Steelers QB Injured In Accident
Ben Roethlisberger is in a Pittsburgh hospital after his motorbike collided with a car this morning.
Pittsburgh, PA -- Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has been involved in a motorcycle accident.
It happened this morning in Pittsburgh.
Witnesses tell authorities that the player's motorcycle collided with a car near a downtown intersection and that Roethlisberger's head hit the windshield and was bleeding. Roethlisberger has said in the past that he prefers not to wear a helmet when riding.
One witness tells KDKA television that Roethlisberger was conscious but appeared disoriented before he was taken from the scene to Mercy Hospital.
A Steelers spokesman is at the hospital and confirms Roethlisberger is being treated there, but won't provide additional details.

Because it's not "cool".
Here's a guy, 6'5" a Super Bowl QB on a team with a legacy of being the toughest, in a motherfucking tough town (steel city) ..... And he's worried about looking "cool" ?
Or maybe he just likes the feel of the breeze running through his hair, like eating a york peppermint patty.

Ben's propensity for riding without a helmet has been much-discussed here in Pittsburgh. He was apparently on a "ninja" style bike - riding fast in a bike in traffic is just idiotic.
The intersection is literally right below Mercy Hospital. In fact, here is a pic:

Nope. But it might kill their chances of going anywhere in the playoffs. Will a motor bike keep the steelers out of the playoffs?
Best case scenario is that this accident just knocked some sense into him.

Is this moron for real?Roethlisberger injured in motorcycle crash
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was injured in a motorcycle crash Monday morning and taken to a hospital.
"He was alert and conscious," said Ernie Roman, shift commander for the Allegheny County emergency service.
Steelers Dave Lockett, outside Mercy Hospital, confirmed the accident but did not provide additional details.
In only his second year in the NFL, Roethlisberger helped guide the Steelers to the Super Bowl championship last season.
Calls to Roethlisberger's agent, Leigh Steinberg, were not immediately returned.
The 24-year-old Roethlisberger has said in the past that he prefers not to wear a helmet when riding his motorcycle. He has pointed out Pennsylvania's 35-year-old state law requiring helmets to be worn was amended to make helmets optional.
In May 2005, Steelers coach Bill Cowher lectured Roethlisberger on the dangers of riding without a helmet.
"He talked about being a risk-taker and I'm not really a risk-taker. I'm pretty conservative and laid back, but the big thing is to just be careful," Roethlisberger said at the time. "I'll just continue to be careful. I told him we don't ever ride alone, we always ride in a group of people, and I think it makes it even more safe."
I guess you're better off splitting your dome open in a group of people than by yourself.

Are you serious? People don't learn shit from the misfortunes of celebrities. Do you think people have stopped having unprotected sex because of Freddie Mercury and Easy E? Do you think Deadheads have given up drugs because of Jerry Garcia? You think Led Zeppelin fans gave up binge drinking because of John Bohnam?Toddowen wrote:The good thing about this is that people will hopefully wake up to the danger of riding without a helmet when they see that Rothlisdrooler's coordination is shot and he's unable to even place the key in the ignition.
He could come out of this without a scratch on his body, yet be unable to accomplish something as simple as tying his shoelaces.
No chance dude.

Don’t believe that Reggie had diabetes. Don’t believe he died of heart failure. Just didn’t want the uninformed to get the impression that Jerry Garcia died from a drug overdose.

You don't need to overdose to die from drugs. Jerry had plenty of help weakening his heart from Sister Morphine and her Cousin Cocaine. On the bright side, it shouldn't affect his looks or his footspeed too much. The extent of his injuries was not known, although the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported that police said Roethlisberger lost most of his teeth, fractured his left sinus cavity bone, suffered a 9-inch laceration to the back of his head and a broken jaw, and severely injured both of his knees.

From everything I’ve ever read, his hard drug of choice was heroin. But a lot of addicts live longer lives than that, probably due to the fact that they aren’t seriously overweight as Garcia was. No doubt he had drug issues, I just believe that the excess weight and diabetes were more significant in causing his death at age 53.BSmack wrote:You don't need to overdose to die from drugs. I think we can all agree that Garcia was one unhealthy motherfucker. Whether it was the drugs or the twinkies, I guess you can speculate all you want. I personaly think the heroin could not have possibly helped his heart.Goober McTuber wrote:From everything I’ve ever read, his hard drug of choice was heroin. I just have to say that you have to love the way the Pittsbugh media is writing this stuff up. Check this out.

