WTF is wrong with me?

I drank some wine last night. Kind of embarrassed to say what kind, but it wasn't a box of wine. In any case, my allergies have been getting the best of me lately, but last night, after drinking the wine (which I didn't realize at the time), I got into such a coughing frenzy. I could hardly breathe without coughing right after. And not a *oohooh* cough. One that feels like it comes from your asshole.

So I take some Nyquil thinking it is just my allergies. Well, tonight, I have some of the same wine. I'm fine all day, but after a few drinks of this wine, I start coughing. Same shit as last night. Then it hit me. It must be this wine. It's the only commonality.

The thing is, I drink this kind of wine all the time. It is a basic Chianti table wine. Cheap shit, but I like a room temp red that won't cost me much.

ANyone else ever have this shit? I mean, every time I inhale, I have to follow it with a cough that sends pains down my shoulders into my arms. I quit drinking whiskey which was my drink of choice. Maybe that's just it. My body is going into whiskey shock.

Fuck. I don't know. It hurts though. Off to get some Nyquil so I can sleep tonight.

I was drinking beer beforehand, but I can only have so many beers before I'm sick of beer. Like I said, I used to have a few beers and then I'd go to whiskey. Never been a problem. Had a few beers and started drinking some wine. I only had about 6 oz. wine before I started the coughing thing again.

Maybe it is just a coincidence. Maybe it is my allergies only acting up at night. When I sit upright, I'm ok. When I lay down, there is a cough for every inhale...a cough that hurts.

One thing is for sure, no more of this fucking wine. Can't wait for the Nyquil to kick in. I was told not to come to bed if I am going to be coughing.

Thanks hon. Love you too.

Up to a third of people with asthma complain that wine will worsen their asthma, less often with beer or spirits. Beer, wine and champagne contain sulphites (additive 220-226), used as a preservative since Roman times. Some people, particularly those with unstable or poorly controlled asthma, may wheeze when they consume these drinks. In general, there is more preservative in white wine than red wine, and more in cask wine than bottled wine. The amount of metabisulphite also varies from brand to brand. Some "low sulphite" wines are available, although those with extreme sensitivity may not be able to tolerate them. This is because some grape growers will dust sulphur powder over grapes in the weeks leading up to harvest. Other sources of sulphites include vinegar, pickled onions, dried fruit, or when dusted onto crustaceans and some restaurant salads or fruit salads. Sometimes grapes are transported with bags of sulphites to keep them fresh. Even when people complain that wine triggers asthma, sulphites may not be the only explanation.
Google man. But then again when I google stuff about medicine, my neurotic nature comes out and everything I have is terminal, even tendonitis in my wrist or a torn pec from lifting.

Good luck

Sorry to hear about that.

Favorite thing about bar crawling are the douches (usually your guys' ages) that roll up at last call, wasted, and proceed to buy everyone a round. I almost (and by almost I mean always) let these dorks by me a shot of tequila, or whiskey, or a beer. Then I intentionally ignore every drunken golf tip they try and give me, slam the drink, and walk out with my buds whilst making fun of them. Also, I picture this very guy being Dinsdale.

Mgo, not sure what that has to do with the topic. I had a couple beers at 5:00. Then I had a glass of wine at 8:30. As soon as I had the wine, I went into this coughing thing. I'm not shit-faced at all.

Or you were just looking to take a shot at Dins...

It sounds like an allergic reaction.

Me neither, man.

Logic and alcohol were never very good friends.

AP,

Yes, it does. However, I made it a point to say I drink this wine all the time. Same brand. Same type. Never had a problem.

Like I said though, over the past 10 days, my allergies have been kicking my ass. Wake up every morening sounding like that bass guy in the fucking Oakridge Boys band. Cough up about 10 oysters right away. Take a shower and all is fine except a scratchy throat. Then, the hell starts all over in the morning. It's jsut the last two nights where this coughing thing showed up and the only thing I can think of is the wine.

Your body is reacting to something added to the equation. I've seen a few people from my work have similar symptoms to what you've described and they are asthmatic as well. One showed up with an inhaler today and he's 60 years old.

With this heat wave, just drink lots of water and not the sugary sports drinks that are nothing but sugars that will sit in your digestive system and not go into the cells that need it quickly, and rest as much as you can.

That's just one of many suggestions, but I think mine is a good one... besides seeing a doctor if this shit keeps up.

That was funny!!

Patient: Hey Doc, It hurts when I move my arm like this!
Doc: Well don't move your arm like that!

(substitute "I cough uncontrollably and violently when I drink this red wine" and replace the Doctor's response to "Well don't drink that wine! "and you are that joke!!

