I need some feedback on after market automobile navigation systems. Girlfriend wants to get her parents one for X-mas as they travel every weekend. (No, this is not the asseater.)
I told her I would do some investigating. That's where you monkeys come into play.
Let T1B reviews begin...

We've got a Rudolph Rudolph instead of a Tom Tom. Worked pretty good on over 'Nam last year.

I have the Tom Tom Go 700 unit and love it. It's a little expensive at 7 large, but for me, it was well worth the price and has paid for itself. There are cheaper units out there that have fewer features but will get you from point A to B and back. Some phones offer GPS too, but I don't know about the quality of those.
Just remember when you hand them the Gps say "Merry Xmas, now get lost"

I've had it for a while, and that was the going rate at the time. They've come down quite a bit in the last year for sure because of the competition.
I bought it when it first came out. Worth every penny, for me.

You've saved 7 "large " in driving around lost gas?

No not just gas, but seeing as how I was buying thomas guides for various parts of the state every couple of years, plus the time savings (and gas) as well as being able to write the purchase of it off, yep. totally worth it.
Every trip I was able to shave a day off because I was more efficiently routed and got more work done per day (being able to instantly route around traffic jams and road construction is a major plus) means about $100 dollars saved in hotel and food costs per trip, and that happened on every trip. At least one day less per.
So yeah, it paid for itself and then some.

if you're a traveling sales monkey, write off the tom tom. I guess depreciate 1/5 this year.

Not a sales monkey, but I do travel quite a bit. The trip routing feature of this thing is nails.
It has some trouble in downtown SF and up in some of the more rural areas, but overall those problems are minimal.

Garmin Street pilot is best in class - Plan on spending around $400
You didn't mention it, but you might consider a handheld model -
