The east shore of Lake Ontario has been getting hammered with Lake Effect snow for the past week. To the point where even the local media is starting to make a big deal. And trust me, up there, people don't make a big deal about snowfall until they get more than 2 feet.

This last week they have gotten over 5 feet worth of snow. Here's one pic.



Either that's TVO shoveling that roof or that house just got fucking pummeled.

Btw -- not nearly as much snow where I am. But Oswego is only about 100-150 miles away. Still is damn cold here, though -- it made it into the 20's today, which was the high water mark for the entire week.

See, but I come from a region marked by people who are smart enough to not live where there's 5 freaking feet of snowfall in a week. We just built a highway that makes it a short drive to there, so we don't actually have to deal with it unless we want to.

Yeah, I think I did. Far enough away that it doesn't directly affect me. Close enough that I can feel their pain.

Truth be told, much as I complain about winter, it's been an awful long time since I've seen five feet of snow in a single week. I do remember a blizzard when I was in 8th grade that closed school for a week. Snow was piled up so high that you couldn't open the front door. I remember my brothers and I for fun climbing out the bedroom window onto the roof and jumping off the roof into the snow drifts.

Well, no.. the fact that the eastern edge of Lake Ontario hasn't frozen over yet only MAKES IT POSSIBLE for you to get the amount of snow you're currently witnessing. Really, if it's just that it hasn't frozen over yet, why don't you get 5 ft. snowfalls every week?

The specific direction of the winds, combined with the vast difference between the arctic air mass' temp and the lake's relatively much warmer temp (thanks to the warm Dec-Jan) is the casue for your 5 ft. of shit. None of this explains why anyone would be so frekain' stupid to live in that shit though.

The cold wind coming across the entire length of the lake, together with the relatively warm temperature of the lake water, resulted in all this snow.

My point was basically in response to Y2K mentioning global warming, presumably in a dismissive manner. Originally, I was pointing out only that global warming has actually contributed to the lake effect we're talking about here. You don't dispute that, do you?

OK, I wake up this morning and it appears that my former east shore stomping grounds is in heavy rotation on the cable news networks. You can pretty much tell who the lowest people on the cable news food chain are. They are the duchebags who got their asses shipped out to places like Scriba, Pulaski and Mexico to report on the now 8-10 FEET of snow????

Give it a few days before someone's house/trailer finally caves in. If it hasn't happened already.

They even had photos from Redfield--- my old trout fishing area up on the Tug Hill Plateau. Up around Osceola I've seen snow drifts last off the Salmon River till June !

Just how local is that snow? Does it make it to the adirondacks or does it drop it's entire load on coastal shitholes?

Pretty much the 3 counties surrounding the east end of Lake Ontario, some residual stuff makes it to the western slopes of the Berkshires. It's Global Climate Change....

I live about a half-hour south of Rochester, and I'll tell you that we NEVER see snowfall like that.

My attitude is that is you choose to live in a spot that gets hit like that with any regularity, then you have no right to bitch. You chose to live there. If, OTOH, you don't mind the occasional 8-foot snowfall, then fine.

Personally, I can't picture living in a place that doesn't have four actual seasons. My wife and I had the opportunity to move to southern Va. (near Williamsburg) several years back, but we decided that in addition to wanting to still stay near our families, we were born-and-bred NYers and LIKED having snow for a third of a year. I'll take the occasional snowstorm over mudslides, earthquakes, regular triple-digit heatwaves, droughts, wildfires, etc.

It's all a matter of personal preference. Hell, when I retire, I may decide to move to a more southern/western area...then again, with global warming, maybe the heat will come to us by then and we can stay put....

The Lake Effect bands go as far east as Speculator (about 90 miles inland). Which is inside the Adirondack Park. But if your destination is up in the High Peaks area (STFU Dinsdale it's a relative term), you won't see anything near that level of snow. Their snowfall accumulates throughout the season due to the extreme cold temps. Simply put, its so fucking cold that they don't get thaws the way the lake effect areas get them.

I have been in that area when you had a tough time following the trail since most of the blazes were buried. No, socals, blazes aren't like your brush fires, they are markers for trails usually located about 8 ft high on trees. I am sure in the U&L they put them 80 feet up, right dins?

Never really measured them, but I think the ones on the road reflector posts on the road up to Timberline stick up somewhere around 15-20 feet, or something likle that.

I lived in Rochester for 7 years, Madison for 4 and northern Wisconsin for 12. Now I live in Southern California and can't think of a single day I miss the snow.
