Was that the same cueball head (ex) fireman that's been singing at Yankme Stadium since 9/11/2001?
I'm really tired of that shit. Bring back Take Me Out to the Ballgame or GFY.

No, I do not. I'm more than sick of this shit. THEN the gay ass guvment had to go ahead and "hide" that internet gambling bill in with something else so that it would pass...well, the PrimeX has had enough. Republicans are now dead to me. I want my Take Me Out To The Ballgame and FREEDOM TO WASTE MY MONEY HOW I LIKE!
Fuck, Bill Frist should get the AIDS and Texas should secede.

It's a Yankee Stadium tradition...I think it's kind of cool. The guy is goofy looking but his voice is incredible. His version of the song is only rivaled by Kate Smith's that used to be performed at Flyers' games in the 70s. I think they still do "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" in the 7th inning stretch over there...they've just kept this other tradition since 2001. They need to stop doing the guest conductors at Wrigley...that's becoming a joke. Play a recording of Harry and be done with it.

Tradition? Since 2001?
The Yankmes/Highlanders have been in NY since 1903 and the House that Ruth Built since 1923.
Pinstripes are a tradition.
You may want to rethink your statement.
At least they should give equal time to "This Land is Your Land".

Another question.
Have they been doing this all season, or is it another FOX TV moment?
Robert Merrill singing the National Anthem in Yankee Stadium during the World Series was cool, but if this is just another ratings ploy, then double fuck it.

Woody Guthrie's Socialist response to Irving Berlin's attempt at hiding his shameful lifestyle? Heresy!
In the squares of the city - In the shadow of the steeple
Near the relief office - I see my people
And some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'
If this land's still made for you and me.
See that Woody Guthrie documentary on PBS? Good stuff.

Try disabled opera singer. You need to go back to the football forum, you obviously know nothing about baseball.
Ronan Tynan, M.D. (born 1960 in Dublin, Ireland) is a popular tenor, singing in the classical Irish style. He is most famous for his renditions of God Bless America performed at Yankee Stadium during important New York Yankee games, such as Opening Day, nationally-televised games, and playoff games. Additionally he has sung for Buffalo Sabres during their hockey games. He is also known for participating in the 1984 Olympics.
Tynan, until recently, was a member of the Irish Tenors. He left to pursue his own solo career in May of 2004.
[edit]
Background
Born with lower limb disabilities, Tynan had to have both legs amputated at the age of 20 due to complications caused by a car accident. Within weeks of the accident, he was climbing stairs at his college dormitory on artificial legs. Within a year, Tynan was winning in the international disabled olympics. Between 1981 and 1984, he amassed eighteen gold medals and fourteen world records.
In the following years, Tynan became the first disabled person ever admitted to the National College of Physical Education, Limerick. He went on to prestigious Trinity College, Dublin and became a physician specializing in Orthopedic Sports Injuries.
Encouraged to also study voice by his father, Tynan won a series of prestigious voice competition awards and joined the Irish Tenors.

You probably don't even know who Robert Merrill was.
What kind of a Yankme fan are you anway? You'd best get back to the TROTS forum where you're more at home.

How so?
God Bless America is sang to honor America...that's what the anthem at the begining of the game is for. How is it different? Not every city has kept the 'God Bless America' during the 7th inning stretch from 2001. Given that NYC was the center of 9-11 and that "tradition" started during the 2001 postseason when it was used as an extra boost of patriotism in a dark time...just months after the attack. Whether they keep doing this beyond this year and after isn't a big deal to me but I wouldn't start a thread in this message board to raise a complaint about it. It's not hurting anyone and it's done with respect and class...let it be.

How is it different?
Without insulting your intelligence, I'll give you a few reasons off the top of my head.
1. It's not the National Anthem, and it never will approach the National Anthem in terms of historic importance
2. It's not sung before the game
3. It's not a "tradition"
4. It's stuck in at the 7th inning stretch, where it obviously does not belong, only for the TV audience
5. Just because it's not "hurting anyone" doesn't mean it belongs
6. They can do whatever TF they want, but it's still bullshit.
7. Why don't we just have Kermit the Frog sing "It's Not Easy Being Green" between the 4th and 5th innings. That would be a cool "tradition" and it wouldn't hurt anybody either. Then maybe we could add a Donna Summer impersonator in each and every city singing "Hot Stuff" after the 5th.

Many consider "God Bless America" a better patriotic song and should've been or should eventually become the national anthem. The current anthem is just a poem about the flag put to music. I don't think any other song would've been chosen to be done in that 7th inning stretch slot other than something patriotic. In 2001, all teams adopted the song in addition to "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" after they returned to play after the week or so off after 9-11. It was appropriate and well accepted by everyone. To use the "It Ain't Easy Being Green" comparison is silly...the song has patriotic significance and since New York was the center of all of that and they've felt like continuing the custom and they have done so. MLB chose a song that would raise the spirits of those attending games all over the country following the terrorist attack. By the way, where's the law that says "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" has to be sung after the top of the 7th? Someone had to start that before it became a tradition much like singing "God Bless America" at Yankee Stadium has become a new tradition in on itself. If you don't like what they do at their ballpark...that's your choice. Write them a letter and tell them to stop doing it if bothers you so much. If not, just change the channel the next time TV is about to show it. I'm sure the people with Yankees chose to continue doing it just to annoy people like you.

