My NFL draft picks

Okay, so late last night I got bored and came up with my picks for the NFL draft. Picked the first 4 rounds....

I'm not gonna bore you with the whole draft, so I will just give you a few random picks and where I had the players from the teams that the majority of the people on here root for.

(Note: I did not take into account possible trades that could affect the draft)

For the Notre Dame fans....

I had Brady Quinn going #7 to Minnesota. I think Detroit goes with Joe Thomas at #2 and the teams #3-6 aren't going to take a QB, and Quinn would be a great start for a rebuilding Vikings team. Ryan Harris to Jacksonville in the 2nd round, Victor Abiamari to Philadelphia in the 2nd round. Rhema McKnight to Washington 3rd round. Darius Walker 3rd round to Oakland (they need depth at RB and he'd be a decent backup). Dan Santucci 4th round to St. Louis.

For the Ohio State fans...

Ted Ginn Jr to Atlanta, Anthony Gonzalez to Baltimore, and Quin Pitcock to Indianapolis all in the 1st round. Troy Smith to Baltimore 2nd round. Doug Dattish to Detroit 3rd round. Antonio Pittman 3rd round to Denver.

For the Michigan fans...

Alan Branch #3 to Cleveland and Leon Hall #16 to Green Bay in the 1st round. LeMarr Woodley to Tampa Bay and David Harris to Seattle 2nd round. Tyler Ecker 4th round to Jacksonville and Steve Breaston 4th round to Seattle.

For Iowa fans...

Marshal Yanda 3rd round to Cleveland. Scott Chandler 3rd round to Green Bay. Mike Jones, 4th round to Washington.

For the Penn State fans...

Paul Pozlusny #13 to St. Louis, and Levi Brown #15 to Pittsburgh in the 1st round. Tony Hunt to Philadelphia 3rd round.

For the Oklahoma fans...

Adrian Peterson #8 to Houston in 1st round. Rufus Alexander 2nd round to Chicago.

For the Texas fans....

Justin Blalock to New York Giants, Michael Griffin to Chicago in 1st round. Aaron Ross to Pittsburgh 2nd round. Tarrell Brown to Cincinnati and Selvin Young to Chicago 3rd round. Kasey Studdard to Minnesota 4th round.

Other notables....

Calvin Johnson #4 (Tampa Bay), Gaines Adams #5 (Arizona), Darelle Revis #11 (San Francisco), Marshawn Lynch #25 (NY Jets), Sidney Rice #22 (Dallas), and Dwayne Jarrett #9 (Miami) in the 1st round.

2nd round notables...

Michael Bush to Cleveland. Buster Davis to Houston. Drew Stanton to Carolina. Dallas Baker to Kansas City.

3rd round notables.....

Chris Leak to Miami. Garrett Wolfe to Pittsburgh. Brandon Jackson to Dallas. Kevin Kolb to Kansas City. John Beck to NY Jets.

4th round notables....

Tyler Palko to Detroit. Jordan Palmer to Houston. Brandon Siler to New Orleans.

Fwiw, I see Derek Landri going in the 3rd or, at latest, 4th round. He's a little smallish for a NFL DT, but even so, I'm more confident about that than I am about any of the guys you mentioned after the 2nd round. I still think the Lions take Quinn at #2.

Brian Robison is one of the top 100 NFL prospects as a DE, he should end up being taken in either the 3rd or 4th round. Athletically he is such a freak of nature he will likely go in the 3rd.

Yes, Jamarcus Russell will go #1. I think that's pretty much set unless something unforseen happens between now and the draft.

Yeah, Robison could go in the 3rd or 4th round. Definitely could see that. Tim Crowder probably goes in the 5th round I would guess.

Crowder is a solid 2nd round pick, here is how the Texas draft will likely go

OG Blalock late 1st early 2nd

FS Mike Griff 1st round

CB Aaron Ross 1st or 2nd he is all over the place a lot will depend on his combine numbers

DE Tim Crowder solid 2nd could move into the 1st with a solid combine, could also fall into the 3rd with a bad combine.

CB Tarell Brown - 3rd round maybe 4th, he is a legit 4.4 40 guy but he might move up if he runs legit 4.3 that he ran early in his career.

