can't be topped. nothing sends shivers like the countdown. maybe because it references the awesomeness to come. better than the final countdown.

The first song that popped in my head when I read this thread title was:

For sheer dramatic buildup, nothing tops Mr. Crowley. Period.

I always liked the beginning of the extended version of "Raspberry Beret" where the thumb cymbals come in, Lisa does an excellent guitar solo and then Prince unexpectedly coughs to begin the vocals.

Also, "The Rain Song" and "Gimme Shelter."

I saw Mister Mister, in 1985, maybe? I think they opened for Heart, which was right around the time Heart was in the early shark-jumping stages.


Another favorite, probably also for sentimental reasons -- way back when, I was at an outdoor Metallica show, and me and my bud started our mission early, which was to weasel and knife our way to the very front. We came pretty close to making it, but as anyone who's seen Metallica outdoors knows, there gets to be some serious competition for the premium spots, to the point people are willing to throw down pretty hard over them. So anyhoo, we made it, oh...right about where the Snakepit was to form. And right about then, the pure-adrenalin intro of Breadfan started...


Wow, what a surge. About 30,000 people all running forward as fast and hard as they could, with me at the front of it. Damn, but I took a massive beating. By far the worst carnage I've seen at a show(it was over 100 degrees outside). Saw a dude get his leg snapped clean in half....and he propped himself up against his buddies' shoulders, and kept moshing. In the pit, some big motherfucker was punching everyone...until he punched a chick on the periphery, who wasn't even in the pit...and what a saw next was awesome...two Skinheads, the smaller of the two was probably 6'7" and freaking ripped, just fucking beat the holy hell out of the dude...just jackhammered the guy's face to a pulp...but he pretty much deserved it, so it was cool.
