I think I have a new favorite course

Post by Ken »

Well... maybe. La Purisima is still #1 in my book and until I play Pebble or Augusta, will prolly remain so.

Anyways, had the pleasure of playing Poppy Hills this weekend. Wow, what a place. Just amazing. The greens were so receptive and rolled so true. The fairways... well, were also spectacular. The staff wasn't overbearing either. I thought it would be too 'resort-ish' for lack of better terms. No way... just the way I like it. No one to superficially wipe your clubs after the round... level-headed starter... nice pro shop with nice employees... a guy who gruffly said to us from the clubhouse as we waited on our carts behind the 18th for our 2nd group to come in, "Hey guys, we need those carts." Kind of a prick, but a breath of fresh air at a place as nice as this to be truthful. A BBQ cookin' up some burgers and such outside the clubhouse at the turn.

Here's the obligatory pic of #1 from the tee. Hard dogleg right, par 5.

Of course, I put a nasty slice on my 3 wood only to never find the ball again in the trees on the right. Played a provisional to the perfect spot (figures), then played a nice layup... right into one of the deepest divots I've ever had the displeasure of being in (figures). You know.. one of those divots that when you look at it, you look around to see if there is also a broken shaft... or arm laying nearby. Mother fucker, I say to myself. However, I played the part of Jeff Ogelvie, final round, in the fairway, in a divot, hole 18 of the Open. Rack me, I nailed it and STILL got it to bite nicely to about 15 feet. 8)

Here's # 10. Par 5, dogleg left. Thought it was a nice pic, so I took it, dammit. Laying one, I was still about 230 out. Woulda had to put a fade or draw on it around the tree. Since I can't draw my fairway woods and I wouldn't be able to get it there with a fade, I laid up. I parred this hole.

#18. This shot is from behind the green.

Another par 5 that I parred. Drove it into the right rough then proceeded to hit one of the most pure 5 woods I've ever hit. I effed up my pitch big time and was at the rear of the green, putting downhill, breaking left from about 25 feet or so. From where I was, I was quite happy to two putt it... which I luckily did.

Not sure if it was excitement, adrenaline or whatever being that I was playing Poppy. All I know is that I sure as hell didn't hit the ball well. Shot a 48 on the front  Turned around, settled down, and shot a 39 on the back... this, on the toughest of the three courses at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am 8)

Poppy Hills is a great course.

I have played Spyglass and Pebble, and they equal that. Some of the greens have under the green hot water heating to keep the fucking fungus from growing in that ocean air.

Great tracts.... sounds like you had a good round. Enjoy..

I'd like to see scoring averages at the three courses, but I would think Poppy plays the easiest. Pebble is Pebble, but the toughest holes are at Spyglass IMHO.

Good round at Poppy though. Just curious but how many putts did you take at 1? You failed to mention your score there.

Your humble opinion pretty much sucked... at least as far as last year goes.

I two-putted.

Poppy Hills is one of my favorite courses to play on Tiger Woods Golf 2003. I'm jealous you got to play the actual course.
