Book Signing

Post by Smackie Chan »

The only time before tonight that I'd gone to a book signing was a few years ago when I was still working in radio, and Eric Burdon was signing copies of his book Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood. To be honest, the only reason I went was because he performed a few songs there at Borders, and I was looking to get some trim from one of the babes that worked at the station (mission accomplished). Other than that, the only other time I'd gotten an author to sign a book for me was when I was invited to visit John Wooden at his home, so that doesn't really count as a book signing.

But a few days ago, I was at the Borders around the corner from where I live, and saw a flyer announcing a book signing. So I figured wtf, and stood in line this evening to have the author sign his latest book, Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid. I'd never met a President before, and had read Our Endangered Values earlier this year (which I also had signed tonight). Of course, with the Secret Service there, I was only able to get about five feet away from Jimmy Carter, but he was pleasant enough, and looked up to greet those of us there to get his signature, until I told him that he should stop spoutin' off about Middle East policy until he gets expert advice on the subject from recognized authorities like mvscal and the other think tank analysts on T1B. He kindly told me to eat a dick, after which I was escorted out by those nice gentlemen in black suits.

Good times.

Why did John Wooden invite you to his home, and did he learn you on the Pyramid of Success ... ?

I wrote a letter to him (sent to UCLA) asking for an interview, and he wrote back with his address & phone number. I called him, and he told me to come over to his condo in Encino. I sat with him in his living room for about an hour on the Saturday in 2000 when Tiger Woods was running away from the pack during the British Open. Kareem had just gotten pinched with some weed, and we talked about that as well as Bill Walton, Paul Westphal (the recruit he most regretted having gotten away; he gave Wooden a verbal commitment, then signed with USC), the 2-3 offense, Abe Lincoln, Mother Teresa, current coaches (he believed Bill Self, then at Illinois, would become a top college coach), and a little about the Pyramid. Not a bad way to kill an hour.

Meeting and personally interviewing the Wizard of Westwood in the circumstances you describe equates to eternal BODE over anybody who hasn't accomplished the same with either Lincoln, Washington, Ghandi or Lombardi.

Word from the grapevine is that Smackie DID hook 'The Wizard' up, and he's been in-and-out of our community for many moons.

He currently posts here, btw.

Far be it for me to out'n'out OUT 'The' Wiz', so I'll just put it up as a multiple choice and let y'all make your own call on it.

John Wooden posts here as:

a) Uncle Fester

b) Ginsling.errr..

c) Diogenes

d) Y2K

e) socal

Not far from the troof -- I did get him to essentially admit that we are all Jim L0me & fliends. I mentioned that I'd heard the elf interview him a few times, and while he said he wasn't a big fan of the pimp in the box, he did say that Romey was a good interviewer. But when I tried to convince him to start posting at SCIII, he read a few posts from Wolfman, Luther, & Mace, then decided he'd be better suited frequenting a board with a younger crowd so he could interact with posters closer to his age.
