College football discusses regional, national refs pools

Creating regional pools or a national pool of college football game officials, which would remove their conference labels and therefore the perception they are biased, is perhaps an idea whose time has come, some league officials say.

NCAA Division I-A conference commissioners discussed that possibility at their fall meeting Tuesday in Chicago, said Rick Chryst, chairman of the Conference Commissioners Association. He characterized those talks as "an extension" of previous discussions. "I sense a strong seriousness about assessing our current environment," said Chryst, the Mid-American Conference commissioner. He said no specifics were discussed.

The environment is highly charged this week. Monday the Pacific-10 issued a one-game suspension to the officiating crew and instant replay officials who worked Oregon's 34-33, final-seconds win against Oklahoma at home Saturday. Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen said "errors were clearly made and not corrected."

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said Tuesday that the Sooners would consider canceling their game at Washington in 2008 if the Pac-10 does not change a league policy that requires its officials be used at games at Pac-10 school stadiums. Pac-10 spokesman Jim Muldoon said "because of all the controversy," the policy probably will be on the agenda when league athletics directors meet next month.

As for regional or a national pool of referees, Muldoon said, "We would be interested in exploring it."

Any new system would have to be approved by the conference commissioners, who oversee Division I-A football. "There should be a national discussion" about pooling referees, Big 12 Commissioner Kevin Weiberg said. "Conference affiliation can sometimes create an unfair perception of their work." Big East associate commissioner Nick Carparelli said his conference "has always been in favor of moving toward some type of national officiating program."

Big Ten officials supervisor Dave Parry supports the idea. Tommy Hunt, supervisor of football officials for the Atlantic Coast Conference, said he would favor a national program but warns that staffing and training could be unwieldy and adds, "I don't think it's going to happen."
