I was going to simply say "religion" as a whole but really Christianity and Islam are the root cause of the largest number of deaths among all religions.

Beyond that, beyond the crushing violence mankind has perpetrated upon itself in the name of those two individuals, hey, there's also the obvious notion of world poverty that's nearly the exclusive province of religious based societies.

So, yeah, maybe I should just go ahead and substitute "religion" as a whole at #1.
