Rice freshman defensive back Dale Lloyd, a 2006 graduate of Lamar High School, died this morning after collapsing during a workout Sunday afternoon.

The cause of death has not been determined.

Lloyd, 19, played in the Owls' season opener against Houston, and was a member of first-year coach Todd Graham's initial recruiting class.

Lloyd was a two-time All-District 21-5A selection at Lamar and a three-year letterman. He also earned all-district honors as an outfielder for the Redskins baseball team and was elected to Who's Who Among American High School Students.

School officials have scheduled a 1:30 p.m. news conference to release more information.

Drive-by shooting, or did a balloon of heroin burst in his colon?

Hate to hear about that. Probably a pretty smart guy.

Prayers to his family and may Cuda experience the pain of losing a loved one.

I'll love Cuda if we can all lose him. That'd be swell.

Rice is a program like the academies, the kids that go there are students first, and this young man is no excpetion.

I am truely heart broken for him and his family.

Yeah, really sad when this broke this morning. I actually met the guy this summer at an alumni function. Here's hoping that sad situations like this can lead to future improved diagnosis of whatever took his life.

Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and the current team. I don't have an opinion on Saturday's game, but if they do play this could be a thing that brings the team together.