WTF? Is Danielle Steele ghost writing the copy for the Post Gazette? Will she now nurse Ben back to health in the enbrace of her warm willing busom?Sandra Ford, a Homewood writer and artist, was waiting for a bus near the bridge about 11 a.m. She saw a rugged-looking white man with curly hair on his motorcycle driving along the avenue heading toward the bridge.

Hang on, the reports are wildly different. The Tribune has Ben half in the grave while the Post Gazette says "Another good thing is it is minor enough that it shouldn't affect him on the field this fall."Cicero wrote:Yeah, they better find a QB cause wont be playing this season.
And then I have a poster over on Stillers.com who says...
But that's nothing more than unsubstantiated rumor.Ben's surgery is consisting of repaiting his face, replacing his teeth, wiring his jaw, and sewing up the lacerations...Prelim tests show no damage to his eyes...The reports of bad knees is because of road rash...He is missing some skin down there, but should recover pretty easily...He does have a concussion, but as of now, no brain damage or hematoma that can be seen...He will obviously be watched closely, and more than likely, he will be moved to UPMC after he stabalizes...

Friday I was riding with a group SE of Portland in the sticks. Even though a moron at a stop sign on a cross street had a clear view of us he pulled out from the sign he was behind & right in front of the lead rider. If it wasn't for the rider's quick reactions (braking, downshifting, honking....& bonus points for a finger) he would have hit the rider. It doesn't matter how "careful" a rider is....the cagers are constantly pulling shit that puts the riders in jeapardy.
Let those who ride (and carry enough insurance to cover their brain injury treatment) decide (whether they want to put themselves at the bottom of the gene pool or remove themselves completely).

Helmet?Toddowen wrote:Rothlisburger's just a plain ignoramus for not wearing a helmet.
Another vehicle need not even be involved. Someone can be walking their dog on the side of the road and the thing can jump out into your path. Your intial knee-jerk reaction to avoid it causes you to lose control.
One of my crashes was in Redondo Beach. I took a corner and hit a small oil spot in the road. I had the bike fall right out from under me and dove headfirst into the curb. It put a massive dent into the helmet right above the forehead. That's all it takes to become a drooling invalid for the rest of your life if you don't wear a helmet.
Like how about just staying off a motorcycle, period?
Unless you believe that broken bones, torn ligaments, and skin abrasions make that "freedom" somehow worth it.
Sorry for the broadbrush, but if you ride a motorbike, you are a candidate for the above.
Don't worry so much about wearing a helmet...worry more about having your family jewells removed by a guardrail when you encounter it at waist height at 55 mph.
Toddowen wrote:Rothlisburger's just a plain ignoramus for not wearing a helmet. That's all it takes to become a drooling invalid for the rest of your life if you don't wear a helmet.
You make a good point but let's all face the facts, until this took place? no one really gave a rats ass if he had a helmet on or not. I am sure this is not his first time on a bike w/o a helmet. and if the NFL has no rules? then we can only sit back and chaulk it off as an off the field injury. There should be some guidelines of sort.
This is another good point. After all doesn't the Pope avoid strip clubs? Do you see Bush's wife shopping in Iraq? Do DEA officers hang out at Snoop Dog's live shows? Then why would any NBA/NFL player be seen on a Bike, Horse, or on skies? looks like the man will need to be in a wheelchair before anyone takes notice.War Wagon wrote:Helmet?

I see people do crazy shit while driving every fucking day. To me, it's nuts to assume you'll be safe with your body totally exposed in city or highway traffic. Yes, the freedom of being on a bike sans helmet is attractive, but facial reconstruction surgery (and let it be pointed out again that Big Ben is EXTREMELY FORTUNATE) ain't a party I want to hang at.
My wife and I initially butted heads at whether to force our kids to wear bicycle helmets, even during casual riding, because I never did, but lately I have moved over to share her POV.

I don't get the appeal of riding sans helmet. When one is riding at 50mph or faster, even small pebbles kicked up by cars can sting pretty well on pants. I can't imagine what it's be like getting hit in the face by one (or something larger). Yes I wear my full-face helmet in case I go down; however, I also like how it keeps my face from looking like Manuel Noriega or Roger Hedgecock.
