Its so hot that they don't expect to have my power back on until Monday and that fucking sucks monkey red rocket. Fucking brick houses act like ovens holding in the heat. I've taken four cold baths in the past 24 hours just to cool off. I'm calling up Bill Walton to see if I can borrow a tent.
Got three streets in my neighborhood blocked off due to fallen trees. Since Wednesday night. Still.
Currently at work unshaven. I'm thinking about going out to see crap movies like Pirates of the Carribean just for the Air Conditioning.

You are joking, right?
Believe it or not, 'round these parts, we've been known to have a tree or two. Sometimes in WINTER when the heavy storms roll through(WTF is up with storms in summer?), them big 'ol trees topple on an occasion.
And that gives city/utility crews a handful. So, when there's a tree down across our street...check this out...we get out there with a fucking chainsaw and get it out of the street.
Yeah, novel fucking concept, eh?

#1. Surely, dinser's aware of convection and latent heat and how both are so predominant during the spring/summer months. I mean, this is DINS we're talking about. [dins]Tell me you knew.[/dins]Dinsdale wrote:(WTF is up with storms in summer?)

I guess I'm casually aware...it just boggles my mind that people would actually live in such places.Ken wrote:#1. Surely, dinser's aware of convection and latent heat and how both are so predominant during the spring/summer months.
Storms are for winter.

OK, you're not catching on.
Yes, I assume the downed trees haven't been dealt with because there are many for the city/municipal crews to deal with.
That was kinda my point -- 'round these parts, if the street is blocked, you don't wait for the city crew to come clear it for you, you get out a freaking saw and do it yourself. Just like we keep our own storm drains cleared, rather than waiting for the city to do it, so the street doesn't flood in the fall.
I'm actually suprised to hear that someone would stay trapped in their house while waiting for the city to show up at its earliest convenience.
Plus, you get free firewood that way, close to home. Win/win.

I have chainsaw and chainsaw's cousin, chainsaw-on-a-stick.
What I don't have is any interest in messing with trees that are currently leaning or tangled up in power lines.
I know U&L is so awesome that when a tree hits the power line, the tree wills itself into grounding the electricity so that all are safe. For those trees with weak wills, people like Dins go out there with chainsaws and Darwin works his magic. Circle of life.
Wind wasn't really that strong anyway Wednesday night:

The U&L is so awesome, we actually keep anough crews on staff that anytime there's a live powerline down, it's dealt with very quickly. Then again, in winter (when storms are supposed to happen), it's such a regular occurance here(probably 10 days like that last winter), there's probably a lot more infrastructure to handle it...just a guess.
Unless you live deep in the woods...then you're fairly fucked. In the city....you rarely have to wait more than a couplefew hours before they've at least got the powerline out of the road and out of the trees.
You people are weird.

I've done my best not to keep up, but I don't think Enron owns our juice anymore.
They didn't run the show, regardless. They just stole the money, and left the rest autonomous. Probably good thing, since a big inland storm is a pretty serious deal. Getting stuck like the stuation Bace is in that I'm making light of, fucking suxorz.
But hey, on the bright side, that refrigerator always smells pretty tasty when you get the power back.

Does U&L keep enough people on staff to get 520,000 people back up and running in a day? People have been brought in from other electric companies to help.

But, all of the major lines get fixed within hours, the ones left in the cold(that stuff only happens in winter here, literally unheard of spring through fall) are people in places where they're "in a corner" of the grid. For instance, if a downed line is only affecting 2-3 homes, and poses no safety risk, then those folks might be SOL for a couple of days when it gets that bad.
When 7-digits worth of people lost power with the massive storms of 95-96, a friend waited over a week, but it was only his house without power on his block. Mine was out for less than 6 hours, but I lived in a heavily populated area at the time. Then again, the offending line at my place was laying in the street, which I'm sure bumped the priority level...well, that and one of my tweeker neighbors nominated himself to be the neighborhood traffic cop, who took it upon himself to try and stop us folks across the street from getting into our driveway, which promptly earned him an asskicking from my next door neighbor, so I think the cops wanted our little slice of white-trash heaven dealt with ASAP.
Good times.

I did not know this. Haven't been to your neck of the woods in a few years. Freaking love it there. If there was any money to be had, I could easily live there...I'm allowed, right? I mean, I am an Oregon native and whatnot.

Dins has nothing to do with any meth trade.
If he did, we have these places up here called Estacada and Banks, aka Incestacada and Cranks.
I did a bunch of work in Coos Bay 3-4 years ago. Plenty of toothless dumbfucks running around, but plenty of seriously nice folks, too.
And the Dunes are pretty sweet.
Is the chunck of the shipwreck still sticking up out of the water?

Although I don't be one to ring the public power bell, since our power was taken over by a public utility, the power has been out once for about 15 seconds. But hey, on the bright side, that refrigerator always smells pretty tasty when you get the power back.
When it was owned and managed by PGE, it was out... oh every day sometimes.....and the power bill went from $ 180 per month to about $ 78.
Hmmmmm... then again another public utility, Western Oregon Coop, has some of the highest rates around.

So...the resident golf expert has yet to play the "finest public course on the planet" WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE SAME FREAKING STATE IN WHICH HE LIVES!?!? PONDEROUS!Dinsdale wrote:Dammit, one of these days, I'll do Bandon Dunes. Supposedly the finest public course on the planet, or so the golf magazines tell me.

I didn't realize Qbert lived in Oregon. Unless you were talking about Derron, who just mentioned that he had played Bandon?
For myself...nope, never done any of the three courses at Bandon. Not that ponderous, since Oregon isn't exactly a small place, and Bandon is a loooooong way from here(South Coast). It's roughly 5 hours of hauling ass from here.
Oh, and during peak season, by the time you get done with fees and caddies and whatnot, you're in it about $300 a round. Just because it's a pubby, doesn't mean it's cheap.
If it gives you more to ponder, I've also never played either of the courses close to home where they regularly hold Majors and big tournies. I like to play a lot, and as much as I'd like to, I can't justify spending hundreds of dollars a week golfing. I'd rather play a "nice" course 4 times, rather than a "really nice" one once. Probably put that to the test here very shortly, matter of fact. I can make a major roadie and play the #1 rated public course in the country for $300(not counting hotels and gas and whatsuch), or if I do a Twighlight deal, and drive for a few minutes, I can play the #27 rated public course in the country...for $10(and "live to fight" another day). Hmmmm.....let me think that one over.
OK, I thought about it. Probably end up here --

Not quite Bandon, but good enough to host the US Ameteur Championship on an occasion, and good enough to host the Portland City Championship every year.
But today....I'm going wherever my golf buddies want to go.

Uhm...cracked any golf periodical in the last few years? Oooooooobviously not, otherwise you wouldn't have said something so stupid.
Better write to them and set them straight.
Allegedly, the PGA/USGA is absolutely drooling over an Open at Bandon. Problem is, it's hundreds of miles from any major population center(the way Q prefers it, I'm sure), the nearest place with any sort of hotels to hold any meaningful number of people is 10 miles away(and Coos Bay doesn't have much in the way of nice accomodations, and even the crummy ones wouldn't hold an Open's worth...not even close), and there's no decent airport anywhere near there.
But besides that, there would be no finer place in the land for an Open. Maybe when the next round of bidding goes down(in what...3-4 years?), there might be better infrastructure, but don't hold your breath.
Until then, it will remain a golf desitination for the wealthy, pretty much. Gotta be good for the economy down there, which took a beating after forestry mismanagement.
