4-2-5 Defense
Ok, so I’m not a deep down X’s and O’s kind of guy. The highest level of football I’ve played was freshman year in high school. I know the rules pretty well. I can recognize formations and such.
However, I’ve never really heard f the 4-2-5 defense. Is this the same thing as what is called the nickel package?
The reason I ask is because A&M is implementing the 4-2-5 as their base package this year. Since we were “ranked” 117 out of 117 last year in passing defense, this is our knee jerk reaction. If this IS the nickel package, wouldn’t it be safe to say that we will most likely be giving up 200 yards/game rushing? I mean, come on, you can’t line up with 5 DBs every play and expect to get many 3 and outs unless you have the ’85 Bears DL and LBs.
Anyone else you know of that runs this 4-2-5 a majority of the time? Anyone seen it used with success as a majority of the defensive schemes? I would think not.

I can see why OU would have done that too. They had such a high powered offense that by putting in a nickel package most of the time, the other team is running clock. While OU was on offense, they had a lot of quick strike scores.
Our offense, however, will be a lot of option style runs this year. I'm just a little worried that our defense is going to be tired as fuck by halftime and our DBs will have the VAST majority of the tackles. Having DBs lead the team in tackles means SHITTY defensive line and LB play.

in 2001, OU was VERY conservative and only somewhat effective on O playing mostly not to lose/Nate Hybl not make mistakes--on the strength of the D. Calmus played in 01.

agree about the O-Line. watching then frosh Vince Carter just repeatedly get whipped by Nebraska's DL was pretty painful--and the beating Hybl took against K-State back when Snyder brought the heat (ans semi-late hits) on every play was hard to watch. and, obviously, he re-dislocates his shoulder the next week against texas when White comes in to finish the only O score of the game. to Carter's credit, he didn't make a bad exchange all day despite the abuse he was taking in Lincoln.Believe the Heupel wrote:Thanks-I thought he did, but I wasn't completely sure.
Just think how good that team would have been had the O-line been just one year more experienced...
Hell, the only losses that team had were on two pretty amazing individual plays. Still losses though. Dammit.

anyway, on the subject of the 4-2-5. CU played the 4-2-5 under Barney for the last year or two of the worst DC i've ever seen in person, Vince Okruch. they were pretty bad but did beat Tech and Kingsbury. also, CU ran a kind of umbrella 4-2-5 against OU, Leach, and Heupel with success in 99. but otherwise they were pretty mediocre on D. Carson Palmer ate them up in one of the biggest all-around asskickings i've ever seen. SC converted a 4th and 17 or 20 or something on their first drive for a TD. After Barney *finally* fired Okruch, Mike Hankwitz was the DC for his last two years at CU.
K-State ran a similar dropback "nickel" and make a quick strike/big play OU team sustain drives (which OU did not do) in the Big XII championship game that KSU won in 03.

Give me a break. Nebraska 95 was the best team in college football history88 wrote:Only schools that recruit players with small hands who can't eat fucking steak play a 4-2-5. and jammed their barbed-wire cock into every opponent's ass on their
way to the greatest and most dominating national championship game of all time.
Nebraska 95 was so loaded with Cornfed studs that they could run an 0-0-11 or a
11-0-00 and it wouldn't matter. They could all run like Tommy Frazier even though they
weighed 300+. In fact I think they ran an 0-0-11 against the four best running offenses that
season and held them to -349 yards on the ground. Plus ten picks and three defensive
touchdowns.
If you're not Nebraska 95 you are a wimpy pussy faggot.

When Greg Robinson came to Texas he put in the base 4-2-5 defense because we didn't have the outside linebackers that could play the strong side position. since then we brought in some big time safeties and converted them to strong side linebackers. So last year we run the 4-3 but with 5 DBs on the field. Drew Kelson is still a safety but he now plays the strong side linebacker and will cover the runningback and TE.
