Clock rule changes...WHY?

Penn State coach Joe Paterno brought out another perhaps unintended effect of the new rule.
"When you kick the ball, [the clock] starts. Kick it out of bounds with 8-10 seconds to go, the game's over," Paterno said to USA Today. "We've got to expose our kids to it in preseason practice."
Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville, who sits on the NCAA rules committee, tried to answer some of the criticisms offered by his colleagues.
"We weren't looking to take plays away from the game," Tuberville told USA Today. "We were looking to … get away from some of these 3-hour, 45-minute games in hot weather or cold weather. This is obviously an experiment. Anything we do in the rules committee can be changed next year."
I get it...they're joking, right?

If it ain't broke, dont fix it. I have no problem w/ long college football games. It's the greatest thing on tv and in person.

Total BS.

This is going to really alter the way games end. Is there some fucking hurry? What's the difference between 3.5 hours and 3.75 hours?
This opens the door for all kinds of foot-dragging bullshit to run out clocks. If they think that's a good way to end close games...well, they must be gluttons for punishment...

Come to think of it...this might be a good thing for PSU. Paterno loves to sit on whatever lead his team has...10 points or 2 points. This propensity has cost him some games in recent years. Maybe now he'll allow the offense to keep coming with everything they have...

What about the clock starting after first downs now?

Yep...that was something I liked about CFB, that a drive could be bootstrapped together on the basis of gaining first downs. They might go...~gasp~ 25 minutes without ads.
Looks like they're hell-bent on selling the game out.

PSU,
Not to pile on JoPa, but dude really is not with it. Either he doesn't understand the rules at all or he is just losing it. The sad thing is I really think he doesn't know the rules, and not just the new ones.
Say for example PSU just scored to go ahead and there is 10 seconds left in the game. JoPa seems to think he could end the game by just kicking the ball out of bounds. However, if he did, there would be a penalty against PSU for the kick out of bounds. Even if time ran out on the kick, the receiving team would still get a play by accepting the foul. They could have PSU rekick, or they could take the ball at the spot of the foul plus 5 yards and have an untimed down.
The new rule has no effect on this play. Sadly, JoPa is missing the whole penalty. Sad, very sad.

Note on 8-9-06, Lefty makes his first rules clarrification of the season :D

This is beyond stupid.
Why is the NCAA trying to be the NFL?

By October this will be forgotten.

Maybe he meant if the kicker booted one through the end zone.

Not seeing the situational picture, say PSU is down to FuKu because the scored a TD on PSU in the last 10 secs, just say that it is a tie game and FuKu onsides the ball and kicks it out of bounds. Rather than PSU getting the extra yardage and the expired time, they only get the yardage and no extra time. Overtime new ball game.
Of course I could be ignorant of other certain rules, I just think people in the NCAA are getting paid for doing nothing and have to show that they are doing something so they continue to fuck things up.

The next time it takes 10 seconds to boot a ball through the endzone will be the first.

I believe that's what he meant.
Anyway, I hope it shortens the game for them.

That is true, but what if there was 4 seconds left, or less?

If that happens to aTm, then I'd love to see if you have the same feeling about not having the chance for one last play.
The whole premise of the clock starting on the kick to speed up games is ridiculous. They will already accomplish that by starting the clock on first downs.

Mucho,
As long as the same rule applies to both teams on the field, I won't have a problem with it.
That's what I don't get about people's reactions to rules and rule changes. It's not as if the rule will only go into effect for YOUR team. It is the same for ALL teams. Most likely, ALL teams will be equally affected by this rule change, good or bad.
And one more thing...the demand for a big leg for kickoff duties just got higher.

Oh, and this rule means this is even better news. This kid has a launching pad for a leg.

At 6-2, 195 pounds, Szymanski is rated the #1 Kicker/Punter in the Nation by Chris Sailer Kicking and he has worked with former Dallas Cowboys placekicker Chris Boniol.
“Matt is one of the best to come along in years,” Sailer said. “He is simply the full package. He can kick field goals, kickoff, and punt at the highest level. He is the #1 combination player in the Class of 2007. Texas A&M truly has something special.”

Fair enough Indy, but for a game to end that way, instead of a team trying to run a kickoff back for a score, is ridiculous.

No more ridiculous than a squib kick that hits a lineman in the chest and he flops around to fall on the ball as the time runs out.
No more ridiculous than taking a knee and watching the clock tick.
If anything, this promotes a more exciting finish. Not every kicker can kick the ball 70 yards out of bounds. What will be exciting is that instead of a squib kick (as described above), the better athlete, the kick returner, will most likely get a chance to return the ball.
Look at the percentage of kicks that are touchbacks nowadays. And I guarantee you, EVERY kicker tries to get a touchback if he can. The number is extremely low. If there is that much heartburn about it, moving the kicker back 5 yards fro kickoffs will all but eliminate touchbacks sans those with major tailwinds.

Even if he doesn't enroll by the Fall, he will be an Aggie next year. Allhis life he's wanted to be an Aggie. I'm not worried about him going elsewhere. Knowing we have a top notch kicker for the next 4 or 5 years is good news to all Ags. The kicking game in college has gotten so bad. Nice to have this stud coming in.

Mo, anytime the kicking team kicks a ball and it goes out of bounds on the sidelines, there is a foul. THe receiving team can take the ball at the spot plus 5 yards, they can have the kicking team rekick minus 5 yards, or they can take the ball 30 yards in advance of where it was kicked. But in all of those there will be another play.

Oh, and one other thing just so everyone knows. The coaches are the ones who make the rules. The college coaches wanted this and they got it.
