Oh, so many to chose from, but this morning's initial entry comes from KOTV, The "News" on 6.

Port Of Catoosa Director Says His Port Is Secure

Here's an incredibly mind-boggling case of trying to "localize" an incident at a real port.

Warning: This will be painful ...

Port Of Catoosa Director Says His Port Is Secure

Three people are arrested after a security scare at the Port of Miami. Security concerns in Florida made us question security at the Tulsa Port of Catoosa. The 2,000-acre Port of Catoosa is the largest inland ice-free port in the entire country. News on 6 reporter Chris Wright spoke with the director of the port on Sunday, Bob Portiss says his port is safe and is prepared for situation like the one that happened in Miami.

Portiss was disheartened by the incident in Miami, he says it shows that ports across the country, including his, are capable of dealing with all sorts of threats.

As the director of such a large port, security is always on the forefront of Portiss' mind.

"We are much more sensitive to these kind of issues, much more alert. I think we think about these kind of situations that might occur day in and day out," Port Director Bob Portiss said.

Portiss says communication is a crucial part of security, and asserts that the Port of Catoosa has made drastic improvements in that area over the past five years. The port is now part of a safety security council made up of local, state and federal agencies. Portiss says the council can respond immediately if there is a problem in Catoosa.

"In the event that something would occur, we are able to connect with them almost instantaneously," Portiss said.

The three men in Miami, Florida tried to slip past a security checkpoint in a cargo truck. Portiss believes if anyone attempted a similar stunt in Catoosa, they would have a difficult time getting past his security. There is only entrance into the port, and only pre-approved trucks are allowed in.

"A truck may not enter the port. It will be rejected, will be refused admittance unless it has been authorized in advance," said Portiss.

While the incident in Florida makes him nervous, he says it also an encouraging sign that security systems are detecting the threats they are supposed to detect.

"The systems, not only we have in place not only at our port, but ports across the country are working," Portiss said.

Portiss also tells us that a security drill was conducted at the Port of Catoosa in the past year, and everyone passed with flying colors.
--------------------

Meanwhile, here's what actually happened:

Miscommunication cited in port alert
The three men remained in local police custody for questioning, (Miami-Dade police spokeswoman Nancy) Goldberg said, but had not been arrested or charged by Sunday evening.

Nothing like doing a bullshit story with a ludicrous analogy, only to be wrong in the assumption.

Holy fuck, where to even begin ... this is why people get pissed off at the "news."

First of all, no one had been arrested.

Second, in typical local TV news fashion, it's all about us first, facts later.

And last, but definitely not least, let's take a look at the Port of Catoosa vs. the Port of Miami-Dade to see how this really turns into the truly sublime of idiocy. The Port of Catoosa, while kind of cute and cuddly because it's the nation's only "inland" port, has only the word "port" in common with the facility in the Miami area.

Let's put it in terms that TV news directors don't understand: The Port of Catoosa employs roughly 2,700 people.

The port of Miami-Date employs more than 98,000, you fucking, idiotic TV morons.

And any outsider would immediately be noticed because he'd never been to the family reunion.

I think inland might mean it is on a body of water that is not affected by tides. Nawlins is actually quite a few miles up the swamp, uhh, I mean river, but it is still affected by tides, particularly real bigass ones causes by cat 4/5 canes. That catoosa place is barely on a frickin' river, the R'kansas. Looks like they just dredged out the swamp a little.

Before I did the spectacular "edit instead of quote" job above, I clearly explained that "inland ports" are located on rivers that don't provide for deep draft ships.

There's a whole bunch of them in the country-btw.

Damn! Hard to hate on Dins when he's all humble... and right.

Yeah, I did a double take at that "only inland port" statement as well.

Rivers that don't provide for deep draft ships? They call that "barge traffic".

My only local news people story comes in the form of the local city basketball league game last year.

My somewhat older and fatter team went up against a team made up of the local metrosexual news team. They had nice hair and plucked eyebrows...and we eventually put an asswhoopin on them. But not before head newsboy drained a few three pointers in a row, thus he felt the need to pump his chest and say something to the effect of..."oh yea!BETTER put a man on me!"Well need less to say this middleaged farmer was the man that gaurded his ass from then on,even as he lay on the floor from some forearm work to the chest.Dumbass.

