Latest playoff loss may mean lost job

SAN DIEGO | In the minutes we waited for Marty Schottenheimer to show up and explain his latest playoff failure, cameramen joked about Schottenheimer’s demise.
“He’ll be gone by Wednesday,” one man cracked.
“Maybe Monday,” another man chimed in.
Sunday afternoon, inside Qualcomm Stadium, Marty Schottenheimer cemented his reputation as a terrible postseason coach, blowing an 11-point second-quarter lead and an eight-point fourth-quarter lead and falling 24-21 to the New England Patriots.
Given his contentious relationship with Chargers general manager A.J. Smith, his 5-13 playoff record and contract situation (Marty has one year left on his deal), Schottenheimer, in all likelihood, lost his fourth head-coaching assignment on Sunday.
He lost it in grand style.
Rather than allow his Pro Bowl kicker to attempt a 48-yard field goal early in the first quarter, Schottenheimer instructed his offense to go for it on fourth and 11 at the New England 30. The Patriots sacked Philip Rivers for a loss of 5 yards and he fumbled.
“I thought we had a play we could use to make it,” Schottenheimer explained. “Our intention today was to be very aggressive.”
Marty might be the first coach in the history of football who knows a good play for fourth and 11 in the first quarter of a scoreless game. Marty’s intention was to prove that he’s not too conservative to win in the playoffs. His attempt to dispel that reputation made him look stupid. It’s inexcusable to turn down an opportunity to score first in a playoff game.
Marty has, by his own account, the best running back to ever play the game. The Patriots never stopped LaDainian Tomlinson on Sunday. He touched the ball 25 times and picked up 187 yards (123 on the ground and 64 on receptions) and two touchdowns.
Rather than ride LT to the AFC championship game, Schottenheimer placed the burden on Rivers, the first-year starter who faded late in the season. Rivers completed 14 of 32 passes and tossed one interception.
Rivers also talked Marty into wasting a timeout in the fourth quarter. Rivers raced along the sideline and excitedly encouraged Schottenheimer to challenge the referee’s ruling that Chargers safety Marlon McCree fumbled a would-be game-deciding interception. McCree clearly lost the ball before hitting the ground, and San Diego lost a timeout that they certainly could’ve used in the game’s final minute.
“The magnitude of the play was such,” Schottenheimer explained, “I felt the challenge was worth it.”
The Chargers wasted their second timeout with a little less than 4 minutes to play after a Rivers incompletion and after an injury timeout for a Patriots defender. Understand: The score was tied, the clock was stopped, the Chargers were trying to mount a drive and the Chargers had time to regroup because a New England defender was shaken.
Rivers called timeout as the play clock moved to 5 seconds. Why?
“There was some confusion about the play,” explained Schottenheimer, whose team desperately needed one more timeout on a final drive that ended with a 54-yard field goal attempt by Nate Kaeding.
Oh, there was plenty of confusion all day for the Chargers. McCree had no business trying to run after his interception. Had he fallen to the ground, New England’s game-tying TD drive would’ve fallen right with him.
The Chargers also were whistled for two foolish personal-foul penalties.
The first personal foul — committed by corner Drayton Florence — extended a New England scoring drive. The Chargers sacked Tom Brady on third-and-13, but Florence popped up off the ground in celebration and jumped head-first into the grill of a Patriot — yellow flag, 15 yards and automatic New England first down. The Patriots wound up kicking a 34-yard field goal and cutting San Diego’s lead to 14-13.
The Chargers answered back early in the fourth quarter, putting together a nine-play, 83-yard TD drive. San Diego right tackle Shane Olivea hit a Patriot after the whistle on the extra point, drawing a personal foul and surrendering 15 yards on the ensuing kickoff.
After a short 15-yard return, New England’s game-tying TD drive started on the 37 thanks to Olivea’s foolishness.
Does any of this sound familiar? The personal fouls? The weird decisions? The misuse of timeouts? It’s the same stuff that haunted Marty in Kansas City.
The Chargers enjoyed great field position for most of the game. LT destroyed the Patriots on first down running the ball, but the Chargers couldn’t take advantage and score points and put the Patriots away. Marty let Tom Brady hang around too long. Marty gave Brady too many opportunities to be John Elway.
All of it is probably going to cost Marty another job. He’s lost six straight playoff games. Once again he lost at home after compiling the league’s best regular-season record — the third time he’s managed that feat.
“I know this,” Schottenheimer said when asked if he expected to be retained as Chargers coach, “that right now the only thing I’m interested in is making sure that this group of young men in that locker room and that coaching staff understands that we — while it didn’t go anywhere in these playoffs — had a damn good football season. And at this point, I’ll take some comfort in that — you know, to kind of balance this disappointment of today.”
That’s probably not enough comfort for A.J. Smith and Chargers fans.
