Redick

All year long we hear how great this kid is, how he is different from most kids and has his shit together. We have to listen to story after story about his mom and dad selling bibles door-to-door....and then this. He gets a DWI and not just a regular "pulled over by the cops" but makes an illegal U-turn at a police check point. Yeah, they don't check for those types of things.

Like none of us drive after a night out at the bars. Some of us have just been lucky. Making an illegal Uie usually isnt the smartest thing though when you are trying not to attract the PoPo.

Waiting for the DukeHaters/vultures to circle...

Even yours truly, Mr. Squeaky Clean, has driven while being legally intoxicated. You can hide your condition by just driving normal...don't do any illegal moves. I bet he did the U-turn out of habit considering he's used to running around the top of screens to get open for a three. Shame on you, JJ!

Don't even tell me you're trying to defend the guy.

He was caught "Driving while Impaired". Not defending but not going to shit all over him for something that most of us do every weekend.

Yes, we all probably have been impaired here and there. As Sky pointed out, J.J. was put into this light as the can do no wrong type of kid. Not the type of thing you want to see happen right before the draft.

This will not effect his draft status one iota. Considering the league is filled w/ criminal masterminds, this hardly qualifies.

I recall he was put into a light of being a great shooter and someone who was shit on everywhere he went, enduring more unjustified crap than any ballplayer ever, simply for being a good player and nothing more. I never saw anything where he was building homes for the poor or trying to stop the baby seal hunts or singing in the church choir. Please be fair. That said, I'm not about to defend him or anyone for drinking and driving. He deserves a stiff fine, public shame, and whatever penalties that go along with this. He's lucky he didn't hurt himself or anyone else.

Pssst - you don't REALLY have to let the media create an opinion FOR YOU on someone. If anyone thinks ANYONE, in ANY occupation, endeavor or facet of life is exempt from fucking up, then you my friend are as ignorant as they come.

What Redick did wasn't one of those "poor choices" that makes him a bad guy. It's one of those "poor choices" that was an irresponsible mistake, and one that he needs to learn from in order to avoid again in the future. This doesn't change the way I think about him any differently. Fuck, not saying it's right, but what kid, college grad or otherwise, HASN'T driven impaired at some point? If we judged everyone on this type of folly, there wouldn't be a decent person left alive.

I personally think that his agent asked him to do it because they could market JJ to more teams if he had some "street cred." He's going to Portland for SURE now. :D

What a stupid joke. That stereotype doesn't even fit...

Redick can hit an open shot...not Blazer material.

Most of us? This is a normal weekend for you?

I never said he wasn't exempt from fucking up. I'm surprised it was a DWI.

What I think Mucho and I were trying to say was this: JJ was described and carried himself as a college student who had his act together and was probably a little more mature than most CBB players. All the crap other fans gave him was a big deal because he didn't react in a negative manner. Ultimately, the media cast him as a golden child who excelled in BB while attending a premier university. He didn't make the mistakes so many other student athletes make.

Thus, the DWI was a big deal. It was uncharacteristic and ill-timed. Plus, the whole U-turn to avoid a check point (knowing that they look for those things) seems out of character. While I hope there are few or no negative impacts, I also feel like this phenomenal player might fit the mold of many who have gone before him.
