DES MOINES, Iowa -- An Iowa congressman has apologized for disparaging comments he made about a veteran White House correspondent.

Republican Steve King was discussing the death of terrorist leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi Saturday at the state Republican convention when he mentioned 85-year-old Helen Thomas.

King said about Zarqawi, "There probably are not 72 virgins in the hell he's at." He went on to say, "And if there are, they probably all look like Helen Thomas."

A spokeswoman for the two-term congressman said in an e-mail that King has apologized to Thomas.

Thomas has covered the White House for nearly 50 years and is a columnist for Hearst Newspapers.

King is running for re-election this fall. His Democratic opponent called his remarks uncivil.

What's wrong with Helen Thomas? At least she's female, and she has a brain. All women get old, just like all men do. A hole is a hole (female wise).

What he's really saying is that women have no use beyond a certain age or with a certain intellect or aligned with a certain political stance, because all women are to him are semen receptacles. He's a jackass, or a closet homosexual. Or both.

Actually the only way it is at all humorous is if you take it out of context, unless you think finding Helen Thomas sexually unappealing is a sign of closet homosexuality. King's quote on the other hand, was quite humorous.

No, Annie had a point, in that women should have a value beyond a certain age. Helen Thomas is 85, so she's obviously not my idea of a hottie, but she's still sharp. I hope I'm as sharp as her when I'm that age, although I probably won't make it that far.
