I just don't understand why the playoff fate of the team matters in some instances but not others. Some years the rationale for a superior player losing the award is the team missing the playoffs (DLee) and some years it doesn't matter.

I'm not complaining at all. They both had kick ass seasons and 314 has bode either way. I do think Howard wasn't as valuable as Albert. Like last year with Andruw Jones, Howard's RISP batting average wasn't MVP caliber.

As for who voted Pujols 3rd, its the same guy who voted Beltran 2nd.

Can't argue you with you on this Bizz.. I honestly expected Pujols to win it. The only thing that probably hurt him was the way St. Louis almost blew the lead they had on Houston but it wasn't from a lack of production from Al.

Figures a NY writer would be a homer and vote in Beltran for 2nd when it was clear it was a 2 horse race between Howard and Pujols.

Howard kept the Phillies in the hunt after they had seemed to have given up on the season. Pujols will be an MVP candidate until he retires...he's that damn good. He'll get his fair share of awards before he's all through. I'm sure he'd rather keep his ring than trade it in for a second MVP.

It was close..

I can make a case for Morneau or Ortiz.

Derek Jeter had 14 Hrs, 97 RBI and a .343 average.
Justin Morneau had 34 HR, 130 RBI and a .321 average
David Ortiz had 54 Home runs, 137 RBI and a .287 average. He also had 14 walk off game winning hits.

I would have chosen Ortiz but I am biased!!

Just as Pujols kept the Cards going. In fact, the Phillies pitching, despite being in that silly park, had a better ERA than the Cards. And the hitters in front and behind of Howard had career years.

Even the GWRBI stat can be misleading because nobody on the Cards got RBI but Pujols. Howard had to share his wealth with Utley and Rollins.
