I voted for Lloyd Carr, he has carried meat chicken to #2 when no one thought they would be jack this year.

I voted for Greg Schiano...Michigan being unbeaten is surprising to most but it's not as improbable as Rutgers being unbeaten and a top 15 team. oyd doesn't deserve to get props until he beats Tressel. Tressel should get some votes but the Buckeyes are pretty much doing what everyone expected...even though they lost a ton of starters on defense.

I just voted for Karl Duhrell.

Ya' know, Red Auerbach only won one Coach O' The Year title during his championship run with the Celtics. That's a load of horseshit.

Coach Of The Year has obviously come to mean, "Head coach of the team that came out of nowhere to do pretty well". We see it go that way every year, in most every sport.

I say fuck that. It's time to go back to basics. It's time to give the award to the guy who's doing the best job, period, not the guy whose team achieved the most surprising turnaroud.

Jim Tressel is the COTY, so far. He's taken a team that simply couldn't win for shit under his predecessor and he's returned them not to some Mid Major's idea of glory but Ohio State's version of glory. He's done this using the same resources John Cooper had at his disposal when Ohio St (mostly) sank to the depths of irrelevancy. He's beating BIG teams in BIG games and he's beating Michigan and now he's even got OSU simply crushing fuckers most every time out.

Along with Petey down at USC Jim Tressel has completely reformed and transformed the landscape of CF. Rather than merely putting some one year wonder back to the middle Jim Tressel has put Ohio St all the way back on top.

The fact that he always comports himself with class and dignity doesn't hurt either.

Well Cooper ran off seasons starting in 93 of:

93 10-1-1
94 9-4
95 11-2
96 11-1 (won the Rose Bowl and finished #2 behind FLA)
97 10-2
98 11-1 (won the Sugar Bowl and finished #2 behind Tennessee)


so he had a great string in their Van so it's not like he had shitty teams and the guys who went pro - Glenn, George, Winfield, Boston, etc...granted 2-10-1 against Michigan was not good but he beat ND twice.

Now Tressel has done some great things (2002 MNC, 4-1 against scUM, and has won 4 straight bowl games) but he has had some clouds over the program - Clarett, et al...granted THIS year with what tOSU had to replace on D and Holmes they are playing (in my opinion) heads and shoulders above every other team but guys like Carr, Schiano, Grobe (at Wake) are all very serious contenders for this award as well as others I am forgetting...

I'm not about to lay any of the Maurice Clarett blame on Jim Tressell.

I just don't have any doubts about Tressell's integrity. People around him will still fuck up, sure. He's not a saint and neither are any of his players. Thing is, we just can't keep scapegoating coaches whenever their players become fuck ups. Most of the time it really is the player's own fault...and nobody else's.

Well under Van's thinking then there are only about 4 or 5 coaches that should win it every year. Tressel, Stoops, Mack Brown, Carrol, and Tubberville. Those are the most succesful coaches this decade.

I like that we measure how far a program has come in one season as the measuring stick for COY. Tressel hasn't done anything that a lot of other coaches couldn't have done with his talented senior layden squad. I'm impressed with his defensive performance but not his offensive performance. That offense is carrying that team.

Same with Mack Brown, Texas has a championship level of talent but no QB at the beginning of the year. Now they have a QB and championship level of talent..

Lloyd Carr has talent but hs not had a complete season in so long no one thought they would do anything this year. Well they have and he should get credit for it.

Even Schiano who has not played anyone deserves a little credit because he has taken a school on the level of Rice and made them a top 15 school. I don't think they really are and in a short period of time reality is going to bite thier asses but he has done a fabulous job.

Like I said I can appreciate it a little more when the difference from one year to the next is the job the coach has done.

Vito, under my way of thinking the best coach should at least win it once in a while. It shouldn't always go to the coach who inherited a bunch of seniors and a gawdawfully easy schedule.

So often we see COY out of a job within three years and it's precisely because his COY job was mostly the result of a particularly favorable set of circumstances as opposed to anything incredible he did as a coach.

It sorta stands to reason that part of what makes any given program the best every year is their coach and yeah, winning coaches shouldn't always get the shaft and become automatic victims of their own success.

Again, are you comfortable with the fact that guys like Auerbach and Wooden hardly ever won COY while a bunch of soon to be unemployed shlubs walked off with it nearly all the time? If you are, cool. I'm not.

Just go ahead and rename the thing, "Coach Of The Most Improved Team" and be done with it.

Rutgers should be a two-loss team this year, and I don't think that would suprise anyone with any knowledge of college football and any semblance of objectivity.

Having said that, that's still a quantum leap improvement over what Rutgers used to be. In the past, two win seasons were cause for celebration at Rutgers. Moreover, because of the change in the Big East landscape, he's in position to entrench the program at that level, perhaps even take it up another notch. There's a lot of high school talent in New Jersey, and Rutgers is the only 1-A program in state. Once the kids see that the program's competitive, he should have an easier time keeping more of them at home.

Isn't being a good recruiter part of what makes you a good coach? He brought in this "talented senior layden squad."

because with mack and his talent layden squads he has 1 b12 title and 1 bcs title. and a losing record vs ok. in what 10 yrs? in 5yrs tressel has 1 bcs title and 4 b10 titles. plus he is 4-1 against michigan..

My (biased) vote is for Coach Hep at IU. He has turned around the IU program and has them 1 win away from their first bowl appearance since 1993. He's doing this with a huge amount of freshmen and sophmore starters and key players. To further illustrate his value as coach, he missed two games for medical reasons. Those games both ended up losses to "powerhouse" schools UConn and 1-AA Southern Illinois. It should be noted that was the first loss EVER by a B10 team to a 1-AA school and NO team in HISTORY has lost to a 1-AA team the same year they went to a bowl. With Hep on the sidelines IU has only lost 2 games this year, to true powerhouse teams Wisconsin and Ohio State. Lots of coaches are doing good jobs this year but not only is Hep winning games he's changing the entire attitude and outlook of a football program at a basketball school. Simply put the guy doing the best job this year is Coach Hep.

outside of tressel, i think he's doing the best job in cfb. his team wasnt expected to fight for a sec title, let alone a sec title game bid. he has done a hell of a job with mcfadden and mustain, 2 young kids, who have had a great start to their careers.

As we stand right now, if any of the following were to win it, it'd be cool by me:

I voted for Bill Doba at Washington State. Nine wins + good bowl game is very possible. This was a four win team last year that at one point lost seven consecutive games. After they got routed by Arkansas to start the season, it could've gotten rough. They have played well, have a good signature win (Oregon), played well enough to beat USC and held Cal's offense to 21 points.
