scrit - I've got the feeling that they may be pretty compressed. In other words, if you're playing something that's got a lot of dynamics to it, or is simply quiet, you'll hear the difference.
Pretty cool, though. Wonder how long it'll take them to figure that one out......

They use wma, which sounds like crap even at higher bitrates. If you're really desperate for free music then it might be worth your time, but I wouldn't spend a cent for that crap. They need to start offering losslessly encoded music for a reasonable price.

point taken,seems like the guy who did that is in need of therapy....
i certainly wouldn't try that unless i was hard up for tuneage. i did get the 30 day trial for Napster,which is not bad...doesn't buffer as much as Real Rhapsody.

My brother is a systems admin for a college that offers Napster to its students. It is basicly a way for colleges to both get the RIAA off their backs and to regulate the load file sharing systems place on their servers. In other words, Napster has gone from the rebel at the gates to an extortion tool of the corporate system in the short period of 5 years, a transformation that would have impressed even the pigs on Orwell's Animal Farm.
What does that mean? That means that it behooves Napster to play nice with the campus networks. Ergo, your files will be smaller and definitely use lossy forms of compression. If you're an audiophile, I wouldn't bother. However, if you're just looking for some music to blast on your car's CD player, who the hell cares about lossy compression?
What the guy is proposing will definitely work. But there are probably also easier ways to manage the conversion than using a winamp plugin. Some of these are discussed here.