I see another channel has a team this year, hmmm, news boys on tv with stiches would be sort of fresh...

By far the most overhyped and idiotic story I've seen round these parts has to be the whole "J-Mac" story. Now, for those of you who don't watch the ESPYS, this mildly autistic high school basketball team manager was put in the last few minutes of a blowout game that happened to be the last regular season game of his senior year. The other team, even though they were being blown off the court, did the "right thing" and let this kid take a whole bunch of essentially uncontested 3 point shots and a few 15 footers as well.

But this is where it gets interesting. The kid MADE damn near everything he tossed at the basket. By the time the game was over, he had scored 20 points in about 4 minutes worth of action. The game ended with the home team fans storming the court and carrying him off the court as if he just hit the game winner.

OK, so far so good. It actually was an interesting story for a few days. They ran the video on the local news and wrote up some articles in the local paper and then all hell broke loose when the national media started to air the video from the game. Well, the next thing you know you can't go a fucking news cycle in Rochester without getting a "J-Mac" update. You have J-Mac meeting Dubya, J-Mac meeting Kobe and Magic, J-Mac meeting Hillary, J-Mac's graduation, J-Mac's upcoming movie deal, J-Mac plotting with Saddam to import yellowcake....

Well, you get the idea. It was getting to the point that you could have the Pope visit Rochester and he would have had to follow the daily J-Mac update on the local news.

Oh well, just check out the kid's Wikipedia entry. You know his dream is to become a department manager at the Wegmans bakery? :meds:

^ Good call...good for the kid and all but ESPN should get into the syrup business with all of the sappy stories they like the run on a continuous loop on SportsCenter.

The team experienced this media attention as the regular season ended and they prepared for the postseason, but McElwain continued to encourage them with his mantra: "Stay Focused". Greece Athena ended up winning the Class AA championship for Section V (the Rochester area), but lost the qualifying game against Class AA Fairport High School to move into the state tournament. J-Mac was seen giving the finger to the Fairport stands at the end of the game.
RACK J-Mac

Christ BSmack, I know you're trying hard to sound hard, but what the fuck is wrong with a brother working for a living ?

according to wikipepia an inland port is just that, a port that is inland as opposed to a seaport. It makes no reference to deep draft ability. It does say that inland ports can handle seagoing ships.

Problem with this definition is it would make places like chicago and detroit inland and I am pretty damn sure that those ports handle a little bit more than that dredged swamp in tulsa. So, I'm afraid I have to agree with dins on this one. I hate it when that happens.

Nothing wrong with him working at all. I just didn't need to get his career path updates on my local news.

What are you expecting when you tune-in to that drivel? Every time I watch a network TV program, there's always these scare tactic teasers like...

"Your children might be exposed to grave danger due to common household items in your cupboards. Tune in to Channel 7 News at 11:00 or your family will die."

... do you really watch that shit?

Not as much as I used to since we got the dish and can't get the 24 hour all local news channel. But on occasion, yes I do watch the local news. And yes, I always feel the need to shower after doing so.

I've replaced the 11:00 pm local news with The Daily Show, followed immediately by Colbert. A lot more interesting and 1000 times more relevant. Any local news I want or need I can get from the fishwrap.

Although I didn't cite a source(not that it would have mattered, since I botched the whole quote/edit thing...which I occasionally do....which kinda sucks huge ass when I do it in the Golf Forum, having the mod buttons....which is why I rarely quote anyone in the Golf Forum, and if I do, I check that shit about 50 times)...

anyhoo, it's not like I pulled that definition out of my ass -- I quoted it off a "inland port" report by the US Government...so yeah, pretty good chance I'm right.

And if you use Wiki as anything but a casual resource, to be taken with a grain of salt, then I've got some oceanfront property in Wyoming to sell you.

And to the topic at hand...

Well, there was this deal about missing Darwin candidates mountain climbers, and something about a chinksicle. You think the national attention was over the top? You ain't seen shit.

But over the last week or two, there's been like murders and crime and stuff, which precludes round-the-clock coverage of the adoption process for the pitbull puppy they found on a city bus.
