Arizona natives lend me your ears

Post by DallasFanatic »

The wife and I, along with a few couples are heading for spring training. Just wondering if anyone has been to spring training in Arizona or for those who live in AZ. Any good restaurants in the Phoenix area? Good bars? All that mumbo jumbo. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

Been to Spring Training in Arizona three times and it is a blast! I am a Cubs fan and they are in Mesa but if you stay in Scottsdale that is your best bet to get to as many parks as close as possible. The Athletics are in Scottsdale and Giants are in Phoenix close by. Also Tempe is close (Angels) and Mesa (Cubs). Mariners/Padres share a facility out west in Chandler and Royals/Rangers share one in Surprise which is a little hike.

Scottsdale has tons of great resorts, hotels, bars, etc. Anything on Rural/Scottsdale Road. I stayed at Gainey Ranch (http://www.gaineysuiteshotel.com/gainey-ranch.cfm) which is a little pricey but well worth it. Get a car as everything in Phoenix area is FAR apart and traffic is awful. Also, you may want to get tickets in advance as teams sell out prior to Spring Training. CUBS are always sold out but there are scalpers. Best bet is to get seats on the "burm" - outfield grass section with cheap tickets where you can bring a blanket, spread out, check out chicks in bikinis, etc.

Lots of good bars all over and restaurants. On Scottsdale Rd. you have Martini Ranch (Bar), RA (Sushi), Pink Pony (Steakhouse founded by one of the guys who brought baseball to Arizona and like a mini-HALL OF FAME inside), AXIS/RADIUS (nightclub), Fleming's (steaks). If you make it down to Tempe on Mill Avenue you have a ton of bars, restaurants near Arizona State like The Library.

Also check out SIX, The Drift, Suede, Mickey's Hangover (great late night eats and booze), Devil's Martini, Sugar Daddy's, Greasewood Flats, Satisfied Frog (Cave Creek - Green Chili Beer and Jalapeno-stuffed burgers), and Barcelona's. Come to think of it, you may want to leave the wives at home.

Also, it is all laid back at Spring Training. Players will talk to you, end up in the stands next to you. The late Ken Caminiti was playing for the Padres and taking crap from a guy next to me at a a Cubs-Padres game in Chandler/Sun City. About the 4th inning Camaniti took a shower, put on shorts, flip-flops, t-shirt, and came up and sat down RIGHT NEXT to the dude and asked him why he was giving him so much shit! It was classic!

Spend a week and you can also catch a SUNS or COYOTES game after a day baseball game! Fun day of sports and drinking! Also, check out U of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale if you get the chance (right next to where the Coyotes play). It is where the Cardinals play and where the Super Bowl is next year. Get a tour - very impressive!

Here is a good site for all spring training in Florida and Arizona:

Have fun!
