The Canes need immediate help on defense and Johnson is still at least one more year away from playing in the NHL. Gleason had a breakout year last season...a nice pickup. They also needed a second or third line center since they lost Cullen and traded away Vasicek to acquire Walker...Belanger is a nice addition to fill that spot. The Canes arguably have the best forward lineup in the league after they fill that extra center position. The Kings get a cornerstone defenseman in Johnson and at least Tverdovsky is a decent stopgap option. He's making quite a bit of money though...nice salary dump by the Canes from that standpoint.

To LA
Jack Johnson $0
Oleg Tverdovsky $ 2.5 mil (UFA 08)
Total: $2.5 mil ($5 mil over 2 years)

To Carolina
Tim Gleason $ 1.75 mil (RFA 08)
Eric Belanger $ 1.3 mil (UFA 07)
Total: $3.14 mil ($4.8 mil over 2 years)

How exactly is this a salary dump????

Carolina got screwed!!

We RAPED the Whalercanes!

Yes, the Kings are going to miss Ebel's faceoff ability, but with young players like Kopitar and O'Sullivan coming in, his place was gone.

Kevin Dallman's excellent training camp cemented a spot on the team, making Gleason expendable in the right trade.

From Jack Johnson's profile at the U of M....

CHILDHOOD DREAM: To Win an NCAA Championship
FAVORITE PLAYER/IDOL GROWING UP: Rob Blake

Carolina didn't like him playing in college, the Kings can be patient with him.

I don't understand this trade at all. Why couldn't Carolina wait? Was Gleason really the best that they could get for Johnson? Is Gleason that good? Has Johnson's stock dropped that far?

Fran Kaberle is hurt...they're thin on defense. It is a desperate move but they didn't seem to be shy from trading Johnson...it's been publicized for quite a while. Prospects are just that, prospects...although from what I've seen watching Michigan games, he could be a special player.

AQ, thoughts?

it's pretty fucking incredible the canes dealt away jack johnson, you have to be all fucking sorts of stupid to deal away a potential franchise cornerstone defenseman just because "you need help now" and he wants to stay at scU-M another year.

hard to believe of all people that jim rutherford actually won a cup. dude leave his head in the fucking toilet of the locker room after game 7? idiot.

and yes, the queens absolutely looted the canes in this deal.

This Johnson as a franchise defenseman talk should have ended after teh WJC. He is a good prospect but he is not a franchise guy.

I think the Canes lost the deal but it is nowhere near as bad as people seem to be making it out to be.

And what is up with a dude that wants to win a NCAA championship over a Stanley Cup.

It is college hockey, not a decent league like CHL or NHL. I think you could skip the frozen four to help a team win the STanley CUp and come out on top.

Winning that fugly plaque the NCAA gives out....oh joy. My bet is on him joining the Kings after the college season is over. The chance to play with his idol is too good to pass up.

And he's a prospect with an infuriatingly controlling father (think Carl Lindros without the big mouth).

Mind you, I have always been on the fence as far as the kid's concerned, because of the discipline issues that he has. I look at this deal as a "time will tell" sort of thing. If Johnson winds up getting into the NHL and turning out to be a bonehead, then the 'Canes will have "won" the trade as far as I'm concerned because they won't have him and his dad as a distraction.

They got rid of one player making 2 and a half bills a year to sit on the bench (when he wasn't being a defensive headache). That's how it's a salary dump.

Somehow, I do not think so. But like I said earlier, we'll just have to wait and see.....

...how Lombardi likes Jack Sr. telling him whether or not he can talk to his kid, and when the kid will sign. That's what Rutherford had to deal with here. When Rutherford had dinner with the kid, his dad sat out in the car. Every other time the team has tried to contact Jack Jr. directly, they've had to go through his father--who very clearly was calling the shots, and who decided whether or not his son would talk to the Hurricanes.

That was the real catalyst for the trade. There's no denying the kid's skillz, there's no denying his potential to be a franchise defenseman, but dealing with his dad was a freaking nightmare.

Just sayin'.

That's what I meant to say...thank you for the backup on that. Tverdovsky was an insignificant part of their championship last year and they move his big salary to get two players that can help them now and play every night. The Canes win that part of the deal. The Jack Johnson factor will be the ultimate determination over who wins the trade. Johnson has the potential to be a top-flight defenseman. Until it happens, he's just a name. The Canes picked up two NHL players who fill holes for them...from that sense, I like the trade for them. It would've been something though to see that trio of youngsters...Staal up front, Johnson on the blueline and Ward in net...be the building blocks for that team. Lombardi has the makings of a good young team in L.A. I don't expect them to be too much of a factor this year but they'll be back in the playoffs very soon.

E.Johnson>>>>>J.Johnson

canes deal a prospect for immediate help, gleason is still very young, and nhl ready. johnson was a tad overrated, he would of been the 2nd dman taken if he came out in this past years draft.

canes get a win now deal.