DE Brian Robison - 3rd round maybe 4th like I said he will likely impress a lot of people with his freakish athletic ability. He has a 42 inch verticle and set the NCAA record for blocked kicks. He is also a world call discuss thrower and a strong candidate for the summer olympics

OG Kasey Studdard - 2nd day guy but should stick on roster, if not he has a future in wrestling

OC Lyle Sendlin - another 2nd day guy who will probably stick as much for his ability to deep snap as his ability to play center in the NFL.

RB Selvin Young - 2nd day guy I highly doubt he sticks for more than a year, he has all the ability to be a situational back but injuries have always been a problem.

I doubt anyone else gets drafted

If Brady Quinn falls to #7, I will make you Mod of this forum. No fucking way that will happen.

Ryan Harris is falling quicker than a rock in water. 3rd round if he's lucky.

Abiamari might sneak up into the 1st round. He will test very well at the combine.

McKnight will fall because of his size, lack of seperation ability and inconsistant hands.

Walker will not be a first day pick.

Ditto Santucci.

Killian,

I do not expect Quinn to fall that far because I'm expecting someone to trade up to get him. If no one wants to trade up, I do think that's where he'll end up. Detroit has too many holes to fill and a QB is not their biggest hole. They need O-line help, and Joe Thomas would be the best pickup. Take a look at the teams #3-#6......none of those would take a QB. So if the Lions don't take him and no one trades up, Minnesota at #7 is where he'll go. Sometimes a QB drops farther than people expect (see Aaron Rogers). And this years O-line class is not good, so guys that normally would be lower may go higher because of the lack of depth. I was looking at the prospects and it's not an impressive list, so guys like Santucci and Harris might go higher than you expect.

Harris doesn't have a position in the NFL. He's not an LT, he's a stretch at RT and he's never played guard. Santucci was a turnstile.

I have a sneaking suspecion that Cleveland would take Quinn. Call it a hunch.

I get what you're saying here, but IIRC he was also considered something of a project when he came to ND. He worked hard and took advantage of some fortuitous (for him) depth issues on the O-Line and earned a starting spot as a freshman. If he displays a similar work ethic, I think he can stick in the NFL.

The guy I worry about not having a position is Landri. He's too light for a NFL DT, too short for a DE, and not quick enough for LB.
Santucci was a turnstile.
Agreed. He's in the list I have as undrafted, along with Frome, Morton, Richardson and Ndukwe. If I'm wrong about any of them, Santucci and Frome are the most likely to be drafted.

I still think Quinn winds up in Detroit when all is said and done. If he falls far enough, I think Tampa Bay takes him. I don't think Gruden is convinced that either Gradkowski or Simms is the answer at QB.

Posted: Wed Jan 31, 2007 6:15 pm
by TheJON
Tampa can't take a QB. How can you justify resigning Simms and then draft a QB? What Gruden will do is give Simms some help by drafting Calvin Johnson. This is a very important draft for Tampa Bay. If they mess this up, it could set them back quite some time. Even if Gruden doesn't think Simms is the long term answer, I still think he'll want to take Johnson because they have got to get a playmaker on offense. Johnson could step right in and make plays. A little different for a QB. Rarely does a QB step right in and take over.

I also cannot see Cleveland taking a QB in the 1st round. If they don't think Charlie Frye is their future QB, I think they'll still take a defensive player in the 1st round and then go with a QB later in the draft. Maybe Drew Stanton in the 2nd round or Chris Leak in the 3rd. But it's too early to give up on Frye (and Derek Anderson is a nice backup too) and they have some glaring weaknesses on defense and with Rome Crenell being a defensive guy, I expect him to go that way.

Or the fact that Crenell is a very good friend of Weis, Quinn would be a very logical choice.

I hear you. I have him ranked 24th.

A number of mock drafts I've seen have him going either 15th to the Steelers, or 16th to the Packers. Great. Green Bay could have a pair of Kal busts in the backfield.

Call it a hunch, but I think Lynch winds up with the Bills at the #12 pick. They'll probably be looking to move McGahee after the interview he did slamming the City of Buffalo.

perhaps if Green Bay does take Lynch they can trade for Kyle Boeller as well...then they can have two Cal QB busts...

I don't think the Bills trade McGahee because his value won't be that high mostly because he's a jerkoff. I think they'll try to trade him and then find out they won't get what they wanted for, and then keep him and try and change his ways.

