Chiefs' Roaf retires
By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star
RIVER FALLS, Wis. | Tackle Willie Roaf, the foundation of one of the NFL’s best offensive lines, has retired.

Roaf wasn’t with the Chiefs when they reported for training camp on Thursday. Roaf told The Kansas City Star this morning by telephone that he had told president/general Carl Peterson and coach Herm Edwards of his plans weeks ago and even sent the Chiefs a letter declaring his intentions.

“I guess they want me to reconsider,’’ Roaf told The Star. “I’m solid on retiring and going back to school.’’

Roaf, 36, was emphatic in the spring that he would play this season. But today he said lingering hamstring and knee trouble led to his decision.

Roaf missed six games last season because of hamstring problems. He missed half of the 2001 season while playing for New Orleans after tearing knee ligaments.

Roaf joined the Chiefs in a trade from the Saints in 2002 and was a major factor in their offensive success. His retirement leaves a significant hole at left tackle.

Edwards said Thursday the Chiefs would use Jordan Black at left tackle and Kyle Turley at right tackle when practice begins this afternoon.

Roaf played 13 NFL seasons and made the Pro Bowl in all but two of them. Despite playing on only teams to reach the playoffs, Roaf will likely be selected for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

This makes the Chiefs a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

They got Kyle Turley. They should be fine.

They also lost one of the best blocking FB's in the league this offseason... that sucks!

"Sorry to have to break this little tidbit of news to our fellow AFC West fans here, but this retirement officially made the Chiefs the odds-on favorites to win the AFC West OUTRIGHT.

Sin.

I actually hope your right...that way the rest us will be saved from the inevitable "well, if Roaf hadn't retired we'd have won the whole thing"

I'm pulling for youse guys.....

Uhh...it is my understanding if you claim "retirement" that you have to sit out a year no matter what. This keeps players from "retiring" to avoid the $14,000/day fine.

Actually, the reason that was the case with Ricky Williams was becasue he was already in the substance abuse program so he had to sit a year no matter what since he "retired". Not sure what the stance is if someoen wasn't in the program.

...and still champion.

It takes so much to go right for +2000 to happen.

Not something you can predict fools. It does not just happen and you have to have the right schedule, which I still don't think you have for LJ to break 2000 or the record even if your line stayed in place.

Not that anything has happened yet but you guys talk like you expect him to do it, like it is almost a given. That's funny.

So if you announce retirement and do not file papers, are you subject to the 14k fine?

Watching him gimp back to the huddle over the last few years, this was bound to happen at some point, and I'd be real surprised to see this turn into some training-camp loophole.

Shit happens, but the sky isn't falling. He was hurt for most of last year and missed six games. If they haven't figured out the fact they're going to have to play without him at some point by now, they never will.

Roaf will be missed ... that's for certain, but this team is still in good shape to contend in the West.

Wake me if Green or Johnson retires, and I'll sing a different tune.

Perhaps, but my plans for a Super Bowl party just had a severe damper placed on them.

Jordan Black, aka I-55 directly to the QB, is going to replace Big Willie?

The few games that schmuck played last year were pathetic as he aimlessly whiffed on his pass protection assignments time after freaking time.

Hell, Green won't be retiring...he'll be on the IR if he has to depend on I-55 to protect his blindside.

This news sucks for Chief fan.

Seems like I've heard this song before.

Put me in the category of "I think he'll get coaxed back in time for the season opener"

Not quite anybody.

It's an obscure clause that stipulates that in order to eligible for this bennie, you must be at least a 10 time Pro-Bowl selection and a future first ballot HOF'er.

Are you now saying that without Roaf the Chiefs are suddenly NOT favorites to win the west? Sheesh, talk about your bandwagon fucks. :meds:

I didn't say anything resembling that, B. You said it, not me.
OK, so we have you on record that the Chiefs are still your pick to win the AFC West. Better put to heavy duty shocks on that bandwagon. I don't think it can take much more of your jumping on and off again.

Scott, skeptical fuck that I am, normally I'd be with you on this one. However, for what ever reason, I seem to think he is being upfront, honest, and has indeed retired. Color me a fool if he returns.
