It's a long time til signing day and things can change but right now he sure looks like he is firm in his commitment.

QB says he'll stay true to Texas

Like any other dedicated Texas Longhorns fan, John Brantley has watched and admired the swift development of UT quarterback Colt McCoy.
"He's had a really strong season," Brantley said. "He gets better every week."

Brantley's interest in the redshirt freshman and the Longhorns isn't limited to Saturdays in front of the television.

He also happens to be one of the best high school senior quarterbacks in the country, a polished, pro-style passer who caused a major stir in his home state of Florida when he committed to UT last spring.

At the time, Vince Young had declared for the NFL draft and the Longhorns' quarterback reserves were stocked with unproven freshmen.

Exceeding all expectations, McCoy has since put a hammerlock on the starting job, giving UT's recruiting rivals ample ammunition with which to test Brantley's commitment.

While he can't sign his letter of intent until Feb. 7, Brantley said neither McCoy's ascent nor the persistence of other suitors have done anything to dissuade his plans.

"I've thought about it," Brantley said, "but not in a negative way. I know he's going to be there. I don't really want to play my freshman year, anyway. I want to get used to Austin, get used to the program, and whenever they call my number ..."

Which could be awhile considering McCoy's play.

And the competition at UT doesn't end with him. Talented freshmen Jevan Snead and Sherrod Harris also are on the depth chart, making Brantley's quest for playing time that much tougher.

"It's a hard decision to make," said Randy Rodgers, who scouts Texas high school players for more than 50 I-A schools. "Ultimately, (Brantley) has to decide if he's willing to hang around and wear a ball cap for three years. Or does he go somewhere he can play right away?"

Somewhere, for example, like Oklahoma.

Brantley's father, John Brantley III, said the Sooners, desperate to sign a replacement for dismissed starter Rhett Bomar, lead a pack of schools still in hot pursuit of his son.

Also refusing to quit is Florida, where John III and his brother Scot played in the 1970s. Kerwin Bell, Brantley's coach at Ocala Trinity Catholic High, played quarterback for the Gators and was the Southeastern Conference player of the year in 1984.

But for reasons the elder Brantley declined to discuss, he said his son has no interest in playing for Gators coach Urban Meyer.

The Sooners have been more difficult to rebuff. John III used to sell OU coach Bob Stoops insurance during his stint as a Florida assistant. Stoops also was one of the first to offer John a scholarship when he began turning heads as a freshman.

"I've tried to keep people away from John as much as I can," he said. "But Stoops was a client of mine, so I'll extend him the courtesy."

In contrast to Texas, Brantley would have a virtually uncontested shot at the starting job in Norman — a major reason rumors persist he'll eventually end up in crimson instead of burnt orange.

"He can go out there and start right away," his father said.

But even with the lure of guaranteed playing time, the younger Brantley said you shouldn't believe all you read on Internet message boards.

"There are lots of rumors flying around about me and OU, but none of them are true," said Brantley, who has thrown for 1,789 yards and 32 touchdowns in nine games this season.

"I'm still going to Texas."

That's the most invisible article I've ever not been able to read.

Ryan Perriloux seemed pretty firm in his commitment as well. ;)
The big difference is that Ryan was a publicity hound, and he was the guy who wanted to shock the world. Brantley is not in the same mold as RP. Besides RP looks like a dumbass sitting on the bench when if he came to Texas he would have been handed the offense on a silver platter. Brantley won't make the same mistake.

Brantley is going to be a damn good QB. I have respect for that kid b/c he knows he has two freshman studs ahead of him, yet he is willing to compete and wait his turn.

Nah, no booster involvement that I know of just a bunch of bulletin board fans talking about it non-stop. The good news for soonerfan is that with Texas locking up 5 QBs in the system you will pretty much have your pick of QBS in Texas for the next couple of years.

Mack is already working on the 2008 class so i like our chances.

Our biggest need in 2k8 are RB, WR, DB, and DT

I think Texas is going after Johnson as a linebacker more than a RB. The state has about 4 RBs that are top 100 material. Not sure right now who is leaning which way. I know that Texas has a few Gilmer guys in the system now and they are working Johnson over pretty good.

Creer is in a weird situation, he wanted to go to Texas pretty bad and we offered over the summer figuring he would leap at it, but he didn't so Texas gave him a deadline before we went after a few more backs.

Well he got put off and then dropped us. He even made some pretty nasty stuff about Texas after a visit to Tennessee. Now for some reason Texas still hasn't taken another back and now he is saying we are back in the picture. But I hear he is not in our picture. Who knows what is going on there.

It happens, these are 17 year old kids who from time to time will change their mind or have something else happen that may push them in one direction or another. Last year Penn State went crazy after Vidal Hazelton after he was commited to USC, they went through his step dad and tried to get him to convince Vidal, even going so far as not signing his LOI. This year theres a kid in Arkansas named Broderick Green who commited to USC in March of his 11th grade year. The Hog fans are hounding him like crazy to switch to Arkansas instead of USC.
And do you honestly think that Jimmy Claussen is still not getting letters and phone calls from schools not called Notre Dame?
If it was LOI day and they were trying to lock up his emails or persuade his parents to go against his wishes, say they're trying to snake a player, but a verbaled kid in October is a kid that they will continue to inform him that he is welcome to their team if he decides to change his mind.

If he does come to Texas I sure hope he knows how to throw 2 yard hitch routes and tunnel screens.

Even after removing my crimson-colored glasses, I still can't see why Brantley would go to Texas. As the article points out, its not just McCoy that he has to worry about. Snead was every bit as impressive as Tebow and Mustain in the all-star game / recruiting circuit. I can appreciate that Brantley is confident in his abilities and doesn't shy from the competition but its virtually impossible to unseat an incumbent, well-performing quarterback on a team that's winning consistently.

Of course, this is Mack Brown. Could we finally be seeing the first positive result from the Simms / Applewhite debacle?

Brantley wants to redshirt and take his time so he completely know the offesne before getting some playing time. Both Colt and Jevan will be juniors when he is a red-shirt freshmen. When they are both out of the system he will be a red-shirt junior and still have 2 years to make his mark as a starter.

And as BtH said, things can change pretty fast, I don't think there is any way Texas will keep every one of those guys, from what I understand the only ting holding Jevan back from taking the starting job from Colt is his knowledge of the playbook. The guy that I'm really excited to see is Sherrod Harris, I have heard his arm is as good as Jevans and he is twice the athlete. It is a good problem to have but it won't last We will have some guys transfer.

I personally think Brantley will be making other guys transfer not the one doing the transfer.

BtH - to continue our conversation on Johnson, the guy I'm hearing that Texas really wants at runningback is Jermie Calhoun who is said to be a 5-star runningback when rivals releases their rankings for the 2k8 class.

Neither do I, but I'll recruit them anyway... and then, when someone else puts them in the right places and wins with them, I'll take all the credit.

Boo

I sure wish WR James Kirkendoll out of Round Rock was on that Texas list. I think UT is the only Big 12 school not to offer the kid. The real kicker is his parents are good friends with UT Strength Coach Mad Dog Madden and has been invited to some drills before with VY and Roy Williams. He is a local stud and Texas is dragging their feet. I think he will probably wind up at Michigan.
