Ironically it is modernism and modernists that have for nearly a century suppressed traditional realists from the freedom to express themselves artistically. It is Realism which has been virtually banned in most of the fine art departments in colleges and universities throughout the western world.
It was an act of desperation by Manhattan socialites, who were afraid the US would be remembered as an empire of hard-working but artistically void drones.
Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol are perfect examples of manufactured 'artists' and the cheques are STILL rolling in...no wonder America has the largest GNP of any country in the world.
