Smart move. Played more than 5 years, so he will qualify for the NFL pention program, he isnt as banged up physically as he would have been if he played a couple of years and his name wont be dragged through the mud as another casualty of performance enhancing drugs.

Wouldn't necessarily surprise me; however, if it was a positive test, I doubt he'd still be on the active roster. Sounds more like he pulled the "take my ball and go home" card during contract talks and King Carl called the bluff.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the trade orchestrated largely due to the fact he was squabbling with the Eagles over money, as well?

I also won't be surprised if he suddenly unretires during the latter stages of training camp. Won't have a starting job at that point but, then again, indications were such that he wasn't going to have one anyway.

Who needs the overrated punk, anyways? We've now got a completely healthy (all reports indicate) Kyle Turley ready to step in and take his chronically PUP place.

The only weak link on the Chiefs O-line has now been repaired.

Yippee!

Welbourn has a masters degree and is going to law school. He sounds to me like a guy who is ready to move on.

Shields, Roaf and Wiegmann will be 35, 36, and 33 respectively this season.

Gettin' a bit long in the tooth, as is the the KC offense in general.

Good luck, Paul.

Chieffan myopia running full steam ahead. Can't wait for another classic meltdown during the regular season.

Been hearing that same line that last 3 seasons. The skeptics may finally be right this year. 4th time is a charm. :meds:

If it does happen all you tards will be like "See I told you they were old". "I knew they were going to fall off this year". Yeah, it's only the 4th fucking year in a row you've said it. Eventually you will be right. Hell even a retarded ape can do that.

4th year?

Did I miss something or did this team actually do something in the playoffs recently?

Getting there is a real good start but then again, that is usually right when it ends for these guys too. :?

Um, yea that's why they call it the superbowl! The best TEAM wins and the last time that I checked, the OL is part of a team :meds: Having a Quief fan call me a tard is about as fresh as Michael Jackson calling somebody a pedophile :D

Actually, dumbass, the quotes I used involved Nix, not Paul...not that either needed any "rescuing". They were both doing a fine job of bashing your idiocy of saying that because Pitt won the SB, ergo, they must have had the best O-Line. By your inane logic, they must have also had the best players at every single position on the damn field. Both Offensive and Defensive.

Hell, let's take it a step or two further. They must have also had all the best coaches, trainers, cheerleaders, and fucking announcers as well, eh?

AZ puker, the next time you want to log on here and blurt out stupidity, just don't do it.

A superbowl ring represents the finest TEAM of that season and I know that it's hard for you figure that out. The Quiefs O-Line was NOT the best in the NFL and it would appear that since the Steelers won the big game, they just might have a better o-Line.....just stating facts FUCKSTICK!

Much as I would love to agree with you, I can't. The Steelers O line was in a rebuilding phase last year. In particular Max Starks and Kendall Simmons are still not anywhere near where they need to be as NFL linemen.

That's why, when the playoffs came Cowher was so quick to gamble on Roethlisberger's arm. He knew that in a playoff game, he could not count on his O line to dominate the way they should have. Last year's Steelers offensive line was a middle of the pack group that was able to get over because the defense put it in great field position more often than not.

Update ... looks like e was on the money ...
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City Chiefs tackle John Welbourn, who unexpectedly retired in June, was suspended for six weeks Wednesday for violating the league's drug policy.

Welbourn, who was also suspended for the first four games in 2005 under the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs, had asked to be reinstated, said Chiefs president Carl Peterson.

The Chiefs still have Welbourn under contract for three years. And with the unexpected retirement in July of Pro Bowl left tackle Willie Roaf, they have a need at offensive tackle. But whether the 30-year-old Welbourn is taken back remains to be seen, Peterson said.

"We'll determine that after the suspension is finished. I'm not going to comment on that," Peterson told The Associated Press.

The Chiefs had placed him on the reserve-did not report list.

"Obviously I knew about this for some time," Peterson said. "I guess you could say we anticipated this."

The Chiefs have an early bye week this season, so Welbourn's suspension will last seven weeks, during which he will not be allowed on the facility to work out or do anything else.

An announcement by the NFL office in New York said he would be eligible to return to the Chiefs on Oct. 23.

"Specific to what his status will be with the Chiefs after the suspension, we'll address at that time," Peterson said.

A seven-year veteran, Welbourn cited a desire "to retire on my own terms rather than somebody else's," when he retired in June.

He has a degree in rhetoric from California and said he planned to go to law school and work with his father and brother, who are attorneys.

Welbourn was acquired by Kansas City from Philadelphia in 2004 after coming into the league as a fourth-round draft choice in 1999. He was hampered by a knee injury during his first year in Kansas City, and then was suspended for the beginning of the 2005 schedule.

He started the last nine games at right tackle for the Chiefs last year.

Peterson said he had not talked recently with Welbourn.

"I hope he's learned something," Peterson said. "This is two strikes. It's perplexing because he is a very bright guy."

A third positive test for performance-enhacing drugs would subject him to a 10-game suspension and he could be banned for life at the discretion of the commissioner.
