Raiders sign Jeff George

National Football League News Wire

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders signed Jeff George to a contract Monday, bringing back a player who hasn't thrown an NFL pass in five seasons.

George, the No. 1 overall pick by Indianapolis in 1990, joined the team in time for Monday's afternoon practice. He previously played for the Raiders in 1997-98, starting 23 games and throwing 33 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

It is not immediately clear what his role will be on the Raiders, who already have Aaron Brooks, Andrew Walter and Marques Tuiasosopo on the roster.

George played with the Colts from 1990-93. He was in Atlanta from 1994-96, then spent two seasons with Oakland and one with Minnesota before joining the Redskins in 2000, first as a backup. He was signed by Seattle as insurance midway through the 2002 season, but didn't play. Chicago signed him late in the 2004 season, but he never played for the Bears either.

George, known for his strong arm and clashes with coaches, has a 46-78 career record as a starter and has never lasted longer than four years with any one of them.

George hasn't played since 2001, when he was cut after two games with the Redskins. In his last two games with Washington, George had a quarterback rating of 34.6, completing 23 of 42 passes with three interceptions.

In his next-to-last game with Washington, he and coach Marty Schottenheimer had an animated sideline discussion after George committed four turnovers and was removed from the game.

George also had a sideline argument with coach June Jones when he was with the Atlanta Falcons in 1996, and the team suspended him and then cut him.

George played well his first season in Oakland, throwing for 3,917 yards and 29 touchdowns in 1997. He struggled with injuries the following season, starting only seven games, and was replaced the following season by Rich Gannon, who was a better fit in coach Jon Gruden's West Coast offense.

More news out of Oakland where Al Davis, in an effort to bring back the glory days of Raider lore
has just signed Fred Biletnikoff and Jim Plunkett to incentive laden one year deals

What this signing screams to me is that Tui is on his way out of Oakland.

As well he should be.

Face it Tui has had his opportunities and hasn't grabbed the spotlight. He has done nothing whatsoever over the last two season to even justify a roster spot.

Like it or not Jeff George is a better fit for this offense. I'm more comfortable with a dude who hasn't thrown a regular season pass in years than with our former 2nd round QB.

What does that tell you?

At least George will be able to air out some deep balls for Moss if God forbid he has to play at some point this season.

Tui most likely will wind up bringing coffee to Gruden in Tampa Bay.

19-0 bitches.

Didn't do anything in his CFB career to justify it, either, save for provide good leadership/cheerleading skills, provide a ticket-selling name, and throw it to a really really killer reciever who could make my grandmother look like an All-American passer.

Vince Evans' line must have been busy.

In other news, wasn't George the guy that scored a ten on the Wonderlic?

Somewhere, Vince Young is smiling.

Everybody knows Tuiosointerception is in over his head, what this signing means to me are two things.
Walter's injury is more severe than the RaiDuh's are letting on, and AL would never bring back Carrie Collins and admit he was wrong in letting him go.

As bad as Collins was last year, his performance will "seem good" in comparison to whatever Jeff George will do.

Well? Will he?

Yeah, I caught that dumbass remark too and I don't know if it was meant to be facetious, but neither of the other dorks in that booth took the bait.

The only person happier than JG about this development is his personal luggage carrier and shoe shine boy, Jason Whitlock. I can hear him already waxing ghetto poetic about how is homeboy got over. Fatass has been banging the drum in KC for years that the Chiefs need to sign Jeff George to add that final piece to the puzzle.

What a joke.

Al doesn't have a choice. Collins signed a deal with the Titans today.

Fuck all the lame smack about the even more lame, old duh qb's that turned this pathetic gig down. The better question is how many legitimate qb candidates turned down this horse shit job, for a once proud, now horse shit organization.

Teams rotate players in and out all the time for insurance, and its never an issue. This story is a non-issue.

What's up with this signing ... ?

I see 3 possibilities.

A. Walter's wing is dinged up. This would be VERY troubling, if true. But I hear that Walter practiced on Monday, said he is fine, and is expecting to play v. Seattle.

B. Tui is on his way out. Possibly to be packaged with Porter and sent off ... ?

C. It's just one of the WIERD Raider signings that come around every so often. Al knows that this pre-season has been the big snooze and he wanted to do something to stir some laughs.

So which is it ... ?

I think it's most likely B.
Tui is going to be sent, and J. George will take over the important clipboard holding duty.