Killian,

I don't think Weis connection to Crenell will have anything to do with who they select. If they feel they aren't confident in Charlie Frye, then they'll go down that road. If not, they'll go defense (but I think Adrian Peterson is also a possibility). But it's not going to have anything to do with Charlie Weis. Crenell needs to win, and he needs to win now. He isn't going to do any favors for his buddy when his job is on the line. Remember, the Titans passed on Matt Leinart last year with Norm Chow as their OC and Jeff Fisher as the HC. If I were Cleveland, I'd trade down with a team like Minnesota. There's a lot of guys that will be available at #3 that the Vikings could take (Quinn, Calvin Johnson, Adrian Peterson) that would really help their horrible offense. I bet the Vikings would give up their 2nd and 1st round pick in exchange for the Browns 1st and 4th round picks. Would be a good trade for both. Cleveland needs players and Minnesota needs offense (well, the need secondary help too but they can use free agency for that). Minnesota could then take Calvin Johnson and Cleveland could take Alan Branch if he's still on the board or go offense with Adrian Peterson. Then, the Browns would have 2 early 2nd round picks to take defense. Would be a perfect trade for both parties.

Of course it won't.

Excellent points Goober. NFL teams only select players that played college ball for teams coached by their buddies. Yeah, I'm sure Romeo Crenell has such great job security that he's going to draft a player because he played for his former peer in college. Afterall, he did win 4 games last year. And 6 the year before that. Yep, his job should be perfectly safe after that performance!

And Ferguson was a late 2nd round selection not the 3rd pick of the draft!

I'd wager that Romeo Crennel has about a 10% say in whoever the Browns draft.

That could be very possible. Right now, I'm sure he's not on the best of terms with ownership considering his team blows (even though it's not his fault, it's the organizations fault for giving him such a piss poor roster).

Posted: Fri Feb 02, 2007 4:49 pm

Crenel has the chance to take a franchise QB with the 3rd pick. If you step into his shoes, there is much less associated with this pick because Quinn was developed by one of his good friends. I highly doubt he believes Charlie Frey is his QB of the future. Add to this you have the "local boy on the local team" and there is a very good chance Cleveland uses the 3rd pick to take Quinn.

If I were Cleveland, I would trade down. Get an extra 2nd round pick and then draft a guy like Chris Leak or Troy Smith in the 3rd round and try and develop them. What would be the point of drafting Quinn when he has no help? The defense can't stop anyone, and if Braylon Edwards doesn't stay healthy he'll have no weapons on offense to get the ball to. Besides, 2 years ago they were so excited about Charlie Frye (although I'm not sure why). So, I don't know how they can give up on him so fast. They had to figure that he was going to be a project and projects do not take 2 years to develop. I also do not think Cleveland is a good fit for him. He'll be forced to start right away and have no players around him. Will hurt his development. A place like Minnesota would be an absolute perfect fit. He wouldn't have to jump in right away, and by the time he's ready they should have some weapons around him. The guy I feel worst for is Jamarcus Russell. I really think he has unreal potential, but that is a BAD situation in Oakland and they are a franchise going nowhere until Al Davis dies. Just wait until he has to deal with a certain star WR that quits on routes because he doesn't feel like playing hard. Or playing behind a swiss cheese O-line. On top of that, he'll be playing for a 31 year old coach that probably will never win more than 7 games in his NFL career.

In fairness to JON, Yahoo's mock draft has Quinn falling all the way to the Dolphins at #9. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=j ... &type=lgns So he's not the only one.

Then again, Yahoo also has Peterson falling to the Packers at #15, and the Texans passing up Peterson for Lynch. So I'm not sure how reliable this one is.

Posted: Fri Feb 09, 2007 8:35 pm
by TheJON
If the Texans are going to draft a running back, no way do they take Lynch at #8 over Peterson. I suppose I could see Peterson dropping a little in the draft because of his past injury problems but if a team takes Marshawn Lynch while Adrian Peterson is still on the board, they will be fucking stupid. If the Texans are worried about Peterson's health but still want to take a RB in the 1st round, at least trade down and then take Lynch later in the 1st round. Lynch would be a solid value pick late in the 1st round, but early in the round he wouldn't be.
