No, it's not surprising, particularly in light of the rumblings we've all been hearing all year. Having said that, while I'm no defender of Coker and certainly no defender of Miami's program, this was a guy who compiled a 53-9 record at Miami heading into this year. I know that coaching sports is, by its very nature, a "what have you done for me lately" type of business, and I realize Miami's program has been headed in the wrong direction for a few years. But I daresay there isn't another sport in which that sort of career winning percentage doesn't buy a coach the benefit of the doubt, and a little bit of time, when just one season goes to hell in a handbasket.

I also realize that there were other problems at Miami as well. But this is the institution that tolerated Howard Schnellenberger, Jimmy Johnson, and Dennis Erickson, at least while they were winning. And it is also the same progam whose "fans" (JSC excepted) take pride in their program's "Thug U" image. The idea that Miami has somehow suddenly developed a conscience doesn't pass the "straight face" test with me.

They're fine with being "Thug U"...provided they're winning big.

Funny though what a 6-6 record and no bowl game does to an administration's continued willingness to see their program defined as "Thug U"...

I think a few factors hurt him:

1. Butch Davis had really cleaned-up the program, Coker let them slide back into being Thug-U.

2. Coker won with Davis's guys, a totally ridiculous talent-level, as he got his recruits in the program kept going down hill.

3. Coker had already revamped the staff so hiring/firing of assistants wasn't the way to go.

Much of that is B.S. Coker engineered a death spiral preceded by a decevingly good record. As others have pointed out and is pretty well accepted... Coker won w/Butch's players. Right place at the right time. Even then, his win % was a facade. Coker's sole MNC year was a team not coached by him, but I contend by Dorsey and Reed. Those two were the heart and soul of the team, not Coker. The following year, McGahee bailed out Coker time after time. If it weren't for him, I contend Miami would have lost another game or two. I also remember a helluvua last minute, fourth and whatever catch by Shockey that bailed 'im out (vs. WVU?).

Miami's plunge into mediocrity happened more quickly than people realize. I also contend that the depths they have sunk to this year, including the lack of control (see fights), they're complete inability to muster an offense w/all that talent, and the eventual W-L record trumps ANYTHING Coker's done in the past 5-6 years. Miami fan should be very happy he's gone.

I think Coker has gotten a bad rap. One of my closest friends is a former DE and backup Long snapper at Thug U and is by no means a big fan of Kookier (as he refers to him) but he also recognizes that it wasn't Coker's coaching that has been the problem recntly at Miami but the level of talent as compared to the past. There are many factors for this and even the most staunch Slurricane fans out here, that I have talked to recognize...

1) Florida is more heavily recruited by out of state schools than ever before. The entire "Speed State" label has come back to haunt, not just Miami, but all three of the BIG 3 Florida schools. Ask Seminole Fan what the last few years have been like. All three are still VERY talented teams but not like they were in the 90's.

2) A decade ago there were 3 Div IA programs in Florida and three DIAA schools. Now there are 7 DIA programs and 5 of them are in Conferences that can easily, or are gurenteed, BCS bids.

3) The Panhandle/NW Florida/ Lower Alabama/The redneck riveria... thisd used to be the bastion of the Seminoles with a few Gators slipping out. Now both teams have to focus on central and southern Florida more than ever before. Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, and Georgia Tech have asserted themselves, over the last 5 years, as just as large of recruiting powers on the emerald Coast. Take a look at those four schools along with Tennessee, Mid Tennessee State, Ole Piss, Southern Piss and Piss State, rosters and just see how many kids are from Niceville, Fort Walton Beach, Crestview, Bonifay, Pennsacola, Milton, and Pace.

4) Miami's facilities are in disarray... period. They have the equipment but it is "older" and not as "shiny and pretty" as many other schools. The fact of the matter is that a couple of years ago my wife and I were helping a young man qualify for and select a University to attend. We went with him on a handful of unofficial and official visits because his mother was fighting (a battle she lost recently) with breast cancer. Mucho pay attention to this... The University of South Florida has nicer facilities and a nicxer stadium, closer to campus, than Thug U. does currently. I know... I saw it with my own eyes in less than a two week time span.

Would you offer this team a bowl bid if you were on Bowl "X's" committee?

Part of me says some minor bowl would love to have a high profile school like Miami in their bowl.

On the other hand, given their behavior over the last few years (well 20 years) would you risk it?

I don't know the figures but I would bet that Miami doesn't travel well. A minor bowl would be better served to give a bid to an up and coming program who will send many more students/fans to the game.

All irrelevant. The ACC has eight bowl tie-ins, and, with Virginia losing to Va Tech, exactly eight bowl-eligible teams. Miami has to go to a bowl, although given that they have six wins, it'll be to either the Emerald or, more likely, the MPC Computers Bowl, in which case they likely get the loser of the Boise State-Nevada game.