Laugh, as we know you will, at the signing, but if B is correct, and Oakland gets something in return for Tui, then replacing him with George is a good move.

If A is correct I will cry.

If C is correct I just smile, shake my head, and move on down the road.

This is probably the most realistic answer.

Sign Jeff George to replace a 3rd stringer who would never make it on the field if Walter was healthy? Doubtful....
C. It's just one of the WIERD Raider signings that come around every so often. Al knows that this pre-season has been the big snooze and he wanted to do something to stir some laughs.
Yeah, kinda like signing a Bed & Breakfast manager to be your offensive coordinator... :D

...a couple of snippets from my favorite source..

The Saints also acquired quarterback Drew Brees who is a marked upgrade over Aaron Brooks. Of course, the Raiders thought that the quarterback who wasn’t good enough to beat out Todd Bouman for playing time would be a great addition at the position.

If the Panthers were injury prone before when they were on steroids then now, as they are trying to play clean, they will probably get so far down the depth chart they will be reaching for guys like Jeff George. Just kidding, nobody would be that desperate.

..ah yes, Alice and Raiduh Nation all giddy over their preseason success. It will all come crashing down when the Bolts defense rolls into the Moseleum (their are several ways to spell this, and this might be one of them) on Sept. 11th. (no I won't be there and neither will my lid). Brooks running for his life, George warming up on the sidelines, Arthur standing monolithic playboard in hand, and Alice chugging Vicodin and hiding from the camera that keeps trying to get a shot of him.

Good luck.

No doubt he is quivering in fear of that "ferocious" Raider "defense".

Has anyone had the heart to mention to Al that it isn't 1995 anymore?
Wasn't 1995 the last time the Chargers were even in a Super Bowl?

A,B and C.

The only way this makes any sense is if Walter is temporarily unavailable, Tui is gone, and they are worried about Brooks performing like... Brooks.

Okay, it stil doesn't make that much sense.

The way it was spun yesterday on the Raider broadcast was that Randy Moss was working with Jeff George during the off season and asked the Raiders to take a look at him. So George can become our 3rd string.......who's 3rd string is better in the league? I still think Al is just a crazy fucker and Tui is another bust draft pick (imagine that).

Anyway preseason is over at Raider camp and our season starts next Monday night vs. the red headed step child of the AFC West. Fuck the Dolts and fuck every single Charger fan who reads this!

GO RAIDERS mother fuckers!

Phillip Leaf will begin his transformation into Ryan II after johnstone and burgess smash his ass in between him throwing 2 picks to Huff and Washington.

Jordan rushes for 110 and catches for another 30 while scoring twice. Brooks, Moss, and Co. go wild on those piles of shit Douchenheimer refers to as "DB's" in thier pathetic secondary.

NOT so fast my friend...

Quick out: Raiders cut newly acquired QB GeorgeESPN.com news services

Less than a week after signing quarterback Jeff George, who hasn't thrown an NFL pass in five years, the Oakland Raiders cut the former No. 1 overall pick.

But the release of George might not necessarily end his comeback attempt and, in fact, may have simply been a procedural move by the Raiders, aimed at not having to guarantee his full salary. Because George is a "vested" veteran, with more than four seasons in the league, the collective bargaining agreement stipulates that his entire base salary is guaranteed if he is on the opening dau roster. By cutting him now, the Raiders avoid that guarantee, of $810,000, and can re-sign George after the opening game. If that happened, and he were released for a second time, Oakland would owe George just the prorated share of his base salary, not the full $810,000. Notable is that the Raiders on Saturday also released veteran backup Marques Tuiasosopo, leaving them with just two quarterbacks, starter Aaron Brooks and second-year backup Andrew Walter, on the roster. That might suggest the Raiders plan to add another quarterback, perhaps by re-signing George.

George, 38, played with the Colts from 1990-93. He was in Atlanta from 1994-96, then spent two seasons with Oakland and one with Minnesota before joining the Redskins in 2000. He was signed by Seattle as insurance midway through the 2002 season, but didn't play. Chicago signed him late in 2004, but he never played for the Bears either.

George, known for his rifle arm and clashes with coaches, has a 46-78 career record as a starter and has never lasted longer than four years with any team. He has thrown for 27,602 yards, with 154 touchdowns and 113 interceptions in his career.

No harm in bringing him in.
