Hines Ward: Fastest man in the NFL?

I believe some players just have an extra gear when in the heat of battle. Combine production, 40 times, etc. are way overrated. That's why so many great players get drafted in the late rounds or not at all. Of course that's also why so many players are drafted high and flat out suck. Being a NFL scout would be tough. I would think consistent performance on the field against tough competition and adversity is the best measuring stick.

That was the backside pursuit by Jason Webster that allowed Hall to finaly close and forced Ward to stop and leap 3 yards in the other direction into the endzone. Before Webster got there, Ward was pulling away from Hall.

And he was trying to track down a guy with ONE SHOE.

I'll give you that he might have had an awkward first step. But Ward flat out beat him deep on a skinny post to begin with. In fact, working one on one with Ward all day, Hall got beaten like a mule by a guy he should have been able to cover like a glove. That is, if 40 times had anything to do with it.

Ward is a terrific player -- one who I wish was a Raiduh, but the fact is that he did not show himself to be faster than D. Hall on that play.

He may have shown himself to be a better football player -- just leave it at that.

They matter but obviously there is more to it. It's all about technique and reading routes and using your speed correctly. If you once again need reassurance that Ward is one of the best route runners in football then there, I said it. Are you that insecure about the Steelers that you need constant reassurance?

Not yet. He's 30 years old, so he's got about 7 years to realisicly produce. If he can get back to his 2002-03 levels of production for at least 4 of those years, then he's in. Otherwise, I doubt it.

I don't recall which of the three was Hall for that play. But I do remember someone finally catching up to Hines at about the 5-10 yd. line. I also remember someone closing on him at around the 30 then Hines changing his running angle and screwing up the defender.

Both had superior speed to Hines... Hines wa just a bit more elusive.

It doesn't matter. The HoF voters won't even let Henry Ellard and Art Monk in. My guess is that he'll get some run for the HoF if he gets over 950 catches, over 12,000 yards recieving and around 90-100 TDs. All of which are doable IF he can average 1000 yards a year, 80 receptions and 8-10 TDs a year for the next 4 years. If he doesn't, he won't compare well against his peers in the voting.

I know those aren't precise qualifiers, but usually the "game speed" guys make you pay on the stat sheet. Jerry Rice is a good example. Slow combine speed, insanely fast game speed, and he made you pay on the stat sheet when he had his 120 yards and 2 touchdowns.
