Alcohol question

Post by Atomic Punk »

I was reading through the nutrition tables in one of my medical books and it has certain types of alcohol like rum, etc. that has calories but no carbs, proteins, or fats. Yet beer has carbs. So how does a spirit like rum have none of the big 3?

BTW, I'm having a Bacardi and "Rock Star - Energy Drink" right now and am getting quite a good buzz off of very little rum in the mix. I'll prolly wake up on the hood of my truck nude tomorrow. How can something have calories and not show up in the carbs, fat, or protein side of the equation?

Alten Brown hasn't had that show yet.

I'm not a scientist, but I play one on the internet (to the extreme).

I believe when shit is distilled, it burns off the shit "in the carb range."

It's all empty calories, I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm sure that Dins has a more scientifically "correct" (or at least correct sounding) anwer but here's mine:

Hard liquor is pretty much just alcohol, water and various trace stuff that imparts a flavor. Everything else is removed via distillation and filtering. Even in rum, which is made from sugar, has all of the sugar converted to ethanol from the fermentation.

Beer on the other hand has a lot of other stuff. The grain that's used in brewing leaves a lot of carbs, presumably because it's not fermented to completion or distilled. The Germans consider beer to be the liquid equivalent of bread (and it's probably pretty close, at least theirs is).

Interesting. So you can get fucked up without putting on lbs then? I like drinking shit beer Keystone Lights as an activity and all, but this rum fucks me up on a half a bottle. If I can get fucked up and not deal with beer weight, then this might be the way to go.

edit: Well anyway, I guess it's just empty calories. Damn that shit got me fucked up last night.

Rum is distilled from sugarcane. There are calories, but it's essentially sugar, thus the "empty calories " tag. No nutritional value. It's only about 50 calories per 1 ounce shot

Whopper of a hangover, though.

Alcohol has plenty of calories. It's just not nutritionally considered a carbohydrate.

in that way rum is no different from any other major liquor.
