Even though everyone could see this coming, it's still a sad day for Chiefs fans. A classier man than Lamar Hunt you'd not find. It's just a shame that he was never handed the trophy that bears his name.

Ironic that Hunt was unable to watch the Chiefs play the Broncos on Thanksgiving Night because the hospital did not have the NFL Network.

Maybe because Hunt was the one pushing for a change in the Thanksgiving Day schedule since the merger and when it finally happened, he wasn't able to see it?

You mean, "the big game?" unless you are a sponsor of the NFL, you are legally obligated to refrain from using any verbage referring to this game that is known as the Super bowl.
sincerely,
NFL copyright and legal honks.

FYI.
Your ankle biting of BSmack is really getting annoying. Try mixing in a football take every now and again instead of swinging from Bri's nutsack.

Not ironic in the least.
Nor is the fact that, although he owned the KC

Amusing, but not ironic

Would you not say that it is both coincidental and contradictory for a man who fought for years against the league's policy of scheduling the same two home teams on Thanksgiving to be denied a chance to see the fruits of his efforts because of yet another exclusionary league policy?

Not true- his people had Dish Network installed in his hospital room when he was admitted there.
Not according to SI.
• Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt has lobbied for years for the right to host a Thanksgiving Day game, and when his franchise finally gets its long-awaited opportunity, he's in a Dallas hospital listening to the game by phone because the hospital didn't get the NFL Network? How much motivation than that does the league need to ensure that their fledgling network develops a wider audience than satellite dish owners and selected cable systems?

I love to Bri, but it's kinda hard to link the word of mouth of people I know that work at One Arrowhead Drive, and right about now I'll believe them before I believe some fish hack on the West Coast.
Then how about the Kansas City Star?
Hunt worked until the end, and was in his office on the afternoon of Nov. 21, the day before he was admitted to the hospital for the last time. He talked about his excitement of the Chiefs playing on Thanksgiving night. He didn’t know he’d be listening to that game over the phone.

But hey, let's branch a little bit. Any word from 1 Arrowhead on what happens to the Chiefs with Lamar gone? You guys aren't going to wind up with a megalomaniac like Dan Snyder running things are you?

Rack mvscal. Coming from an opposing AFC West fan, that means something. Thanks.
Btw, Paul. Lamar was born in El Dorado, AR not Dallas.
He also had to listen to the T-day game over a phone line that his daughter Norma held up to her TV. Why they couldn't have hooked him up with a laptop and simply downloaded the game over the internet is unfathomable. Lamar was a humble man and probably thought it would be too much trouble and not worth the fuss.

Why the fuck do you care what it means, Coods?
I appreciate the respect from the fans of opposing teams being shown to one of the founders of the AFL. You have an issue with that?
We here in KC gave an enormous amount of respect, admiration and appreciation for his accomplishments. You don't have to be a member of his family to understand that.
Well, maybe YOU do.

In an age of meddlesome owners, Lamar stood out as one who hired someone to do the job, then stood back and let him do it.
Probably his greatest flaw.
He let Jack Steadman turn the franchise to an also ran from the 70s through 1988. And now Carl Peterson is in year 18 of his 5 year plan.
Let's remember that Lamar was first and foremost a businessman. A Buisnessman that inherited his family's oil fortune. His vision in starting a rival league was bold - and profitable. His move of the Texans to KC was a business necessity - given their inability to compete with the Cowboys in the Dallas market. I'm sure he did many philanthropic things, though none come to mind. The bottom line, though, was his never ending concern for the bottom line. This was proven out during the last general election when the taxpayers of Jackson County voted to "subsidize" 400 million plus in stadium improvements for a stadium that has generated more profit for the Hunt family than can be easily calculated.
But I digress....... Perhaps Clarke will right the ship, and make the necessary front office moves to again make the Chiefs competitive. Perhaps a refurb of the stadium will lead to some economic development around that blighted area. Perhaps taxpayers will see a return on their investment.
RIP

Leave it to $coot to perceive that as his legacy. Quite expected coming from you, I guess.
Scott, there are some things that can't be measured in dollar signs and ROI.
Dude, when you're dead, I hope your kids don't remember you for how much money you left them.

I'm just putting it in perspective; He owned the Chiefs. And that's great, but the way I hear the talking heads gushing on, It's like we've lost a national treasure.
Yea, he started the AFL when the NFL wouldn't sell him a franchise. And that's great, But that's it. Lamar was born into enormous wealth. In 1982 his father and uncle tried to illegally corner the market on Silver - After Dad got popped and had a $58 Million judgement levied against him, he filed for bankruptcy. Of course he had transfered a good chunk of his wealth to Lamar before that judgement came down. Nothing wrong with that, I guess.
Answer this; Have you ever heard of any charities named for Hunt? how about the the wing of a hospital or burn center? Maybe even a school or just a scholarship or grant?
Me either.
Go Google Lamar Hunt and Philanthropy - I did and the only thing I could find was he donated money to SMU for their football Field. I dunno dave, seems like he made a lot, but didn't much back. Hard for me to want to build a statue for that.
If you want to see the contrast, take a look at what Ewing Kauffman did.

Ever heard the story about the guy who prayed in public vs. the guy who prayed in his closet?
That was Lamar. Teach 'em how to fish.
Maybe he didn't hand out $100 bills to the homeless, but his impact was waay more far reaching than Secret Santa.
Scott, even the most ardent Chiefs haters I know tip their hat to Mr. Hunt. How can you utter one word in disrespect towards this man?

Tards running amok in a RIP thread. Who'd a thunk it?
Scott basically dismissing Lamar? I wouldnt have even thunk that. Damn dude, thats a little out of line where I post from. This is the NFL forum, and I think you need to toss a little more credit Lamars way, just for that. Without Lamar ...... this little NFL thing we like to talk about would prolly look a whole lot different.
As far as the rest goes ..... Im no expert on Lamar. No one that posts here is. I met him 9 or 10 times. Worlds of Fun, Chiefs games, and at the Chiefs office downtown. He was always cordial. A decent, soft spoken man. He never acted like he was better than me, or anyone else that was around. He was just a guy.
Thats pretty much how I will remember him.

Simply... the best take in this thread!
Good job, Scott. It's good to see a Chief fan not blinded by stupidity. But, it is Missouri and Kansas we're talking about. Just like the "Wizard of Oz", the Chiefs make up the self-esteem and identity of many Midwestern folk, that have nothing else to root for in life.
Plain and simple... Hunt's refusal to do anything about "King Carl"... has cost the Chiefs and their fans, some very reasonable dreams.
