Pick'em Games 2006 **And SOS on Lefty**

Ok, so you guys know how I tried to not do this this year. However, as always, I succumbed to the addiction of CFB. Anyhow, I definitely dropped the ball on the pick'em this year. I know. I WILL NOT commit to do it again. I swear.

That being said...

I PROMISE I will hold the Pick'em for the Bowl Season. This time....everyone gets in (88 is not required to donate football).

I SWEAR to have the lines up after the first bowl game or two. The first couple are SHIT games and I would rather have more precise lines on the remaining games.

One thing I'd like the board to ponder on...

I sent Lefty an email awhile back about his lack of sending me lines like he normally does for the pick'em. He never responded. I sent to his personal email account and in the past, his wife has responded to me that he was out of the country or what not for why he did not respond. If anyone has heard from Lefty in the last 2 weeks, let me know. His last post was on Oct 23. We had been in contact about meeting up for the A&M/NU game. He never responded to my emails. If anyone has his personal phone number, give him a holler and have him check back with me. I don't know why I think the worst, but Lefty is about as good a dude on these boards there is and it isn't like him to go AWOL like this. Any info would be good.

I give him a holla in the morning.

His schedule is pretty erratic, I am sure he is fine.

Sorry things could work out this year, Indy...you've done a great job with the game and I always look forward to playing each year.

I'll offer my services for the game next year but with this forum being a tight-knit community, it should be up to the posters to pick who they want to take over.

I think next year, Yahoo or some shit like that may be used. I really like our format. I'd hand the keys to my spreadsheet over to someone, but you gotta know the spreadsheet...it's jerry-rigged if you know what I mean.

I'm an Excel freak...I'd love to just see the spreadsheet, just out of curiousity.

As I've noted before, I am also an Excel/VBA magician. I would challenge anyone to a contest. If I can help, let me know. I'd like to see what you have Indy. Might be able to incorporate some macro wizardry.

PM me an addy Lance and I'll sned you the same thing I sent Shoalzie. I sent a diatribe explaining what it is I do. Prolly not the best, but it worked for me.

Geez, L45B is if even speaking over my head with using macros...I run the SNC using just a few simple formulas. I know enough to do my thing but I'm sure there are probably more effective ways to do the same thing with other formulas.

Well, I'm thinking my spreadsheet would be much better with some VLookups or something of that nature. Just never wanted to redesign it.

Sounds like this might be just a bit out of my reach.

Indy,

My thought is to eliminate as much data entry as possible. Do we have any pick'em threads available from prior weeks? (PSU?) I'd like to use the ole data dump method, whereby the host user goes to an odds website, copies all the games and lines, dumps the data into one tab. And then the same for all the picks on T1B. And then the same for all the scores once games are played (from a website). I can then create template tabs that pulls the data from all (vlookups & sumproducts & bullshit), and auto-calculates each posters' correct picks, percentages, etc. and stores all points from prior weeks in the same spreadsheet. That's my first thought anyways. Some of it might have to be manual. But the hardest part for me, will be finding a dependable website(s) that presents line/scores info in somewhat a consistent format from week to week.

I will now retire to the nerdery with my calculator.

I'd take a crack at it if I wasn't still at the office...

A lot of what Indy uses is what I use for the SNC or any other game. Since I'm a visual person, I always doll up my spreadsheets to make the information easy to read and to look good. If you're interested I can e-mail you my SNC spreadsheet and we can compare notes. I think my system is fairly simple and quick but I haven't dealt with the same number of games nor the number of participants the college game receives every week.

What makes the CFB one so pissy is the fact we will list liek 40-something games but only 10 are picked.

So what do the winners of the abbreviated pick'em this year have to show for their immense knowledge?

Yeah. Damn near the funniest thing I've ever seen. Someone else posted it first. I KCtrlPauled it.

I got a message from Lefty last night and he's fine. From what I could gather from a garbled message he was in a car accident and suffered some leg injuries. He then told me that he's been feeling a little down but his wife kicked him in the ass and told him to get it in gear. He sounded pretty high spirited and is doing ok...

Accident? Shit...glad to hear he's ok. Lefty is as solid as they come.

I have a suggestion if we're going to use Yahoo. When you set up the game, you can give someone the right to modify picks. Instead of picking all 20 games or however many there are, you tell the person to ONLY pick 10 like we always do. That way, we still sort of have it like the old way. Then Yahoo can go all the calculating and we can post the results on this board. What do you think? Hell, I can even do that if someone wants to.

I don't think there needs to be an overhaul of the game...just find someone who's able to put in the work each week to make it happen.

The Bucks are 7 point favorites? Damn, Vegas is begging for action on the Wolverines' side.
