The socal family is soon to embark on a roadtrip to include four nights in Durango. If we survive the searing heatzilla that is Arizona, and if my progeny can momentarily look up from their electronic leashes, we hope to see some beautiful country. We plan to take the narrow guage railroad along the Animas River one day, river rafting the next.

Any of you been there? Your thoughts? I will cherish any and all replies, sincere and smart alecky (sp?), and save them in my database for future distribution of my home delivered ice cream.

Never been there but it sounds like an awesome road trip. I hope you guys have a great time. My wife's cousin has a cabin up there and we have been invited to come up any time, but the OL just doesn't seem interested for some reason.

Keep the windows closed and the AC on whilst driving through AZ. Experience the scenery in mechanically cooled comfort and you should be fine.

m2's Colorado 'trip' frankly sounded like more fun.

Don't you (mister middle-aged man) have any plans to chill with a bunch of stinky carnival losers and underage female runaways .... ?

I go to Colorado a bit on business. Since my job entails driving to all size towns, I have hit that area quite a bit.

Make sure you go to Mesa Verde Natl Park near Cortez. Ancient Indian cliff dwellings there. The drive from Durango to Del Norte is beautiful with mountain passes, lush valleys and all. Course there's plenty to do in Durango as well. Have fun..it won't be hard there.

I've been to Durango. Have no clue what I did there. We where on a whirlwind trip through Colorado/Arizona when I was a teen. I do remember going to the Mesa Verde National Park that Neck mentioned.

I went to college there so needless to say I don't remember much.


Isn't much to do there which is just the way I like it. The railroad is a must as is Mesa Verde. Also a nice hot springs just outside the downtown area. Close to a fun bar called the Iron Horse. Durango is also the mountain biking capital of the world. Plenty of biking/hiking trails. I miss it alot. Have a blast!!

Tell me that you don't plan on rafting on the Colorado, unless you enjoy fighting a headwind on a lazy, boring ass river all day.

Instead, head up towards Buena Vista or Salida and try the Browns canyon run on the Arkansas, and you'll be talking about it for years.

The river in Durango is the Animas I believe. Not sure of its rapids......
