Distinct evidence our society is in a downward spiral

My oldest child is 5 years old and started kindergarten this past Monday. I was pleased when I visited the school prior to that day and met with her teacher and also that the school is nice neighborhood immediately near a major military base. The result of that proximity meaning the school is fairly well funded compared to the average public school. Being responsible parents we attended parent/teacher night last night and man, it was not what I expected. I am not submitting myself for parent of the year in this rant but the shit I saw with other parents and their kids left me wondering if home schooling might be a better option. First of all, being that it was parent/teacher night, we left the kids with the ladies parents while we attended. I would say about 75% of the crowd of about 60 parents brought at least 1-3 gradeschool aged kids with them. During the opening session of the meeting there was a forum where the principal spoke to all the parents as a group. Even with the microphone this lady couldn't compete with the din created not only by the kids in the audtorium but their fucking PARENTS as well. At one point the prinicpal asked nicely for any folks who had two adults with them to have one take their children outside so she could continue with her presentation. That request was met with a very brief decrease in noise and general 'who me?' stare from a majority of the crowd. Not a soul left. A minute and a half later the noise level had returned to a point that I could barely her the principal and I wasn't more than 10-15 feet from her. The kids were running up and down the aisles playing, yelling and doing whatever they wanted to do as their parents ignored them. There was even one child of about 3-4 years old wearing no shoes, no shirt and was filthy from the waist up. I was ready to split some wigs for fucking sure.
The second part of the meeting was split up into small groups of parents meeting in the classrooms with their child's teacher. Surprise surprise myself and the lady were the only parents who stayed to talk with our daughter's teacher in the second session. I asked the lady if this was common behavior for what she had experienced in her career so far. She said that she has been teaching kindergarten for ten years and that even in that short a time she has seen a sharp degradation of parental involvement and their attentiveness to the kids who she has taught. The principal joined us for awhile and added that in her 16 years that the type of behavior from children AND their parents has gone from where it could be expected that there would be at least a minimal level of common decency and respect amongst most parties to a basic 'anything goes' state which it is today. The teacher added in that this year was the first time when she had questioned if she was going to continue teaching because of the bahavior of many of the kids and parents. This is some serious shit people. We as a society are making ourselves a big, fat and sloppy target for a beatdown by ingraining our self-absorbed, irreverant and accountability-free approach into our future generations. I am still at a loss.

I tabbed the paragraphs over when I wrote them but whatever softwear this site runs off of fixed that for me to what you see now when the thread was submitted.

It's a good post, Th, despite the lack of paragraphs.
But the behavior of us adults on this board is evidence enough that 'our society is in a downward spiral,' isn't it .... ?
Yeah.
Money, programs, policies ..... isn't curing the ill that Th described.

I am no conservative but you wonder about our future if nothing can actually be done to correct this trend. I know you can't legislate accountability but WTF?

The situation is destined to get much much worse.
You ain't seen nothin' yet.
Buckle your seatbelt.
If it ever is to be reversed, and that is in much doubt, it will take time.
Talkin' generations.

Bullshit.
A parent is responsible for their child until it turns 18.
Kid fucks up -- parent sits in jail.
Problem solved.

Something could be done, but it would hurt the economy.

If a parent was allowed to spank their child without having to sit in jail afterwards, this would be a moot discussion.

Gee, I wonder if that doesn't have anything to do with deployments to Iraq?

Spanking USED to be a good thing, but as Th described, adults are not acting like adults any more.
Why should they be allowed to spank anyone ... ?
Who gets to spank the 'adults' ... ?

I wouldn't call it a downward spiral.
More like a straight free-fall.

I've had a similar, though maybe not as glaring, experience the past few years at our HS.
For three years we've been going to "back to school" night, usually a few weeks into the school year. This year's hasn't happened yet. First everybody gathers in the "barn" (the old gym) where the Principal gives a welcome speech and introduces the administration, department heads, ASB President, etc. Then we all go on a quick walk through of our kids' schedule and meet the teachers in the classrooms.
Every year they announce that the welcome presentation will be in the gym at 6:30 pm. Being the anal retentive geeks that we are we always show up at least 15 minutes early so we can park and get a seat. The we sit there for at least 35 or 40 minutes while all the other parents wander in, at least 30% to 50% from 15 to 20 minutes late. The Principal doesn't even attempt to get started until at least 6:50.
Here's my beef. If you that announce an event will start at 6:30 you should start it at 6:30. If you're going to an event that is supposed to start at 6:30 you shouldn't be wandering in at 6:45. I've got better things to do than sit my aging ass on a hard wooden bench for an hour. This is a school ferkreistsake. What kind of example does this give the kids if, by not even turning the mike on until 20 minutes late, you're telling them that it's OK not to be on time?
We have a new Principal this year. I'll reserve judgement until then.

Mikey,
They should have the cheerleaders grind it out real slow for those twenty minutes while the tardy losers wander in. They'll be slappin' ass and drivin' it home doggy style (cuz that's the way Fitty Cent likes it), as the standard cheer routines just don't get it anymore.
Dins,
If you go around slapping your red headed mvscal's, who's gonna empty your overstuffed colostomy bag when you're as old as Luther? Not them. They're gonna tie knots in that heftysack, and sit back and watch while blowing smokerings in your face.

Coming from you that is rich.
I was playing you, bitch. You read things too literally. Just because someone offers a solution to a problem does not mean they feel that is the ONLY problem that needs resolution.
In my initial post about spanking, I was referring more along the lines that now kids are allowed to run the home. ONE of the reasons is that parents are not allowed to spank their children. I got spanked as a kid. It worked for me. It worked for my brother. It worked for my cousins. Kids don't fear anything nowadays.

TH, the best you can do is keep your level of responsibility up as you appear to have. You can't worry about the other dumb asses out there.
One of the main things the teachers want to see is active parental involvement with their kids and their classes. I've gotten to know all of my kids teachers over the years and talk with them/greet them on almost a daily basis (I walk the kids to school in the mornings) so I always know what is up in the classrooms and any problems/issues that arise are dealt with immediately. Almost every teacher at the end of the year has commented to me and my wife that they appreciated our active involvement.
Yes, I spank my kids when they act like little shitheads.

If you and I have gotten to the point of "I could kick your ass" smack, we must have covered pretty much every other topic. RACK!
But btw-all those years I spent doing Judo/BJJ, we used to absolutely LOVE it when the military guys showed up...high comedy, right there.
One day, we had the pleasure of sending the "advanced novices" up against some dude who taught hand-to-hand in the Marines for 20 years...funny stuff. Absolute fucking SCHOOLING.
Because if Uncle Sam taught you something...well, you know...
Although in that guy's defense, he knew more about weapons defenses in close quarters than everybody else I've met
put together. Which I suppose would be a better skill for a Marine that being able to wrassle....probably a good thing for this guy. Absolutely feeble hand-to-hand technique...but at least he was the INSTRUCTOR.
Military unarmed hand-to-hand is a complete fucking joke. Hope that's not the skills you were going to rely on...that would make for a quicky.

I see your comprehension is a little off today. I don't believe that I made that claim anywhere in my post, though I do believe that might be a place to start.

Now, is the lady pictured below the one we’re talking about? When you first shared this photo of you and your sister earlier this year, you indicated you would never get married. How many little bastards do you two have together?