*******************************
"Doctor, I can't stop behaving like a dog."
"How long have you been acting this way?"
"Since I was a puppy!"

*************************************

Okay but seriously..

I am guessing allergy. Allergy to something in the wine.

Although alcohol can be the culprit, it usually is not. The culprits are usually the additives used in the manufacturing process. Some of the possible culprits include:
Brewers yeast
Corn
Eggs
Grapes
Molds
Sulfites - Highly Likely!!
Pesticides

My suggestion, switch wines and see if the problem continues..(It wouldn't hurt to have an Epi -Pen handy!!

*******************************************
A cough is the sound made when the cough reflex suddenly expels air and secretions from the lungs.

coughing spasm is longer than 5 minutes of continuous coughing.
Causes
Most are part of a cold, a viral infection of the large airway (viral bronchitis).
Other common causes: croup, bronchiolitis, asthma, allergic cough.

Do you bring anything up? (Sputum or phlegm?) If so, it is probably not an allergy!

Sputum or Phlegm
Yellow or green phlegm is a normal part of the healing process of viral bronchitis.
This means the lining of the trachea was damaged by the viral infection and is being coughed up as new mucosa replaces it.

My other suggestion is...Stay away from the thing that makes you cough and that red wine seems to be the problem!

Might want to find a new website there, Jack.

But, many people have adverse reactions to the sulfites. Seems to be the most common complaint with wine, anyway. Try a low-sulfite wine...they're out there.

Yes, Brewer's yeast can be used to make wine.

Well, I didn't have anything to drink yesterday and same shit. Getting into the evening I start coughing. I'm fine all day but after dinner and getting ready for bed it begins. Cough cough and cough some more. Took my Nyquil and finally went to sleep an hour later.

It would make more sense to me if it happened all day, but it only happens at night. Guess it is time to go see the doctor. I'm pretty sure amoxycilian will be prescribed and it will not help.

Thanks for the replies though.

Oh dear.

Gee, when I go by the winery I occasionally do work for this afternoon, I'll make sure and tell the winemaker that he should throw away that selection of wine yeasts he stocks, and also tell him that 5 years spent getting that enology degree at UCD was all a waste...he should have just googled the info and strated sending out resumes.

You call that stuff "homemade wine"...others who know what they're talking about call that stuff you made out a fruit juice, sugar, and brewers yeast...we call that "crap that makes you crap."

Tossing a bunch of stuff together and fermenting it when you don't know what you're doing is a good way to get sick, though. Maybe while you've got your "search engine of expertise" fired up, you can do a search for "anaphylactic shock."

No, dumbass -- no wine you buy in a bottle, be it Two Buck Chuck or Opus One, is made using brewers yeast. That would be an excellent way to make a very bad tasting wine.

The f*cking wine that he is drinking is sending him into uncontrollable coughing spells..

He says and I quote
I got into such a coughing frenzy. I could hardly breathe without coughing right after. And not a *oohooh* cough. One that feels like it comes from your asshole.

Do you think he is possible drinking $100/bottle wine???
NO!

You say crap that makes you crap.. He says after drinking he has a cough coming from his asshole... Unless he is talking about you... He is talking about cheap wine, asshole.

and my advice... stay away!!

You're an idiot.

First, before you posted this, IF has eliminated the wine as the source of his coughing.

Second, not sure if you caught the part where I said "no wine you buy in a bottle, be it Two Buck Chuck or Opus One, is made using brewers yeast."

Doesn't matter if it costs $2.50, or $500...it wasn't made with fucking brewers yeast. Despite what Google may have told you.

Here's the deal...I know A LOT more about this subject than you do. This FACT has been more than cemented in this thread.

Shut the fuck up.

My grandfather used to own a couple of bars here in KC and when he passed away my mom got a lot of the stuff that nobody thought was worth a crap (this was in 78).

Needless to say, we have some of the coolest Hamm's beer stuff in the bar downstairs and I still have his watch with the little bear on it.

When I'm not up north at the lake, I can still get a glimpse of the water as it rolls by on my Hamm's Scene-a-rama sign.

It's mounted on my bedroom wall.

I'm not sure which part of "I occasionally work at a winery" you didn't catch.

Is that really that hard to believe? I would think that since you believe everything you read on Google, the word "gullible" is tattooed across your forehead.

And you're actually trying to pull this crap after you tried to sound all fucking smart by googling shit? The accuse ME of "reading a book?"

You really are fucking retarded, aren't you, dickweed?

If you'll remember how this got started, it was because you were cocksure that some ragged website was telling you the truth when it told you wine was made with "brewers yeast"(you would thing the "brewers" part would have keyed you in, moron), which I quickly and correctly pointed out wasn't the case.

And now you're trying to accuse ME of "reading a book?"