You are kidding right? The Star Spangled Banner is a much better song/poem.
Isn't the break between innings supposed to be 2 minutes? Seems like God Bless America takes that guy 5 minutes to complete. Automatic mute.

Many consider Toby Keith to be high art but thank fucking God those types are content to eat paste and drink themselves to death.
It was appropriate and well accepted by everyone.
Good to see you're paying attention. Nobody I know sang along with it.
the song has patriotic significance
to those who like the song. I hate mixing religion and patriotism, and thusly I think the song is crap. I also don't think much of those who like the song.
By the way, where's the law that says "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" has to be sung after the top of the 7th?
Its written right next to "boo the guy in the opposing team's jersey" and above "sushi should not be served at baseball stadiums".

Bizzarofelice,
I missed the show on Woody Guthrie... but to me.. he is a Great American!
-- He could have been a commercial success but as he said..
"I got disgusted with the whole sissified and nervous rules of censorship on all my songs and ballads, and drove off down the road across the southern states again." (Woody Guthrie)
***********
I prefer Take Me out to the Ball Game for the 7th inning. It is a fun beer drinking song that can also be song by anyone with a smile on their face.
God Bless America is an excellent Patriotic song but IMO it is too serious for a baseball game.
just Picture someone sing Take Me Out to the Ball Game
and
now
Picture some singing God Bless America.
Who has the Bigger Smile?
******************
That is one reason, I prefer "Sweet Caroline" at a Red Sox game. It is like an old time Bar room song that every sings with a smile on their face.
Sports should be fun and not preachy!
IMO!

Wow.....I never thought anyone would be offended by, of all things "God Bless America." Maybe "Allah Bless Al Queda" better? Is that religion more palatable?
Seriously, Tynan started singing that at the games following 9/11. Not a dry eye in the house. Tradition? Sure. Once there was a Year #5 of Harry singing "Take Me Out...." but it grew and grew. Some traditions are just older than others.

Classic.
One of New York's proudest sons is your inspiration...awesome.
Boston's fine, the snow falls most the time
And the feeling is "way back"(1918)
Big mouths blow, IQ's are low
But you know they keep thinking about
Making their way back
Babe in New York City earned his praise
Bambino treated Sux like his whores
Said "Boston's fine, but it ain't home,"
"New York's home, and Boston don't win no more"
"You bitch" Babe said
To those in Red
And no one heard at all
Not even Ted Williams head

How about no religion, tard. Baseball has nothing to do with God. God has nothing to do with God. Its all a construct designed to give structure to the weak. Fuck you, weakling tard.

Ah, so that's why FOX is showing it. I really didn't understand why they were running it when they weren't making any money off of it.
If they're using it as a chance to promote their fall schedule, it makes a lot more sense.
The only time FOX showed the seventh inning stretch during the Cubs run in 2003 was when Bernie Mac sang it.

So, God Bless America. Twice.
No National Anthem. No Take Me Out To the Ballgame.
Fuck you Detroit. You absolutely suck.
I thought my beer mug was going to shatter on the last note during the 7th but that no talent poser couldn't even hit the note.
Bob Seger couldn't hit a single note during the entire fucking song.

I went to Game 1 and they did 'Take Me Out to the Ballgame' after 'God Bless America'...just because they didn't show it on TV, doesn't mean it didn't happen. Seger sang 'America, The Beautiful' by the way...not to let facts get in the way though.

Yeah it wasn't Segar who sang God Bless America during the 7th inning stretch either.
That was some country fuck who failed out of American Idol.
Detroit, as much as it pains me, has always done God Bless America on Sundays. Also, the TV didn't show it, but they did sing Take me out to the ballgame once FOX went to commercial.
But maybe you could be more wrong with your post.

Yeah, whatever. Still no national anthem before game 1, and that wasn't Sunday, BTW. Sorry but I'm a traditionalist. I can't see taking off my hat and standing for America the Beautiful, much less John Mellencamp singing a Chevy commercial. What a fucking embarassment that was. At least they did have the NA before the second game.
Maybe FOX is to blame more than Detroit but why are they showing some C&W loser singing God Bless America anyway? This is supposed to be baseball, not American fuckin Bandstand or let's see if the old-timer can carry a tune day. Sure the network has to have their commercials, but let's keep them to the commercial breaks, OK?

They also like to strategically place stars of their shows in the crowd at the games as well. They had a dude from Prison Break at the game yesterday. Fox is just as big of a whore network as the rest. They'll give us the game but they've got to sprinkle in their own brand of bullshit.

God Bless America is sung to remind us to be unified in this time of war,no matter our differences,we are Americans and this is the greatest country on earth. The war supercedes a baseball game, end of discussion.
