cheap night vision capable camera you mount and record crappy quality onto a tape 4 to 6 hours at a time. Then if nothing happens, just recycle the tape and start again for another 4 to 6 hours.
Good luck!

Some Interesting Links:
http://www.stickypod.com/stickypod_dash_cam.html
for mounding any camera.
http://www.hoyttech.com/
Some good ideas for helmet and car cams, but I'm not sure its really what you are looking for. Its made more for short quick action shots like street racing or TRT. Interestingly enough, Best Buy has a small unit for about $500 that is super small, although it does not offer night vision, that you might be able to purchase a large enough memory card for to let it run for a few hours and also just take it out of the car and take with you on other adventures when needed.
http://www.mp3car.com/store/index.php
If you need info on Car PC related stuff, this is a good place to start. mp3car.com has a forum with a lot of experiance so if you decide to build your own solution, you can ask them for some ideas and their store has everything you need for the actual PC component including touch screens and other components. Most of the stuff can also be picked up from Ebay or other stores.

Of course Ebay is always a great resource, as long as you know what you are trying to get. You should do your research, but this might be a great solution if it works as advertised for a camera. Then you just need something to record the video on (A tape deck or a PC...)
